I think that goes without saying.

And yet the filmmakers forgot to reference the one thing they should have taken from GITS.

With all the future tech that GITS has, it was still pretty grounded.
This looks like every anime adaptation gone wrong.
Which is a shame, because the costume dept. from the teasers, looked like they were on the right track.

Looks a bit weird, like Scott Pilgrim in a few scenes where the background looked a little to vibrant to match the comic (which fit the style)... except here it doesn't fit the serious tone.

Plus that was two too many cuts of that flip.

Will still see it, regardless.

I'm impressed how faithful it is.
CG was awkward, but I'm surprised it seems to be following the movie pretty well.

Well there are several problems with the whole discussion.

The major in the manga or anime was not ashamed of being naked, because she was not. Her body is more like a tool, she is not a human, so her body is nothing more than a hammer or a car or something like that to her as is it for other cyborgs. She can switch it or get a new model and she even does. (she once find her child model in a store in Stand alone Complex). In Stand alone Complex they tried to explain that a little, because in the movie that was not possible. She feels not attachment to it, that why she does not eat as some other cyborgs do. So why should she care.

And that is the main part of the anime, the human in an artificial body meets the AI in a body and they find how similar they have become. They are both more like puppets and one tries to sever the strings the other tries to become a puppet master himself.

This continues to look pretty bad.

Also, this whole series of mini-trailers is an awful marketing move. I understand the idea must be to keep 'discussion' of the movie peaking ever time they release another 'teaser', but that's wrongheaded thinking.

She was naked in a much worse film than this will be, so it couldn't have hurt. Pg-13 was a mistake for other reasons too, though you get away with a lot of violence these days.

If you are talking about Under the Skin, that's a bold ass claim. Not to mention that movie had a lot more artistic merit than a movie with the goal of being an action blockbuster.

Yeah that didn't impress me at all, I mean I'm sure it'll turn out alright but nothing I've seen/heard so far has got me excited for it.

Also lol2 at anyone complaining about her not being naked.

Having seen the anime movie not too long ago, this feels so much blander in comparison.

Props for making the stealth suit less fanservice-y, at least.

So, first impression is that they've dropped the sci-fi aspect of her optical camo, where she needs a special hood and goggles to actually see while she's invisible.

And that's disappointing.

Also I don't fucking care if she's in skin tight flesh colored latex or a trenchcoat in this adaptation. Shirow only prefers the former for the Major because he's a fucking pervert.

You can't do the original movie justice. Most people who watched it find it boring. This wouldn't work as a Hollywood production.

There's good socially relevant topics like AI and identity (even gender identity) in the story, but you can't make that into a Hollywood production and make your cash back. When doing 2d animation anything is possible, production costs are not relevant to what kind of environment the story is set in, so you can do sci-fi or something modern or historical, it doesn't matter. Here it was inevitably going to be all about cost control, which gets in the way of properly telling a story that was simply set against an elaborate sci-fi backdrop but which was very narrow in its focus. You can't go and make a sci-fi movie at great expense to have nearly no action in it, unless you go cheap on the CG, and then it will just pull the audience out which you can't afford to do in a sci-fi.

I'm sure a great writer and director could take the essence of the original GitS movie's topic, but Hollywood would never go for it. Movies like that happen by accident, and Hollywood is doing adaptations and remakes to avoid those accidents.

I think it looks fine. This isn't one of the better clips they've released, but I can't really judge an entire scene based off 5 seconds of footage. I'm hoping it'll end up being a solid film, even if it doesn't match the anime's heights.

I think GITS movie makers are doing it wrong with all these mini trailers, they should just release one full trailer and that's it. Releasing seconds of new materials make people nitpick about tiniest details - this is true for any media consumption. Most GITS fans by now would have made up their mind whether they want to watch this movie or not, they should aim the trailers for casual audience instead.

And I don't think they should restrict themselves in their art direction to be as close as possible with the original material, the best adaptations are usually wildly different from its sources. I'm glad they don't make her chase people nude in this movie, though I love the original anime, I was much younger at that time and rewatching the scenes where she had to be almost-nude, while no dudes (cyborg or human) somehow escape this problem, yeah, it stinks of objectification. I argue even if they make new GITS anime, they should move on from the old tired tropes.

As for quality, I don't know if this will be good or bad. But hey, they have me at Ghost in the Shell. I'll watch anything.
