New report recounts Israeli war crimes in 2014 Gaza war

An Israeli drone strike killed two Palestinian women armed only with cell phones, a new report alleges.

The 2014 attack, which occurred in a Gaza Strip orchard, was detailed along with dozens of other, similar incidents in a series of testimonies from Israeli soldiers published by Breaking the Silence, an Israeli organization that collects first-hand accounts from Israeli soldiers involved in conflicts with Palestinians.

According to an unidentified soldier cited in the report, the two women were first spotted about half a mile from an Israeli patrol during Operation Protective Edge, a 2014 campaign against militants firing rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip.

“They were two young women  … The lookouts couldn’t see well so the commander sent a drone up to look from above, and the drone implicated them,” said the soldier.

“They directed fire there, on those girls, and they were killed,” the soldier continued. “After they were implicated, I had a feeling it was bulls—t.” Three tanks soon checked the dead women. They were unarmed, but were still listed as "terrorists" by the soldiers on hand, according to the report.

“They were fired at – so of course, they must have been terrorists,
” the soldier said.

This is one of a number of incidents described by the dozens of soldiers that Breaking the Silence says came forward to detail potential Israeli abuses during Protective Edge. The operation lasted 50 days and killed 2,100 Palestinians, with civilians accounting for between 50% and 80% of the death toll.

In a separate incident, a soldier recalled seeing a guard fire a warning shot at an elderly Palestinian man before being shot twice in the leg by a separate soldier.

“I went up to a window to see what was going on out there, and I saw there was an old man lying on the ground, he was shot in his leg and he was wounded,” said the soldier. “It was horrible, the wound was horrible, and he looked either dead or unconscious to me.”

The soldiers then began arguing about whether he was dead or alive — and whether to continue shooting him.

“What makes you an expert on death? What are you, some doctor?” The soldier remembers being asked.

“After that, some guy from the company went out and shot that man again, and that, for me, was the last straw,” he continued. "I don’t think there was a single guy in my platoon who wasn’t shocked by that. It’s not like we’re a bunch of leftists, but – why?

"Like, what the hell, why did you have to shoot him again?”

In at least once instance, a neighborhood was "reduced to piles of powdered sand," another soldier claimed. The testimonies were released Monday morning just hours after a “60 Minutes” report showed horrific scenes from the aftermath of Protective Edge.

Of the 2,100 Palestinians killed during last summer's Israeli military operations, more than 500 were children, according to "60 Minutes."

"Anything inside (the Gaza Strip) is a threat, the area has to be sterilised, empty of people and if we don't see someone waving a white flag, screaming, 'I give up', or something then he's a threat and there's authorisation to open fire," one soldier, identified in the report as an infantry sergeant, said.

I really hope this actually causes the Israeli government to stop killing civilians. Like, enough bad press and they've got to stop, right?

It was abundantly clear that IDF was targeting people and buildings at random from all the on ground reports that were coming in from reporters and pictures on twitter. People being shot at whole fleeing, being sniped at while looking for survivors in rubble, and of course those poor children on the beach who were shot at for no apparent reason. I hope one day there is a Nuremberg trial for these savages.

50-80% civilian casualty rate. I remember there was a defense force in here too.

Why? George W. Bush got reelected.
As an American looking in, this last Israeli election actually reminded me of '04 in several ways. Not surprising i guess since i think i remember reading that Netanyahu/likkud hired a republican strategist who's worked with Rove before.

50-80% civilian deaths. There are no words. And a majority of Israeli's re-elected this war criminal and mass murderer. His last minute boost in support coming from his public admission that he would continue to colonise Palestine. I mean, you can't get more heinous in political terms.

Just read about this. Its absolutely abhorrent and confirms what a lot of people already knew. Its good that the report has been drafted by an Israeli group too as this will prevent the usual accusations of anti-semitism. Israel completely relaxed their rules of engagement. Its sickening.

But how could they know they weren't calling in drone strikes with those phones? Maybe they could be thrown as weapons. You people and your anti-Semitism. /s

Honestly nothing is going to happen to these people. Hopefully Obama follows through with his threats and this forces them to back down at least.

Edit:

That is a pretty good point.

Why? George W. Bush got reelected.

How are the two really related? George W. Bush still had higher approval ratings than Obama did going into 2012 in 2004. Most exit polls always had George W. Bush ahead, especially in almost every age group. Aside from African-American voters, Dubya was getting above 45% of the Hispanic or Asian vote which is a lot for a Republican. Oil was still around $40 a barrel, Iraq wasn't really a quagmire yet, and the recession hadn't kicked off. John Kerry was portrayed as weak, a flip-flopper etc.

Here are the exit polls and polls leading up to the election. Almost all showed Bush would win.

For Netanyahu however, most polls had him losing by a wide margin. He also then went on sort of a tear reversing decades long Israeli policy, openly declaring there would never be a Palestine state as long as he is PM, he also gave a very racist and xenophobic 'barbarians are at the gates speech' style speech. He catered to last minute fear mongering and hate and stole the election in the last hour in a sense. People can pretend to be shocked all they want about Dubya winning again but he didn't 'steal the election' like they also claimed days after.

And absolutely nothing will happen to these bastards. Netanyahu and co. should be on trial at The Hague for what they've done.

Such a disgrace. The real shame is that those responsible will probably never face justice. They'll sentence some low rank soldiers who carried out orders and call it done.

You should think a nation of people who faced discrimination, proscecution and genocide for centuries would know better.

Another problem is conscription in Israel... because is mandatory, maybe everybody share the deeds of government at some extend. From a psy ops point of view it is a brilliant.

If my memory isn't deceiving me, we have/had and actual idf soldier in here too. Justifiying the use of civilians as human shields. What a horrible human, or i must say "human"?

That and the whole indoctrination people got there. I've said it before and being called for this and i don't care of what you think about but damn, Goebbels would be so proud.

This is so disgusting. Also reminds me of the any male over 16 is a soldier policy the US operates in Yemen.

This is not surprising, to say the least. The Israeli government has shown nothing but contempt for people who are not Jew. And they even use this as an excuse for what they're doing, as anyone who criticizes can be called anti semite.

Also let me be clear on my position. I think these sort of things are not exactly uncommon in war, occupation or military operations.

But thats just it. Most of America treats Israel's occupation and actions as if they are somehow above all of this. As if things like this couldn't, wouldn't and haven't happened. Despite overwhelming evidence that not only does it happen but that it has grown systemic and is getting worse.

Yet many people, mostly in America, hold even the most right-wing, hawkish leaders in Israel as if they are MLK or Gandhi. Not just American Republicans, liberals as well.

It already happened in the thread talking about the minister that was just hired preaching genocide. I expect the defense force to come out in full force.

They typically stay out of the threads where there is no way to spin the story in Israel's favor.

Then again I didn't think anyone could spin the new Justice Ministers words to try and defend her, so hey, shows what I know.

We did, but I don't remember his name. He was a regular in that Op Protective Edge thread and defending some of the dumbest shit.

Yeah, I remember him. Forget his name too. There are about a half dozen or more posters that always pop up anytime there is an incursion or a big incident. They mostly go silent about Israel in between. You know, when the reports start to trickle out confirming all of the stuff they were denying happened or was happening.

Because of that I have begun to have a very farcical feeling whenever I see them start up again. I have to basically ignore them because I really don't have respect for people that pretend to be the final word on a matter but really haven't shown they even grasp the full context of what they are speaking on.
