In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a polished looking rockstar game.

Come to think of it, I've never seen a game of theirs have a consistent framerate.:lol

Table Tennis... Hello!?

kikizo:

Once again, our demo takes place on the Xbox 360 version of the game - in fact, nobody has seen anything of the PS3 version to date, outside of Rockstar and Take 2. We actually expected to see the PS3 version this time. "It's still a week or two behind," Rockstar told us, saying that we'll "absolutely" get to see it soon, but that for demo purposes this version was easier to show.

Assuming 2 - 3 weeks before going gold, they only have 2 months and a few days or so... or maybe 70 days. For such a complex game with a multiplatform release, it's gonna be tight.

Yea, I'm thinking they are not going to make it.

if true. Rockstar is really struggling to combine a bigger world and better graphics. I mean atleast the characters should look better than the damn boat

Be nice if we get the PS3 version sometime before launch.

because there are more possible reasons for them showing the 360 version. at the time of GTAIV's release, 360 will have a larger userbase -- they want to instil confidence in that large userbase. i'm not saying it's a definite -- i'm saying it's a possibility.

having a hdd to stream data and having blu-ray to have more flexibility with where data is located are two things that can address issues like pop-in directly. it's not trolling.

If they can't get 360-version to run well. PS3.. oh boy.

Just to perspectivize things, the fine folks at Kikizo:

And even though this build is five weeks old, we can reveal that frame rate is much improved - certainly more stable since the last build we looked at - so anyone worried about the version shown off at Take 2's conference at E3 two weeks ago can relax. We're almost certain that was precisely the same code that we saw for our first preview, which was already quite old at the time we saw it back in May. When they warn that they are showing unoptimised code, strangely enough, they mean it. Now, the game is graphically a lot more stable, which is why they didn't hesitate to put the game engine through its paces this time with some very fast driving and shooting action around the city, that rarely struggled to keep up, unlike the more, shall we say, 'fragile' old build people have seen.

So, we have absolutely no concern about the technical quality that the final game will offer based on this latest viewing. The only issue at this time, is that as we slowly pan the camera around when there's a very broad view of many buildings, the many windows in sight are a bit jittery as they reflect the world - though this is not the case during typical in-game scenarios, where building detail is usually closer as you pass it by. Of course, the game is still a work in progress - visuals, voice acting, AI and so forth still have a few months' of thorough optimisation and finalisation time

you are correct sir :D

With that said i actually dont have a problem with the screens i personally wasnt expecting a graphical powerhouse out of GTA4 for various reasons. The GTA series has never been known for being some graphical showcase its all about the gameplay which im sure will be good.

i lol at the people who are judging the game's graphics based on a couple of pics. i mean, if you saw the thing in motion in hd then you'd see that it looks pretty damn good.

Once again, everyone at GAF seems to be nitpicking about the graphics. Surprise surprise. I think that the one thing that this game seems to be offering that the other GTAs haven't, and I really think this should be the main focus of what to look forward to, is the experience. It seems like the actual gameplay has been greatly refined. I'm sure I'm not the only one here, but I never really had the greatest of times with the GTA franchise, aside from stealing a car and trying to see how many people I could run down. The very fact that the game seems more VISCERAL and seems less like a cartoon makes me want this game even more. Remember kiddies, engine optimization is one of the last steps in the development process, so if they say they're going to iron it out, it's probably going to get ironed out.

However, that being said, Rockstar needs to make sure that they actually deliver on their promises to get the thing ironed out. I will NOT play a game that's stuttering along at less than 30 fps. I just won't. I'm already having a hell of a time playing Harry Potter on Wii because of that, but it happens so rarely that I can deal with it. Note to Rockstar- if you need to delay this a bit to iron out the kinks, PLEASE JUST DO IT. We know the game will be better in the end if this is the case. Get this thing fixed.

P.S. And for the love of Christ, take care of those texturing problems we see in some of those screenshots. The game looks great, but one would think we were looking at a PS1 game at times, at least when you're looking at a background.

I tell you what, if GTA4 runs pretty much the same on both 360 and PS3, with regards to load times and pop-in etc, will you stfu about the advantages of a hdd and blu-ray?

If the PS3 version runs better, then carry on trolling ma brother :lol

If it runs the same, he'll blame R*. If it runs better, he'll praise Sony. See how it works?

I will donate lollipops and/or Cheddar Cheese Combos in support of this arrangement.

He can say anything he wants as long as he loses that horrible avatar. Seriously it's the only reason why I have dfyb on ignore.

I came in here looking for 45 minutes of gameplay footage...:(

Anyway, game looks and sounds great. Might have to get a PS3 for this.

saying the hdd and blu-ray have advantages for games is not trolling :lol

it's fact.

and what's more, is that the problems IGN described are specific things that can benefit from these features. whether or not rockstar takes the time and effort to utilize these features (along with cell) well, however, is something i can't predict or make bets about.

