New Kingdom Hearts 3 video from Japan's D23 Expo

The series needs to expand on what BbS did or it runs the risk of becoming stale. KH2 is shallow in the sense that it doesn't feel like you're taking the combat very far, with simple commands and basic Limit forms. BbS really evolved on the Limit forms.

They've been quite vague. Nomura has said that they'll try return to a combat system that is more like the two numbered console titles, but they won't completely forget what they were doing in BBS & DDD. So it's possibly going to be a mix of the old & new, in some way. I guess they might not have a command deck like in BBS & DDD, but they will still have all kinds of fun special attacks & powerful magic that were commands in BBS & DDD.

I really hope it still slightly veers on the older style. DDD was alright, from the little I've played BBS it was fun too, but I really just prefer the way it was in KH1&2.

Combination sounds like it could be the greatest thing ever... or the biggest mistake ever.

I actually think the footage looks promising - just don't get why they felt so compelled to show it at this point, when they clearly have so little to show.
They announced it so early exactly because it's been so long since KHII (and they wanted those fans who've waited for this long to know they are now hard at work at it, after all these years) and they are now showing it so early because people usually whine about the fact that SQEX is too secretive about their games in EVERY. SINGLE. SQEX-RELATED. THREAD.

Twilight Town looks beautiful in the new graphics engine. That was my favorite part of the trailer since it also showed pure gameplay. Not a fan of set piece battles.

Birth By Sleep is probably the best game in the series. I'm not sure why you don't care for it.

When you're used to playing the series on the ps2, it's difficult to play a sequel on inferior hardware/controls. Doesn't matter if it's a brand new story or how much effort they put into it. The end result is something worse than what I'm used to.

I'm sure BBS is a fine game. But I would have definitely hated it if I played it on the PSP instead of the PS3.

Truly great stuff.

Hopefully the HD collections will increase gamer awareness to the point KH 3 will once again be (at least) a 5 million seller and also hopefully the xbone will not hold the PS4 version back.

BbS and 3D were mainline sequels too. KH3 is developed by the same team which started working on the series from BbS onwards. It's not really about having other projects. This is just a new KH game which started development this year, and it's called KH3. People who were "waiting" for a mainline sequel while ignoring the main entries on portables simply have misplaced expectations.

Basically this.

If people need numbers:

BBS = Kingdom Hearts 0
Kingdom Hearts 1
CoM and 358/2 Days = Kingdom Hearts 1,5 parts 1 and 2
Kingdom Hearts 2
Coded and 3D = Kingdom Hearts 2.5 parts 1 and 2
Kingdom Hearts 3

That was the plot of the original Epic Mickey but in every single iteration of him afterwards he's been a good guy. Cause Disney's got plushies to sell.
Its too bad because grudge-holding semi jerk Oswald was way more interesting than "Im as bland as Mickey Mouse but with minor self esteem issues! Wa-hey!"

Itd be neat if they just retread that plot with him in KH (Milennia has a good idea with him meant to be king) and i dunno have him overtaken by a heartless or something to justify it.

please be excited I bet its coming like November 2016. with their slow development. i was hoping the new CEO would have it be pushed out much quicker..

I mean, I didn't expect them to go full deck system in the main series but I was looking forward to abilities having a cooldown scheme as that makes the game way more encouraging in regards to using all the skills you have at your disposal. Every battle becomes a fun experimentation. Having all magic tied to a single MP bar is very limiting in KH, I'm looking forward to how they'll expand on that front as I can't see them using the KH2 magic system, adding more flash and calling it a day.

Only if you try to spam special attacks and magic. I'm nearing platinum for 1.5 and I can say with certainty that the MP bar isn't limiting if you know how to gear Sora and have MP abilities on. The first KH is the most limited in its MP as well, so that says a lot.

How did it evolve? I enjoyed BBS, but the command deck/cooldown system just let me spam special moves, I rarely attacked normally for more than a couple seconds. If you prefer that type of gameplay that's fine, but I didn't like it as much as having MP and managing it.

Ignoring? No....If you want to play all of the spinoffs at release you would need to purchase
GBA, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and a PSP...blaming the consumer for not wanting to spend a large chunk of cash to play every important game in the series is ridiculous....

Well, PS2 & PSP were all you really needed until a year ago when DDD was released for 3DS. KH1, Re:CoM, II & BBS were the only essential games, skipping Days & Coded wouldn't really mean losing much in the sense of understanding the story.

Ultimately it's the same thing, though, they still need her to unseal Castle Oblivion and save Ventus, so it's likely it'll be one of the first things to be dealt with.

Which is awesome imo, sets the game up for an amazing and bound to be exciting opener.

It is quite weird trailer for SE standards. As in it is very ''non edited'' if that makes any sense and clearly is just some random test footage with bad animations (like that finishing melee attack and overall enemy reactions).

