New renders from canceled Maverick Hunter game

Oh no, a non-platformer Megaman with a new art style? That would be... Just like countless other Megaman spinoffs.

Prettymuch. Mega Man's hardly a stranger to redesigns and alternate takes. If the franchise can still have some dignity after the later X games, I don't think this would soil the legacy.

Does the existence of Metroid Prime some how prevent you from enjoying 2D Metroid?

Because Maverick Hunter and 2D Megaman would have been no different in this regard.

Samus is still in her iconic suit, fighting typical Metroid enemies and traversing a very similar world to Zebes in Metroid Prime. It's a Metroid game, just FPS.

This is... not Mega Man X.

Big difference. Samus in Prime still looks very similar to her Super form and it captures her overall look.

MaverickHunter really doesn't look anythung like X. Being blue and robotic could be any of the Rock's and the giant X is just as terrible as it is on current Cyke.

Honestly I think this design looks kinda badass. I especially like the X visor and how the gun is clearly a transformed hand. Kinda disappointed this never came to fruition.

This is a type of "authentic" design I would love to see in a Metroid reboot. Always thought that Samus' blaster looked weird and kind of outdated. This Maverick design makes more sense to me: It has a modern touch to it but doesn't neglect the fact that the weapon is still an important/integral part of Samus' armour.

You know I recall similar things said about Prime before it came out years ago.

Not 2D, not a platformer, it's not the same, etc.

How the times have changed.

Bwahahah.

In all seriousness, it doesn't look too bad to me. I wish we could have seen what a game with this styling would have looked like.

So who initiated this direction for the game? It would be disappointing if Armature did it, just going back to what they left behind and it would be sad if Capcom wanted it since the Armature people left Nintendo to get out from the weight of Metroid. Either way this just seems like a huge misread on the series, like the Bomberman Act Zero attempt at reboot.

Different people have different opinions.

Also you're using You're not even using a equal arguement.

the gameplay and demisons are not being questioned.

Anyone who saw Samus saw her armor was ripped off the Super box art, here Hunter looks nothing like X or has any of the visual identifiers.

This is "old man yelling at the cloud" status, but I personally would've liked to see charge shots, or more delay between shots while making each shot matter more. Mega Man is about precision shooting and platforming (and that includes the timing as well as the aiming element), but I didn't get a feel of either from that video. Finishers seemed a little excessive too.

If it wanted to be a different game then I guess that'd be fine?

From the Polygon article that revealed the game's existence, it sounded like Inafune and his guys worked really closely with Armature on the whole project, so it sounded like a real collaboration.

Terrible design of course, but I would have liked to see a "Mega Man Prime".

Just replaced this abomination with this:

...and I'd be all over it.

I agree.

Just make Mega Man a frantic 3D shooter with cel-shaded anime graphics and some kind of really fast movement system.

And at the end of the day they were right that it wasn't the same game. But it was still Samus fighting Metroids on alien worlds.

The character here looks nothing like a Mega Man, which is itself a pretty broad spectrum. I can't say anything about the environments or the rest of the world since it was probably too early in development for any of that to have been finalized, but so far it seems like they just grafted the IP onto a random design in the hopes it would stick. Given time it probably would've developed into a great game, but for right now I'm kind of glad it didn't come out with that character.

I've never been a big fan of this design either --all the lines and "folding sheet" parts hit all the "Final Fantasy belts" stereotype alarms, but I'd be much more receptive to this design for this game than that...thing...that was originally planned.

Metroid Prime is my favorite game. Mega Man is my favorite series.

Mega Man Prime sounds awful. Mega Man is not at all suited for that kind of pace.

I'd still buy it though.

Still wish this would have happened and it was good.
I'll take rad MM over no MM. As long as the quality was there. Was even looking forward to Dino Crisis 3s change up until I played it and the game sucked in both story and gameplay.

If they game was a little closer to Mega-Man in terms of design I would had really dig this game's appearance.

I love the concept of the game, but I would had prefer a 3rd-2nd person version of the game instead. Would had been a more fresh concept and a funner game at the end of the day.

I think it looks terrible, and we have enough "bad ass realistic" style FPS games. Feels like way too much of a departure from the Mega Man X IP to really fit in the universe and carry fans over. Prime might have been a first person game, but I never felt like Metroid was cartoony or anything. Always had a middle of the ground seriousness to it and Prime fit that.

The hipsters who just "want what they can't have" that actually want ANOTHER linear corridor shooter with setpieces, generic enemies, and soulless 'macho' jingoistic art, slapped with the Megaman branding but missing the point of everything that makes Megaman great, in this thread are making me sick and their ISPs should block their internet.

Yeah because the shit we got in the later X games were ace.

To clarify so I don't come off like a jerk, MM is one of the few IPs I know of that has been many different things. All the while remaining pretty good in what it was doing. To me Maverick Hunter would have been another MM to go with the portfolio, not a replacement. MMX is considered "dark" to a extent though the later games got a bit more laughable with the balance they tried to make. On the other hand Maverick Hunter could have fully worked as the completely serious in tone MM.

Hipsters? Jingoistic?

Fuck outta here.

My main gripe with the design was any kind of combat form/helmet. Like even when they did show his face it was a projected image:

To me Mega Man needs a human face otherwise that ain't him.

Er, for the most part, those statements are true. But MP completely nails the aesthetic that the series is known for. Samus is still in her iconic suit, fighting alien life, Metroids and Ridley. This doesn't even resemble Mega Man on a basic surface level. If someone initially showed me footage of the game without giving me any context, I would have assumed it was just some random canned IP with generic robot characters.

That said, the footage doesn't really grab me at all. I doubt I would have bothered playing this regardless of whether or not the MM name was attached to it.

I remember thinking the leaked footage for this didn't look that bad. The redesign and concept of turning Mega Man into a FPS like this is Bomberman Act Zero-level of ridiculous, but had the game been actually released and titled something like "Human-killing robot asshole rampage"... I would've played it?

jingoistic

Is stringing together random adjectives the new hip thing? : p

He does have a human face. In a screenshot similar to that. The face is a projection.

edit: nvm I misread. I think it was an interesting idea but the face looks stupid.

LoL.

I hope someday we get a Maverick Hunter x Bomberman: Act Zero x Jack & Daxter 3 crossover.

Guest starring Jared Leto as the Joker.

I guess I'm the odd duckling as I wanted to see this released but am glad Silent Hills was cancelled because Kojima wanted to make it "pants shitting scary" which was not Silent Hill. But this Megaman Prime isn't Megaman either so I guess I'm selective on when I think it's okay for a series style to be broken.

Why is megaman an emotionless robot now
I wouldn't had liked it.

No thanks. I understand that the team had a good pedigree, but I just don't think it's tonally appropriate for Mega Man. At all. The series has always had a fun, bright, colorful Astro Boy-inspired aesthetic and tone (even the edgier "X" series is a Saturday morning cartoon). I have no desire for a "serious" Mega Man, though I don't mind the design taken out of context.

And I'm no purist. I've long wanted a three-dimensional Mega Man third-person shooter. Something between Jet Force Gemini and Sin & Punishment would fit the bill nicely.
