The graphics in Ryse have improved greatly from the original version shown on the 360, but you can see the 360 roots in the character models and animation. The character models and animation aren't state-of-the-art when compared to other next-gen titles.
1) The eyes - as several folks have remarked the eyes look and act dead. In the E3 footage Marcus is shouting to his men for 10 secs without blinking his eyes! The eyes don't move, don't blink realistically and are always focused at some fixed spot.
2) Faces/skin - no subsurface scattering model. Or if they are doing SSS, it isn't very apparent.
3) Animation - walking, running, fighting, etc. all look stiff, lacking the fluid movement demonstrated in some other next gen titles.
4) Metal shaders - something about the metal shaders just looks off. It seems to have an overly diffuse component compared to the specular component. This makes the metals look "fake" (Crytek just needs to borrow the very nice metal shaders from Forza 5). Now this may just be an art choice on Crytek's part, in which case I understand it, even though I don't like it.
Much of the other graphics technology is standard Cryengine stuff and looks fine.

Why is this game even an exclusive?
It's going to bomba in sales.
I agree. I feel this way about a lot of Crytek's work. Technical excellence but weak art design which, ultimately, makes for a visual experience that wows initially but isn't memorable or engaging in the long tern. The detail is great, but I don't know if it's the art style or what but it doesn't look that great.
Looks dull.

Doubt this will bomba. They just have to market it as Gears of Wars with swords, plus it'll get a heavy marketing push. I think MS believes this is their big launch title besides Forza. I hope it's good, because it sure LOOKS badass.
Maybe post a link to the video instead of making choppy gifs, so we can all see it?
edit: Ah its the eurogamer video I guess?
Looks great, plays terrible.
Crytek gonna Crytek.
If these are the types of games that you enjoy, more power to you.
I'm no expert in sub surface scattering but to me it looks very apparent in this picture.

Okay this is getting a bit annoying. Visually the game looks great and intertesting. But why call it Son of Rome?
The game seems to have very little in common with the historical Rome of at least our time continuum. The Architecture is totally wrong. The history is totally wrong. The Armour is totally wrong. In fact nothing in this game seems even slightly historically accurate. So why pretend it has anything to do with ancient Rome.
Historical inaccuracies seem to include:
Nero having sons. He did not have any. No Roman would ever have a son with a name Bacillus
Colosseum was built by Vespasianus only some time after the death of Nero and the year of the four emperors.
Rome doesnt look like Rome, at all
Armour is strange, like someone said in earlier thread: space roman or more like Art Deco with its Egyptian influences.
Man I was so looking forward to this game, then I saw the E3 demo, what a massive disappointment.
Yeah, that image looks incredible. I don't doubt it's gameplay either...I see a little aliasing, so it's at least in-engine at the worst.
Beautiful lighting there.
I was borderline with my pre-order for it...kept considering canceling it and waiting on it till after I put time into Forza 5 and DR3....but I think I'll keep the pre-order.

In-engine at worst? That's a 2560x1440 image with SSAA. The game may look like that on a Titan if it ahd a PC version.Yeah, that image looks incredible. I don't doubt it's gameplay either...I see a little aliasing, so it's at least in-engine at the worst.

I love Rome period movies (like Troy, 300, etc) but I don't seem to like playing Rome period games...maybe except for God Of War, but still.
Not sure if this game is going to change my mind but from the looks of it, I doubt so.