It is almost the opposite of early SE trailers that would show some story scenes and heavily edited action gameplay. This isn't really even a trailer as it is some random clips. I kinda hope they keep posting these even if they are early when we close in to E3 ect. next year to see how they progress.

Yeah I'm guessing
hoping
that they release another target render gameplay sequence at jump festa and at another event early next year with maybe one of them showing the first Disney world that is returning. Then at E3 is when the first story trailer is shown and shows us a more accurate picture of how the game will actually look and play like.

That sounds perfect. Exactly what I wanted to hear.

Has anyone made a gif yet with the Big Magic Mountain clip with the words "ALL ABOARD THE HYPE TRAIN!" yet?

Because if they haven't they're missing an easy opportunity.

Yep, that's Kingdom Hearts alright.

Time for a media blackout.

I did it for KHII, and I can do it for KHIII too...maybe.

Does anybody else see this as the next Versus XIII, as in there will be multiple delays or it might not even come out?

I'm worried because all the gameplay they've shown seem to just be tech demos instead of actual trailers or gameplay footage. It just seems like they're trying to show stuff way too early. They even used PS2 music for the recent vid.

I'm just not a fan of the whole "let's just show a few seconds of random footage without any back-story" thing.

They just started development on it...

Looks like an average early ps3 game but the environment looks ps2ish(water,rock monster & rockwalls) in hd, maybe this was once a ps3/360 game.

Still am shocked this isn't the usual square Enix 2 second extended cg of an old trailer.

Remember when that first KHII trailer was leaked?

It looked amazing, and was fuel for discussions for months.

To be fair, there were reused KH1 assets in that video and it's something they can't pull with 3 since it's not on the same platform/engine like 1~2. All the Org. XIII people are the same Unknown model, the Hollow Bastion scenery is straight up pulled from the first game (that section of it isn't even in KH2), Neoshadows are from KH1 Final Mix. The rest of the video is from the initial Twilight Town section of the game which was most likely their first vertical slice of the project.

I'm sure Nomura has a lot of things he wishes he was able to put in a cutscene-focused video but they're unable to because they have nearly nothing ready to show for a next-gen Kingdom Hearts, not to mention he's been spread too thin these past few years with all the projects + FFXV now being on full steam ahead mode.

I'm absolutely not disagreeing though, the first KH2 trailer got me hyped as fuck back then and made sure that I followed the super slow drip of media that followed. I wish we got something similar to that trailer for a KH3 reveal but both videos we got so far were shoddy all things considered, and aside from the surprise of having that first one at E3 it looks like they're once again putting themselves in a corner by announcing it so early. I thought they'd learned their lesson when it comes to this stuff but alas. Hopefully the next time we see it things won't look so undercooked.

Can someone answer me why FFXV took so long to develop? Is it really because Square Enix was just crazy crap at managing projects?

-Really big ambitious project
-Staff rumored to have been shifted to salvaging FF14
-Decision made to change it from spin-off to mainline, which I imagine changed what was required for the game (vs13 was only going to the 1 city, 15 has at least 3 cities it seems)
-PS3 being crappy to develop on
-Crystal tools being crappy to develop on

Wow, I just noticed Sora, Goofy and Donald's icons are animated. It's the little details that make it special :)

It's shit like this that reminds me of the charm, polish, and attention to detail Square used to be known for. You even saw flashes of it in Final Fantasy XIII's status screens.

Damn.

How essential is DDD to the plot? I'm assuming its vital. Does that mean I need to get a 3DS? I really don't want one.

If all you're looking for is plot then just watch the Gametrailers Timeline episode on KH. It's the best primer out there for getting up to see on the series.

Extremely early. No dynamic lighting to be found nearly anywhere. Pretty rudimentary model complexity.

Considering its coming in 2015, its off to a fantastic start. Cant wait to see more!

Using the front of the train to make the titan stagger after he throws a punch makes me think it's the player controlling the direction of the train as opposed to just being an on-rails battle.

KH2 was announced at TGS 2003, it was released in Dec 2005.

BbS was announced at TGS 2007, it was released in Jan 2010.

3D was announced at E3 2010, it was released in March 2012.

KH3 was announced at E3 2013, it will be released in....?

Now I hope this game is given a 3-4 year dev cycle and releases on 2016. I can wait for it if that's what team Osaka needs for a perfect console entry (just no FFXV-like delays but so far the series hasn't got those).

Yeah, I've said it before in other threads, but I have no issue with waiting a few years for KH3, because I've seen what the Osaka team is capable of when given enough time. I have some issues with DDD, mainly the level design and flowmotion, but as Duckroll detailed, they whipped that game up really quickly, and it's pretty damn impressive for what it is.

If you were hoping for near FMV level visuals, that's for the PS5. Even then, the animation will always have some choppiness to it unless people can settle for the slow Euphoria engine movements.

Even if it's target render stuff, they've stayed pretty realistic to what the end result could look like. I am preparing for no anti-aliasing however, even though that's quite a cynical outlook :(
