New Reddit Defaults - So long, /r/adviceanimals!

In a pretty significant departure from tradition, the administrators of Reddit have reorganized the scheme of default subreddits.

Advice Animals is gone. Now, new Redditors will have to actively seek out this wonderful form of "comedy". Linked for slurs.

/r/technology was removed about a week ago, and the awful /r/politics has been un-defaulted as well. This, along with the addition of /r/twoxchromosomes and /r/listentothis (a subreddit for women and fans of independent music, respectively), suggests that the Reddit administrators want to move away from the stereotypes of the community as neckbearded and nice-guy-ish. /r/fitness and /r/getmotivated are now defaults, too. Perhaps the admins are telling Reddit to get off their asses and get in shape. /r/creepy and /r/nosleep are no default, and /r/wtf has been taken off default. This is interesting. The first two are horror subs with a shitton of awful content that many Redditors would not wish to see, and the third was meant to be a collection of strange photos, but quickly devolved into hundreds of pictures of festering wounds and dead animals. For a while, the highest-rated post was of a surgical procedure to remove some kind of scrotal infection.

In the old days of Reddit, the most popular subs would be default, but now times have changed. /r/listentothis, /r/creepy, and many of the other new additions are relatively small communities, when compared to non-default subs like /r/sex or /r/atheism. The Reddit administers have decided to move away from their "everything except child porn is allowed" policy, and have begun to take a more active role in moderating the community and controlling the public's perception of Reddit. That so many subs were added and taken off of the default list, presumably without the consent of the moderators, is huge. For the first time since the /r/jailbait scandal or the removal of /r/atheism and /r/technology from the default list, the administrators are actively deciding what should and what should not be shown to the public. I think this is pretty commendable. Although the mods of /r/twoxchromosomes must be horrified that the largely-male Redditbase will look at their subreddit, the addition of that sub might significantly help tone down the misogyny of the Reddit hivemind.

Goodbye, Advice Animals, and goodbye, WTF. You'll not be missed.

r/beatingwomen and r/candidfashionpolice, among others, are still there and in full force, so I don't think this about both moderating and public perception more than it is almost entirely about public perception.

Not shocked that it was removed. I'll still say subbed for the occasional pun or legitimately silly fad meme - but yeah, the wierd racist undertones had become too much of a problem for Reddit to actively promote.

Adviceanimals was fucking cancer with the Stormfront puffin. Though, it did provide for popcorn in abundant qualities.

I can't figure out how to navigate Reddit.

Since I'm a member already is there an easy way to just subscribe to all the new defaults?

I think the ones I'm subscribed to now are basically the defaults from when I was registered. So it really doesn't change much unless you're a new user?

It's a thing, and it's disgusting. There is also /r/rapingwomen, although both are primarily parody subs, and most of the top-rated posts are "I can't believe this sub exists", or something similarly critical. Because of Reddit's libertarian free speech policy, they weren't able to ban /r/n_ggers until very recently, through a loophole.

I prefer the term "white man's birden"

Glad to see /r/games isn't on the default list, it's one of the last large-ish subreddits that maintains some semblance of quality. Getting listed as a default subreddit is a kiss of death to most communities

Probably meant to attract new users since current users are probably subscribed to all sorts of non-default subreddits already.

I have to say, this seems like an odd selection of new defaults. The horror ones, specifically. I doubt it will impact the userbase much, since most people with accounts pick their own frontpage subreddits, but it really seems like a weird choice.

I can't figure out how to navigate Reddit.

But I see this statement, or something like it, in every single GAF thread about Reddit. Is it really that hard for you guys to figure out? I don't even really frequent the site, but it's pretty straightforward to navigate.

I have setup over 10 filters to block r/wtf. I constantly find myself resubscribed and it finding my front page though... I've unsubscribed maybe 4 times in 2014 already. Good riddance.

That's a cop-out. They just didn't want to ban that subreddit because they didn't want to be seen as stamping out free speech, which is entirely different from "not being able" to delete/ban it.

How did worldnews still make the cut? I'm surprised Reddit admins want to keep something so openly racist as a showcase.

I liked wtf. Just the comment section was so fucking annoying with every post being, "how is this wtf?". So goddam annoying and they really hurt the sub with that.

Nosleep is an interesting one.

Welp, I think they just killed the twoxchromosomes reddit. Honestly that was a good/safe place. Now? No way people are gonna feel its safe.

My big problem with WTF is that it pretty much devolved into r/gore - there's more things out there that make you think 'WTF?' than bloated dead bodies and suicide scenes.

How representative of Reddit as a whole are these threads?

