Regarding FFVII's remake:

KITASE said:
My feelings are that if a remake were to work well then all the core members of the original team must be reassembled, all the artists and designers.

The problem is that, although all of us have an idea of what a remake should be and how to do it, organising such a thing right now is logistically very difficult. All the different members are now involved in very new, very large projects like Final Fantasy XIII and those projects are going to take a while.

Maybe, when all those games are finished then we can look at doing something like that.

Of course, that said we came up with the idea for Crisis Core in just two days. It was a case of 'this is what we want to do, so let's do it'. So, you can definitely expect the probability of something spontaneous happening at some point, but it's hard to predict.

Pretty good, solid interview. worth a read.

It´s a standard response. You can read (in spanish) my question to Kitase:

YK: Well, to start with we just announced the game far, far too early. It’s something we promise to work on in the future.

Yeah, they've had that whole "announce and never show anything for years" going on, haven't they? Crisis Core, Crystal Bearers, Ring of Fates, and to a certain extent, the XIII games. Hope they improve on this.

BT: Given how established and popular the Final Fantasy VII universe is, were there any parts or characters which you wanted to go back and look at again specifically?

YK: Nibelheim. It was a huge part of the story in the original game and marked the turning point for many of the characters like Cloud, Sephiroth, Zack in this game and Tifa to a degree too. We really wanted to revisit that place and relay the event from a different perspective.

In fact, we took such great care to do it that we actually reused all the same camera angles as we did in Final Fantasy VII. Even though I was the executive producer, I stepped down to the role of event planner for that section and actually worked that entire section myself too. That was definitely the area we wanted to look at the closest.

It also happens to be the best part of the game. Kitase :bow

Any dates for this year's S-E party? Isn't it usually the middle of May?

There isn't a "usually". Last year was the second time they held such a party, 2005 I believe was the first time (and it was in July). As they haven't announced anything up to this point, I doubt they're going to hold a party this year, and if they do it won't be this month.

Ah, I see. Well hopefully they'll have a presence at e3 in July.

This is a standard reply for the FF7 remake. Want to do it, need original team, everyone busy with games like FFXIII, so just wait.

People should really stop expecting this game to suddenly be announced while FFXIII is still being worked on.

Sony really should pay S-E for exclusive rights to the FFVII universe. Even if the game is years away, it would be smart to circumvent any possibility of the game being announced for another platform. And by platform I do mean the Wii or DS. Just going with the assumption that S-E will "keep it in the family" may lead to disaster.

interviewers just won't let the remake issue die, will they?

its too soon... let's wait another 10 years ffs
No it's not. If they released a FFVII with graphics and gameplay system from FFXIII it would be amazing.

I've heard him say this before. Gotta wait til FFXIII is finished for him to do the remake...

..too bad FFXIII will never be finished!

I still find it a bit odd that versus XIII isn't the VII remake. The atmosphere of the versus XIII trailers remind me a lot of VII, but what really got me was the director of XIII saying they were going to change the design of the main character... just make him Cloud and get it over with.

Why remake such a popular title? Make a new product of the same caliber. I can only understand remakes of unsuccessful games or exceptions like TRA.

Well basically they'll start doing the remake after FFXIII is out and versusXIII is mostly done.
So the game won't arrive on the market until 2010 earliest :P Peace :(

And lose the whole point of Versus, which is to make an FF that doesn't abide to series conventions.

Because people will still keep asking no matter what. Even if they were able to make something of the same caliber, it wouldn't matter to people who want a remake of FF7.

Nice to know the Goocher hasn't been mentioned. 8P

He's not necessary for a remake since he didn't have much hands in FF7.

Also, FF7 is the only post-SNES FF game that has been severely damaged by age. 4-6 and 8-9 look good enough (though 4 still got a full remake and 5 and 6 are somewhat likely to get the same treatment)

Yes. Now I can continue with my refusal to play through FFVII fully in the deluded hope that we will see an FFVII remake.

Well in a perfect world I would like a remake of my favorite games every 5 years or so myself, just to know how they would look with different technology but I don't know how viable it would be from a commercial standpoint nowadays (if it were a 1-1 remake). Then again a 1-1 remake is probably out of the question.

GODDAMNIT TALK ABOUT FFXIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jesus christ all mighty!

Game is never coming out. SE has given up on FF and is just about making cool DS games from now on it seems.

This isn't true, as they're still doing tons of Final Fantasy. But if the proposition was true (with the addendum that they're also doing cool new 360 games), I'd be totally fine with that.

I blame JollyCorner for this. His obsession with the R is driving Kitase to the brink of doom.

Roll on PS Premiere.

That Crisis Core reference was weird. Didn't that game take years from "idea"/announcement to even the first day of production?

I don't mind, because they need more amazing games like The World Ends With You.

The games reminds me of the olden days when they could pump out amazing games without even blinking.

Though a lot are ports and remakes. The DS has been getting a lot more originality love from Square-Enix than last console generation though, that's for sure.

I clicked this thread thinking Kitase was going to be talking about Final Fantasy XIII. Now I'm sad. What in the world is taking Final Fantasy XIII so long that we haven't even seen some gameplay footage yet? Talk about an early reveal.

My guess would be 'The PS3 userbase or lack thereof'.

Really? So 4 new IPs > 9 new IPs? News to me.

I like this guy. I don't know why but Crisis Core is really pleasing me (and, to some extent, lessenning my hatred to FFVII). The story isn't what I want...but the gameplay is distilled and enjoyable. What it lacks in brains it makes up for in unoffensive replayability (the #1 killer of RPGs, to me, is the eventual feeling that the battle system (however tactical) is becomming a chore...not the story, setting, etc)

I've even started warming up to the idea of a FFVII remake...give the game another chance type of thing...
