Today is not the release of the alpha 3.4 for Star Citizen, but the announcement by Chris Roberts of the arrival of two new members to the board of Cloud Imperium:
Eli Klein, an old friend of Chris, and Dan Offner who represents a new investor: Clive and Keith Calder. The latter dropped $ 46 million to get 10% of Cloud Imperium., The parent company and the developer of Star Citizen and Squadron 42.
Chris Roberts still controls 75% of the studio and explains that these private funds will be used for the marketing of both because Chris does not want to use a publisher or the money of the backers.
Cloud Imperium has also published its accounting for the last 5 years and, well, the studio is losing money. Cloud Imperium now has 520 people and spend nearly $ 50 million a year.
Last year, CIG realized a net loss of $ 5 million and by the end of 2017 the studio still had $ 14 million in cash. it seems like the studio need more than $ 4 million a month to work. Donations pay an average of $ 2.5 million per month except for the "happy" months of the CitizenCon and the anniversary of the game. The situation is far from hopeless but shows that the studio can not survive only with the donations of the players.
Chris Roberts also took the opportunity to announce that the beta of Squadron 42 (the solo campaign) should come out in mid-2020. So we can expect a release in late 2020.