I consider checking it out sometimes but it seems like a hassle

Reddit is pretty much like the world as a whole. For every 'r/picsofdeadkids' out there, there's tons and tons of 'normal' subreddits that mainly consist of normal, topical discussion. I'm actually subscribed to fairly few of the defaults, and stick to subreddits in topics that interest me.

There are always one or two people who moan about how hard it is to navigate, but it really isn't. They've got bigger issues if they can't get over how things are organized.

And the specialized subreddits can be great sources. I've got a variety of subscriptions: parrots, Formula 1, gunpla, Warhammer, and boxing for instance.

I can't figure out how to navigate Reddit.

Reddit is a site or forum made up of numerous boards called "subreddits". They all deal with various subjects and interests. There is /r/music, dealing with music, /r/earthporn, dealing with photography of nature, /r/christianity dealing with Christianity, and /r/vexillology, dealing with flags. In many ways, Reddit resembles the time before the "dot com bubble" of the 1990s. There is a subreddit for every topic, and people who create a subreddit that becomes popular may find themselves to be very influential. Unlike the 1990s, though, there is no financial return for these subreddits. It's all for fun.

On Reddit, posts are voted up or down. The highest-voted post goes to the top, followed by the highest rated comment to that post.

Let's say I posted a picture of a new Skyrim mod that turns my head into a dragon's.

The comments would go like this:

This should have been in vanilla Skyrim.
- Fuck, I'd pay for that!
- - Better than Horse Armor DLC!
- - - This is why I hate Bethesda.
- - - - Don't blame Bethesda, blame console gamers. They're the reason for this.
- No, this would be too silly.
- - Don't act like Skyrim is a serious game!

But can you breathe fire??
- of course he can breathe fire he's dragonborn
- - Would it bother you if I said I've never played the main quest?
- op pls respond
- - lol

This mod was made by RagingCorrection on the Skyrim mod nexus. Give him credit!
- ugh i hate it when people dont say who made the mods
- - karma >> credit. lern 2 reddit

Every post is its own thread, with comments replying to it. You can click the little "minus" button to minimize the comment and instead look at the next thread. A very popular comment might have hundreds of replies, with each reply having its own reply, and each of those replies having their own replies.

The current Reddit community will not have access to it, lest they chose to subscribe. This is for new members who have not yet been introduced to the hivemind. A petition from /r/twoxchromosomes might be enough to convince the administrators to revert the change, though. If moderation is strict enough, I doubt the members will feel unsafe.

Either way, /r/askwomen is a better and more inclusive subreddit.

What a weird combination of default subs. Although, I'm glad they keep changing them up and removing the awful ones like /r/politics and /r/technology.

It's like the subreddits need better checks and balances between the mods and users.
The bigger the subreddit, the worse it gets sadly.

This is good. The front page used to be terrible, with /r/politics and /r/atheism circlejerking, not to mention WTF and advice animals.

The site has a bad reputation with some but if you find the right subreddits it can be great. /r/Games is basically Neogaf without the GIFs, for example.

my thoughts exactly. damn shame, but reddit's toxic members just seem to seep into everything.

My problem with Reddit is that most subreddits are just circlejerks, where small and petty "happenings" float to the top.

The problem with Reddit comments is that they're circlejerkish by nature. Only the most popular replies go to the top, so dissenting opinions are silenced.

God I hate most of the fan sites. r/doctorwho for example used to be one of the first reddits I pulled up.

Now it's like "look, my gf baked me a Doctor Who cake!" "Look, I got a sweater!" "Look, I have 4's scarf!" "look, we built a Tardis!" "Dalek cupcakes!" "this burn mark on my toast kind of looks like K9"

/r/gallifrey is substantially better, even if I don't understand 99% of the stuff that's posted on it because the only Dr. Who I've seen is the new series.

This was my first thought too when I saw it was added to the default list. It's a great sub right now.

Its good that twoxchromosomes is in there, but not mensrights. Should deflate their shitty userbase a bit.

Reddit doesn't even require a email address to register. The twoxchromosomes subreddit will be trolled to death. About half of them will be malicious, the other half will be "for the lulz".

My problem with Reddit is that the subreddits that actually have a functional purpose by providing news are run by corporate entities.

See: /r/politics, /r/worldnews, /r/technology. So much corruption.

Even the Blizzard subreddits (/r/diablo, /r/wow, and /r/hearthstone) were corrupted and manipulated by Curse.

I think all those subs are destined to become shit now. I never have visited 2xc, but if it is a sub for women, then it will certainly become a sub of dudes telling women on how to woman.

r/gallifrey for actual discussion of the series. r/doctorwho is garbage.
