New ModNation Racers details

moriarty1975: Are the loading times any quicker since the beta?

Our public beta was released earlier in the development cycle than most other public betas. We knew our game was not optimised, but we couldn’t miss the opportunity to get some large-scale testing and player feedback. I’m happy to report that our engineers have improved load times in several different places in the final game.

First mention of a load times patch.

IGN: What's the experience been like reading reviews for the game, now that they're starting to come out. Has anything surprised you?

Dan Sochan: For the most part we've been really happy. We've seen review scores that have been quite high, lots of 9's, which is great. We've seen some comments about the load times, which is something we're aware of. It's something we're working on. It wasn't an oversight on our part at all. The way that our technology was built we were able to keep file sizes really, really small for transfer times of less than a second or a second and a half. We didn't want it to be so that you and I go online and you want to try a track I've built that's 50MB and then have you have wait five minutes to download it. That immediately became an obstacle in sharing so we created a file system where everything is built dynamically and on the fly. Everything is essentially a series of coordinates to things that are saved. The challenge with that is we're building an entire world, an entire character, an entire kart, and 12 characters online, all on the fly. There's a lot of compositing that happens with the stickers and all the different parts. Because of that, there are longer load times, but that's something we're working on for one of our first patches, to improve that and get that down significantly.

There have been concerns online about long load times in the final game and while even though UFG improved load times since the beta, they are looking into further optimizing the game via a post-launch patch!

Nice.

I've been on the fence for months about this game. Thankfully, it sounds like a pretty full-featured demo. Single player, offline multi-player, and all the creation tools. If that doesn't help me decide, nothing will.

glad that they decided to include a demo. We need this game to be a perfect as possible and a patch should help get us there. So many games now..

RDR, Mod Nation...

I still have to beat FF13, GTA IV, and a bunch of others, ugh

I dunno, this game just doesnt seem wacky enough from the reviews. MK is popular because of all the different track obstacles. Chomp chomps, fire rings, falling cocoa rocks, cows, cars, moles, penguins.

You can put giant camels and chickens on your track.

Have you watched any vids of the game, there is a shit ton of crazy shit to put on your track. I cant wait to see what people come up with given how nuts people went with lbp anywhere near the level of shit that went on in lbp and we have a kart racer that should last forever.:lol

more important here is why does the long load time happen - because they build complete world from scratch, and that way user created levels are very small.

It was posted last page. The reason it atkes so long is so you dont download a 50mb sized map each time you go online instead download a MUCH MUCH smaller file that contains coordinates which tell the engine to build certain objects on that spot. So basically the level is built while you wait to save on download usage and download time. Eitherway the problem would continue when you need to download the map.

oh shit, I didn't know that the tracks you create in the demo, carries over to the full game. That's awesome...

This demo is going to be even better than the Darksiders one (it lasted over an hour I believe) :lol .

It would be GREAT if the track you created in the demo and port over to the actual game counts toward the game's trophy but I'm guessing it doesn't. :/

this game deserves an official thread, but it's just me like like 20 other people (increase from last time :lol ) hyping it. I would make the thread myself, but I don't think I have the time right now to make a thread so awesome that it will do the game justice

From what I've played of ModNation over the last week it's a must buy.

Just wish the servers for multiplayer were live, they were supposed to go up today in the EU.

just go simple. Thread should reflect the "hype" so just throw a boxart, price, and release date :lol.

just got the game today and the european servers are offline at the moment OR there was something wrong with my connection, but I was able to log in to PSN. the loading times are horrible :( but there will be a patch stating some posts above mine so maybe it will get better. still, every time you start another event in the career mode it takes like 20 seconds to load.

the racing needs a little getting used to in my opinion, but maybe it was harder for me to get into the game because of playing hours of split second the days before. the creation tools are mighty, everything has got its own tutorial so no one should be lost. I can see people spending much time in any of the creators like in the livery mode in the forza games.

I thought the release was next week but Bestbuy seems to be selling it tomorrow. The release date in the system and on the box was for the 18th.

im doing the offical thread right now. sit tight. its quite image heavy, the official web site has proven rather useful :D
