New KOFXII Images

Hmm, a bit jaggier than I thought it'd be...
It's probably the result of the process used or it was done intentionally to get the SNK look or both. Looking at other games it's obviously possible to make it look smoother, but the way it is now evokes the old SNK, super-detailed, sprite style only in greater detail and a higher resolution.

I like it. Looks much better than the flash look SFIIHD has.

edit:

I just finished looking at all the high-res screens. Damn this game looks awesome. I've been behind SFIV for a while now, but seeing this in high res makes me wish SFIV was 2D. The expressions, the style, the overall aesthetic... I wonder if I'd have a different opinion if the SFIV character designs looked cooler.

The decision was made by SNK in Japan. No one in the US had any choice in this or any other matter, really.
SNK USA decided to refer to Maximum Impact 2 as KoF2006, which is probably the most confusing part of the whole deal.

How people championed this game's look over SFIV boggles my mind to this day.

Both games looks great and I don't think either game looks "better". 2D vs 3D is certainly a preference issue and I for one prefer the hand-drawn style of KoF XII. It just has more character to me.

The "jagginess" is a conscious decision SNK made by going with hand dotted characters instead of the much simpler anime style of something like BlazBlue.

The characters are 4 times larger and detailed than the original Neo-Geo sprites.

I figured they were upscaling the sprites from a lower-res into HD(I got flamed here for suggesting this once...oh lawd).

...I just never imagined the sprites would be THIS low-resolution. Maybe there's something wrong with these pictures, I've seen HD videos of this game and it doesn't look this bad.

Eyup. Compare this to BlazBlue, for example. It's like the KOF sprites were just upscaled from the old games. And it's looked like this from the start. How people championed this game's look over SFIV boggles my mind to this day.

You have no idea how to use your eyes.

The sprites are not low resolution, they are native 720p sprites. Snk has already said they are 4 times larger than the old sprites which makes them a perfect size for 720p.

Well they don't look native 720p to me. I'm not saying they're neo-geo res, but maybe something closer to ArcSys' fighters.

I'm sorry, are you telling me that this

Is comparable to this

I'm the one being accused of having broken eyes in this thread? Maybe it's a "stylistic decision," but it sure as hell wasn't a GOOD one.

Seriously, I think kof2002um is more interesting than kofxii right now. May Lee, Lin, Foxy, Angel, in one game. O_O

I'll spare the insults and will tell you take 2 pictures of the same size next time you want to compare KOFXII and BB graphics. Oh and anyway KOF animation are far better than the ones in BB, but I'm sure you'll shitty streaming vids to show me the contrary...

*rolleyes*

I was waiting for someone to call me on that. Those were as close as I could get them. But REGARDLESS, you can not size that KOF screen down to the size of the BlazBlue one and suddenly have those huge pixels smooth right away.

And I'm not arguing animation. Merely god-awful low-res sprites.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

It's always been like that :

KOF, lower res & better animation

GG, higher res & worse animation

EDIT : Ash's cameltoe :lol

Maybe when a game goes HD, I expect its sprites to follow! Hey, maybe that's just me! I guess if that's how it's always been though, it must be okay. Me so silly.

They look pretty comparable to me with a proper 720p image of BlazBlue, with the exception of very different art styles(I cropped the images so we can just see the characters side by side).:

The game zooms in on the characters when they are close together making them look more pixelated. Unzoomed they share the same "jaginess".

because they used a different development process?

KOFXII still plays in 2D, but Kukino noted that its graphics are different from the recent 2D fighters in the market that are colored in cel-shaded animation style (like the Guilty Gear X franchise or BlazBlue). Instead, KOFXII will feature characters that are drawn in more of the traditional, hand-dotted pixel art that the series has been known for.

BazBlue looks like crap in motion, KOFXII animates way better than BlazBlue.

Good. One point we can agree on.

Did you read the last part? IN ONE GAME? With the KOF 2k2 characters?
Did you read what you wrote ? May Lee, Lin, Foxy, Angel are all in KOF2001. That's on what you focused. Period.

nice thanks, looks like iori did lost his flames, i spot a new move, which kind of resemble's freeman's slashing move.

That seems to be the only move the guy is doing, I wish I could see more of his moves, if he lost his QCB+Px3, I will cry.

Let's repeat the comparison with proper IQ:

Man, Terry is SO bulky, especially compared to Jin :lol :lol :lol

While we see that KOFXII zooms in further, it's also apparent they used a lower res on the sprites. My opinion? Artistic choice to achieve that "KoF" look. I'm sure it will all work out well once in front of you on the screen.

Though I admit it's a slight disparity with the backgrounds.

We'll see, we'll see :-)

Just got done with KOFXI, I eagerly await for this.

It does have that KoF looks fox. You nailed it. It's great to me.

I personally love the style they're going for with the HD KOF sprites, the pixels in SNK games has always been a part of their charm. These KOF sprites look a lot like the pixel animations you'd get at in previous games intros.

Yeah my teams in KOF XI were :
Iori , Oswald,Shen
Iori,Kyo,Ash
Iori,Shen,Gai
Iori ,Shen,K'
Iori,Adel,Clark
Awesome KOF ,the best since '97 and '98
I like Iori

Holy shit at 2002 UM!! :O

I bet next they will "fuse" '98 UM and 2002 UM together for one massive old-sprite fest.

it'll probably still intact, it doesn't involve any flames anyway, maybe that slashing move is comboable but who knows. I dig the new look, more modern and less gay

Gameplay wise, it looks pretty much indentical to Guilty Gear.

As in, having 23 different bars and meters in the HUD.

Eh, I'm not tourney level so I don't bother with the extranious stuff, just enough to have fun. I love GG, so supers, just defends, bursts stuff like that I'll have fun doing playing with friends but the other stuff you don't have to bother with. I never even noticed the hud in the vids I just watched. I'm just hoping the moves are as fluid and the combos are as crazy as in Guilty Gear, and it looks like they're getting there. Their Sengoku Basara game was pretty cool and Fist of the North Star to a lesser extent but I was really not into Battle Fantasia because I went into it thinking it'd be like any other Arc Systems game and it was more like super old school style. It's weird they've made so many odd games when all I (and I think everybody else) want is a REAL sequel to Guilty Gear X2 and not some iteration, new IP or bizarre new game (2 overture).

back on topic: is this it for trade shows? will the next time we see KOF 12 is when it's near completion? how about an eta on 98 for xbla?

edit: I LOVE your vids btw, Switcher. I've shown them all to my friends and we quote them a lot. Keep up the good work, man!