I don't mind the textures as much as the framerate. it has to be stable!

I don't know how much I trust Rock* to smooth out the framerate issues by the game's release. GTAIII, GTAVC, GTASA, Bully....all had horrendous framerates.

Heck, San Andreas, on my PC, with an E6600 and a 7950GT can't even run at 60fps (almost) at 1280*1024. On the PS2 and XBOX, it barely made 30fps most of the time.

If you absolutely require 60fps then I don't think this game will be for you. There are always trade-offs . . . and if you expect a massive detailed world filled with NPCs then expect the frame-rate to take a hit.

Holy Crap this preview is GOLD.

A cab can be hailed at any time as Niko whistles to get its attention - (one time when we hailed one, a passer by was hit by the cab - the animation, as always, was superb)

ETA: Still the Kikizo one, the gold standard of GTAIV previews at this point.

That doesn't make any sense. Surely they'd want to show GTA4 in the best possible light?

The gameplay and scope sound f'ing amazing and I'm confident this will be a strong candidate for my GOTY. Truly a next-gen GTA, and nothing sounds better to me.

That said, it might not be a bad idea to dial down my expectations of the graphics - sure the trailers were amazingly detailed but GTA certainly has historically been plagued by slowdown. I'm sure it'll look and run better than the preview build did, but I'm going to try to keep my inner graphics-whore on a leash. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised!

I've lost track of the number of big-ticket games to have issues a few months before launch only to get polished up in time for release. (Halo, Gears, etc.) Given how this build is much better than the last (and still old), there's no reason to sweat it at this point.

I just finished reading the Gamespot preview, and it sounds just wonderful. I've never played any of the GTA games for more than a few minutes, so I'm not exactly a fan. But the mission structures, chase/evade systems and overall immersion sounded amazing.

not if it means the 360 userbase loses confidence in their version and rockstar potentially loses out on lots of interest and sales. just look at this forum -- most people expect the 360 version to be the superior version, and that's largely due to them only showing it for 360. 360 userbase is larger -- they are catering to them.

And it just keeps coming (AND THERE'S SEVEN PAGES TO GO!!)

Inside the cab from Niko's perspective you can see and talk through to the driver in the front. The camera view of the cab as it goes through the city changes every five seconds to make things more interesting to look at; we see a three-quarters driver's window view from the front that shows the cabbie (who looks just as detailed as Niko), as well as views from the hood, the top of the rear wheel, underneath the window, and even a racing game-style replay cam panning around from up high, showing off some exceptional roof and top-of-subway rail detail that many developers simply wouldn't bother with - nothing is hidden here, and the world is constantly moving and dynamic. Undoubtedly, the RAGE engine is starting to show what it can really do here, and it makes you wonder whether Take 2 might license out this technology in the vein of Valve's Source engine or Epic's Unreal engine - it's that sort of benchmark quality we're talking about for the new consoles.

Yyyyyyikes!!

Hell, i dont care if those recent screens looked better or worse, if there's one thing i have learned from playing GTA's, is that visuals dont matter with these.

Its about having fun.

Wow that sounded clichéd ..

As long as you're being ridiculous maybe you should wear a rubber nose and floppy shoes.

Okay, last one (YOU SHOULD ALL BE READING THIS YOURSELVES BY NOW):

Like in all windowed building in the game, the outside world and its traffic can be seen and heard from inside the café - (here we see the underneath of a raised subway rail), and the traffic hum sounds like real traffic. We touched on this in our last preview but seriously - wow. It starts and stops so when the traffic is stationary, there's heavy noise like large trucks rumbling against a backdrop of extremely varied car horns and perhaps smaller parking traffic. You don't even need to see outside to know it's a living world, though you can do that too of course, thanks to seamless connection between interior and exterior environments all modelled in one consistent game world that never loads, never takes a technical short cut, and never feels cheap. It doesn't sound like a game, it doesn't even sound like a movie; it sounds like New York. And the detail on every vehicle is amazing; the grille at the front of a big truck we saw is shiny and reflective, and every mirror on every vehicle appears to reflect the world - useful, when often-paranoid Niko is always looking over his shoulder in the rear view.

Just. Simply. Wow.

the only thing that is stopping gtaiv from becoming awesome: the ultimatest awesomnest, is the soundtrack, which we haven't heard yet besides some placeholders.

Is this as big a deal anymore? I'll probably be using custom soundtracks anyway.

If you guys had started reading the Kikizo preview earlier you'd have found a load of soundtrack info but Rockstar asked for it to be removed. That'll learn youz.

Are you responsible for this thing? Well done, man. It's like sitting in the demo chair.

Bully was really good in the graphics department for a PS2 game. The framerate got a little crazy sometimes, but was, for the most part, stable.
