New Pokémon: Crabrawler

How its Shiny should look:

A quick little edit I made

That seems like a nice recolor, but I'm afraid it's far too super for me

I don't mind the sandcastle Pokemon to be honest. I am not loving Crabrawler and Turtonator though. They look off for some reason.

I see so many people screaming that these are the best designed generation so far and I'm just asking myself "where"?

Funny how opinions work huh?

Man Crabrawler has really cemented itself on my team. I know bit silly to pick stuff beforehand but I want it. That makes three Pokemon that I want to toss on my team. Litten,Vikavolt and now this guy. Flying types will be a pesky problem but that comes down to me using Pallosand or Mudsdale. Still got a long time to decide that.

Is it just me, or is the Wild Pokemon Battle theme for Sun/Moon really really catchy.

I hate it. I really, really hate it.

Then again, I hated X/Y's wild/trainer battle themes before I played the game. Now they're both among my favorites.

So I guess I'll see. One thing I really enjoyed about X/Y's music is that on the whole, it felt very restrained, compared to Gen V's music which mostly felt like the composers felt like kids would find the music more interesting if each track were layered like an onion with a bunch of unnecessary noise. Sun & Moon's themes so far have been more like X/Y's but I'm not really feeling them for some reason.

Man, the more I look at Crabrawler, Palossand and Turtonator, the more I love their designs.

I wonder if James Turner designed Crabrawler. Turner is, to my knowledge, the only Western artist at Game Freak designing Pokemon. He did the Vanillite line, among others, and led the art direction (and design) for Harmo Knight and Tembo. Crabrawler wouldn't look out of place in those games.

I think its the same with every new iteration. The music takes awhile to grow on you (i didnt like the wild theme at first listen) and then afterwards you'll have your favorites.

The Japanese website added entries for the following Pokémon lines:
These are in addition to the other older ones that were added recently:
I previously wondered why these were added, but I noticed that they have written new Pokédex entries for some of them. While they typically copy/paste or rephrase old ones, this time they have enriched them with interesting lore information. For example, where Pinsir was previously paralleled with Scyther and Heracross, his rival in Alola is said to be Vikavolt. I suppose they are adding some of the Pokémon that are native in Alola but haven't developed into distinct regional variants.

I suppose that confirms no Dragonite Alola variant.

Which is disappointing, in a way, because of the possibilities.

Regional subspecies are much more interesting to me than mega evolutions ever were.

Would have preferred Crabrawler to be water/fighting but I really dig it. I really hope the Litten evo is indeed fire/dark in which case I reckon I might rock that, Crabrawler and Vikavolt as half of my team at this stage.

Pokemon aren't real animals. They're Pokemon. They'll have colors unique to them sometimes.

i mean, sure, but there's a reason Charizard is red and Blastoise is blue and Bouffalant is beige and Swirlix is pink. All of the designs try to intuitively communicate the type, and are part of what make them cohesive designs. Pokemon that don't have colours associated with either their type or inspiration bug me - designs need reasons.

There is reason for the color breakdown here. The pincers are colored separate from the rest of the body so they stand out as boxing gloves.

They went with blue gloves since red gloves would be too on the nose. Red gloves would also make it look like many crab Pokemon that already exist.

Beyond that, they made the horns yellow to resemble a blonde pompadour, and the eyelids blue to resemble a black eye.

As for the purple body, it just looks nice... although it could be a reference to how crabs come in many colors (not coconut crabs in particular, mind you, but crabs in general):

At the end of the day, it's a bit peculiar to let your enjoyment of Pokemon be limited by how "realistic" they are. Sometimes things look a certain way simply because the artist judged it was a compelling color scheme and one that makes it stand out from already established Pokemon.

Crabrawler here certainly stands out from fellow crustaceans like Kingler and Crawdaunt. :-)

Not all of. Some of them are trolls that seem to be deliberately deceptive (Girrafarrig, Gligar , Flabebe).

Pretty much.

Does anyone notice how a lot of the new Mons seem pretty buff and hefty either in stats or mechanics?

Bewear is going to be a tank and well have to see if stopping it is easy or a trial

Crabrawler slaps legends

Wishiwashi is a goon under conditions

Vikivolt could be juiced with charga or any electric boost

Salandit quitetly poisons Poison types? huh

Even Gumshoos and Lurantis seem like quiet keepers

Now that they're going to be pushing the count over 800 they realise they can't keep adding filler pokemon just because. There probably won't be anymore luvdisc or chingling from here on out. Everything is now going to be viable or at least have some niche in the game.

Not digging any of these designs. Feels like they're putting in a lot of worthless pokemon this time around. All those bugs and filler looking sea critter that will be forgotten and never used.

I'm not a huge fan of Crabrawler for whatever reason.. I think the eyes coupled with the color are too much for me.

This means no Alolan Dragonite, doesn't it?

Fuck.

that sandcastle pokemon is going to the top of my list of 'silliest fucking pokemon'

Like all you have to do to win against it is

Bully uses Kick against Nerd to Impress Lady

it's not very effective...

Yeah I felt they did this with XY, pretty much every Pokemon has some unique element to them---now not all of them exactly turned out great, but it seems there was some effort added.

It's also clear they're definitely aiming at the multiplayer crowd more, a lot of Generation VI Pokemon had their Signature Abilities and Signature Moves as Hidden Abilities and Level 1 moves, requiring the use of the Move Reminder, so most players wouldn't really get to use that stuff unless they went looking for it during the post-game.

I like this direction honestly, but I'm really glad to see it seems a lot of the new Pokemon seem to be having the crazy Abilities as their default ones instead of locking them to the post-game basically (or requiring a player to find someone to trade with) like they did with Talonflame and Diggersby where their HA made them exceed past early-game Pokemon.

I could kiss you right now. Thanks!!

Also, part of me wants to raise the most delightfully garish-looking team:

A coconut crab, a triggerfish, and a mata mata turtle <3

Thinking about Stufful/Bewear, I'm really upset it isn't Fighting/Fairy.

Between its looks and the inspirations, I just think Fairy would be a better fit. Plus that'd just be a cool type combo.

Love it regardless tho, as it's easily my favorite Gen VII Pokemon so far and actually one of my all-time favorites.

It seems pretty obvious that they went with blues and purples to evoke a "bruised" color palette because they are boxers who are constantly fighting.
why isnt it part water.
It seems to be based on Coconut Crabs which don't live in the water, they live on land.
