New Hitman: Absolution Walkthrough - 'Streets of Hope'

Most games nowadays are far too easy for an experienced gamer on normal.

I play certain games like Gears and Halo on the harder difficulties. Everything else seems to provide a sufficient challenge on normal my first time through.

Maybe I'm not hardcore enough, I don't know. *shrug*

Looks decent. Hopefully you can turn off that shitty point counter in the upper left and the pictures of your target(s) in the upper right.

They mentioned how big it was, several times, so hopefully it'll be quite big -- but if the entire level is merely what they played, which seems to be the case since it housed all the main targets, it is not big at all.

Well, it looks like Hitman and I like the sound of purist mode. The only issues I have is that the game appears to be built around using Instinct, can't shake that feeling. I need to see a purist mode playthrough to put those concerns to rest, but apart from that...

Consider me slightly more hyped.

I don't get the vibe that it's built around it at all. In Blood Money on the easier difficulties, you can open up your map and it marks every NPC, guard and target in real time for you. Instinct is basically a streamlined version of that for finding where people are and what they're doing (and with a limit on how much you can use it). I'll be playing it on the PC so I have no interest in using it to let the game shoot for me (I can do it well enough with a mouse). What I see in that video is myself playing it without using the wallhack or mark and execute, and sussing out the nuances of each area that allow me to get in and kill targets without being seen. It will take that trial and error gameplay people talk about from previous Hitman games, but I like that.

Yeah, visibly armed - no shit sherlock.

I kind of like that feature. There were times in Blood Money where you would question whether an NPC would see a weapon like the detonator or the fiber wire and go apeshit. Even in the very gif above my post, it's unclear whether picking up that screwdriver will be cause for the cop to start shooting (pretty sure a cop would panic IRL if he saw you approach him and pick up a screwdriver). For new players, that's one of the annoying barriers to entry. There were also contextual times when you could hold a weapon while disguised, like the shotgun toting guards at the wedding mission in Louisiana, and no one would care. Making it clear on an easy difficulty setting when you are and are not safe within the game's sometimes unclear logic is an OK thing in my book.

But it shouldn't be there on the hard difficulties.

Graphics look stunning. Hmm should I preorder, it's only a few weeks after AC3... decisions, decisions...

In my book, the AC games never even came close to scratching my stealth itch. After Revelations, I'll be playing AC3 more as a personal obligation to the series than as a game I really want to play. I'm looking forward to Absolution more than any other game coming out this year just because I haven't had a good shot of stealth Hitman action in a long time.

For the screwdriver I kinda agree. Actually I wouldn't have taken it at all, if I would have played the game. For the pistol, not so much. I mean you would have to be pretty dense to not understand that drawing a pistol "could" blow your cover. In my head I heard "Megaman, Megaman, drawing your pistol may draw attention!!!!!11111".

Perhaps they should tell that in the tutorial once, if they really need to. And I guess for newbie players, a little icon at the lower right corner should be enough (they already display the exclamation mark icon there, which I think is totally sufficient). Or at least they should make the text smaller. The large text is really distracting. But anyway just a minor nit-pick. I really love what they did. One of the rare franchises that didn't get butchered in the transition to HD.

But it shouldn't be there on the hard difficulties.

That's for sure.

was going to pass this one by but after seeing that video this might be a birthday present to myself. I like that they put stuff in there for the core gamer. I was worried this would be a setpiece game but it seems like there is a point system in place to balance things out. Also getting bit of a FO3 vibe which daddy likes.

My god, they've done it. I was convinced by their Chinatown walkthrough, but with all the disguises, open levels, and traps here I'm sold!

The mark and execute stuff will never be needed, just look on the score screen:

"Non-target penalty", just like always. Hitman at the highest level doesn't allow you to kill anyone but the target itself to get Silent Assassin, and it obviously wouldn't force you to take a penalty in any game tracking it in the score. You probably can still do it via accident like Blood Money without penalty, but that doesn't involve shooting 6 people at once.

The graphics look awful because of the lighting, why is it so bright? Inside it looks better, but outside, eurgh. It seems to get better at certain points in the video, but then it suddenly goes all yellow again.

On the subject, I find the concept of score to be sort of disappointing. The money system in Blood Money worked well I thought. I think it was poorly balanced because it never really forced the player into making critical decisions on upgrades with money because you were always swimming in it and never needed to upgrade stuff other than this pistol and utility gear. But I still liked it. Having it just be this nebulous "score" instead of contextualizing it as money seems like a step backwards.

But then, we haven't really seen all the backend mechanics of the game. It does say he can earn some technique on that screenshot, so maybe there are some progression mechanics in the game still.

I saw this earlier. Instinct aside, it looks extremely good. My faith in this game being good was also restored by the Hong Kong level. It reminds me of Blood Money's suburban level mixed with the Mardi Gras level.

Since every aspect can be turned off and using Instinct is optional, I'll definitely be playing this game like the old Hit Man games. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more from this game.

From the sniper challenge it seems like that progression is still there, just managed differently. They also have all of the hidden stuff to do in each level that unlock multipliers, which in the demo were things like all headshots, killing the ninja, blowing up mines, etc. which should be pretty fun to find in every level.

I did think the money system worked fine, but I guess in the context of the game 47 is doing this stuff for information instead of just as paid work.

They're continuing to justify my preorder. Done a complete 180 on this after being very worried about it a few months ago. Looking forward to it.

There is just so much they've yet to show as well, I've heard hotel and desert levels mentioned. Man if it's as good as the originals then will be my personal GOTY.

You raise some very good points and I fully agree with all of them. My only worry is that it might become a much more trial and error than BM ever was. It may and probably is a misplaced fear, but I really need to see a purist playthrough of this level just to see how it all works with no visual indicators and no instinct.

It's a huge improvement over getting shot on sight when doing something wrong.

Fair point. I found it a little jarring, normally a cop would let off a few rounds if ever got that close in but I'm paying too much attention to what the AI does on easy/normal.

I fully expect the AI will be a lot more 'on the button' and have more awareness on the higher difficulties.

I feel like they are marketing this game to appeal the average mass market dudebro but in actuality the game will be roughly similar to what we are used to.

Yeah I dont give a shit about my "score". I'd rather get money to upgrade Hitman and his stuff.
Oh gosh yes. In Blood Money you could make those Ballers baller. Hope it still has that customization aspect. Those points have to be used for something.

Oh... "Instinctive Shot Level 3 rewards at 150,000".
Well that's boring if they're going with a preset unlock path.

That looks fantastic. They are clearly spending a lot of time trying to create interesting NPC AI reactions. There is a bit of realism present but it is still very much geared towards fun.

It seems like a much higher fidelity take on Hitman (not just in terms of visuals either).

This was ridiculous.

At least we'll always have Blood Money.

How so? He kills 7 guys at once and it takes zero fucking challenge. Seems abusive enough to me.

yeah but it looks like you have to build a certain amount of points in order to make it work.

Agreed. I can't believe people were hating on the game initially. But that Batman x ray vision looks stupid, I will try to play without it. But otherwise this is shaping to be the best Hitman game yet.
