New(ish) Sim City is currently $20 on Amazon (US) - worth it?

First post nails it. It's just not a very good simulation game and it will greatly disappoint anyone looking for a game like that. It's an okay city design game if that's what you care about. It's quite pretty and has great music.

The only (pleasant) surprise about this game was that pretty much everyone on the internet, both media and consumers, called it out for being the piece of shit that it is.

Do not reward malice.

Theyre geniuses. They created an engine for the game and couldnt actually make a proper game with it!

Next up, Unreal engine 4, but it can never render a gun.

Hey, they made Unreal Engine 3 and it couldn't handle shooting in multiplayer.

Well, before just listening to all these no's it really depends. Simcity is much more of a town simulator than a city simulator. If you've got a lot of friends on Origin who own it then I'd say yes (even just one friend would be good). If you've got none and none who are interested in it I'd pass because honestly the game is almost impossible to progress in single player and playing with strangers is no fun.

SimCity4 Deluxe Edition (even physical discs if you feel like it) and there a substantive mod community that's somewhat on the same page with one another so that mix-and-matching mods can result in a totally different game experience. I think I've bought SC4 4 times over a decade as I've lost discs or wanted a fresh start, etc. Always worth it.

For some awesome oldschool fun I'd suggest grabbing SC2000 off of GoG for cheap. Perfect balance of depth and simplicity and quite an achievement when it was new. Most modern-day F2P and $1.99 app games still can't even come close to being anywhere near as good as that nearly 20-year-old DOS game. Well, I'm pretty sure 2K was still available for DOS!

Conversely, even if EA paid me to I wouldn't touch SimCIty2013. No. It's so fundamentally different in terms of both execution and philosophy from the previous games that it should never have been named "Sim City".

you all mention sim city 2000 and 4. how about 3?

also, does 4 run on 1440p resolution?
SimCity3000 is great, too. Cant go wrong with any of these. 2000 for nostalgia and fun. 3000 is still classic SimCity, doesn't really change up the formula much, but looks better. 4 is a bit more heavily revised in terms of the 'mechanics' involved and looks better still.

Just don't play anything that doesn't have a number after it. ;)
