There's a serendipity to this game coming out on Switch specifically - both the game and the console are stuck halfway between two seemingly opposing ideas: handheld and home, Mario's welcoming charm and XCOM's hardcore appeal. And, like the Switch, Mario + Rabbids feels as though it's balancing both sides surprisingly well. While its tactical intrigue may end up a little on the slim side for dyed-in-the-wool strategists, the unexpected joy of these two worlds colliding might well be enough to keep players watching Peach incinerate her opponents through to the end - it's weird, but it works.

What's clear above all else is that Ubisoft has put a lot of passion into this game, along with respect for the Mario IP. The level of quality here is, frankly, well beyond any Rabbids games we've seen before now, and gives an almost peculiar mix of whimsy and wacky humour alongside detailed and immersive strategy. It'll be something fresh and different for Switch, certainly, and this old XCOM fan can't help but feel it could be a unique spin on its genre.
Don't let the Rabbids put you off - Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is full of exciting potential.

I was pretty jazzed for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle going in and it lived up to those expectations in the few hours I had with it. Provided it's as delightful and engaging the whole way through, my biggest problem with it is probably going to be buying myself a Nintendo Switch before it comes out at the end of this month, on August 29.

I've been on board with this game's setting and humour ever since I saw the first cutscene featuring Rabbid Peach, but I'm really pleased to see some depth in its combat. From what I've played of the first world, the game introduces these mechanics rather slowly, with the expectation that not everyone will be familiar with this genre. But having played a few of the late-game challenges, it doesn't seem afraid of introducing some real complexity, even if it takes a little while to get there.

Oh, and Princess Peach rocks a flame cannon! So there's that, too.

We're still a few weeks away from ”Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle's" August 29 release, and I've only gotten to play a small sampling of the game. But from what I've seen, Ubisoft seems to have created a Mario crossover that shows as much love for the plumber as his own parent company would.

From the silly comic relief of the rabbids to the excitement of completing a particularly difficult level and the local, yes local, co-op play, ”Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battles" is shaping up to be the kind of late-summer gaming hit you've been looking for.

The result, I found after playing an hour or two of Kingdom Battle, is a game that masks its relatively hardcore tactical gameplay under splashy, delightful graphics, character animation and silly computer-driven behavior.

Video previews
I did my preview for EGM as a 30 minute video look (1080p 60fps footage), which I cut to show a wide variety of different elements to the game. So please go have a look if you're curious to check it out!
Kinda Funny has a multiplayer Let's Play up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_FKfkrZhAg

Looks a little more advanced than some of the video shown off at E3.

My 2nd most anticipated Switch game this year right after Xenoblade 2.

And at the very least one of them will definitely come out this year.

I always believed, only watched the Ubisoft's E3 trailer and a bit of the Treehouse Live footage, want to keep the most surprises for myself to discover.
Those previews sounds really good.

I think the rabbids are cute and funny, and I love Mario. I'm a bit worried about the turn based gameplay but I'm going to give it a try. I'm going in with fairly high hopes.

So nice to see developers throw a load of stuff together that by all rights should be a hot mess and have it come up as looking good through sheer hard work and attention to detail. When I heard 'Mario x Rabbids' I was expecting a cheap party game slammed out for the summer, not a clear passion project put together by people that seem to really understand both the characters and the chosen genre. Sounds like a great intro to turn-based strategy aimed at people that might not normally play it.

Also, god is the animation in this game so good. If there was an award for animation, this game would totally be up there. It does tons of heavy lifting in making the humor work.

Quite excited for this game, which I'm still in disbelief for how well this project is presenting itself. The 29th can't come soon enough

Really looking forward to this at the end of the month. Wouldn't have believed it before the reveal.

Holy Shit that Opera boss is incredible.
My reaction, too.. didn't expect it, lol..

..

I still can't believe I want this game. If you'd told me at the start of the year, "Hey, Tom.. Ubi is making a Mario-Rabbids crossover game - and you'll be eager to play it," I would've been gobsmacked.

But here we are. This is going to be my big September game.

For some reason I keep thinking of Worms when I see this game.

A cartoon strategy game with physical comedy.

Really uncertain if I should get this day one, or just wait a while. I need my money for the SNES mini and Samus Returns, but it does look like I'd enjoy it a lot due to the X-com gameplay. Really conflicted...

Day uno.

Have to say though, I never thought I'd see
Yoshi with a rocket launcher.

Spoilered in case anyone wants to go in cold.

What strange times. My most anticipated games this month are a Sonic game not developed by Sega and a Mario game not developed by Nintendo.
Both on a Nintendo handheld console.
