New Ryse screenshots and story details released

.

The graphics in Ryse have improved greatly from the original version shown on the 360, but you can see the 360 roots in the character models and animation. The character models and animation aren't state-of-the-art when compared to other next-gen titles.

1) The eyes - as several folks have remarked the eyes look and act dead. In the E3 footage Marcus is shouting to his men for 10 secs without blinking his eyes! The eyes don't move, don't blink realistically and are always focused at some fixed spot.
2) Faces/skin - no subsurface scattering model. Or if they are doing SSS, it isn't very apparent.
3) Animation - walking, running, fighting, etc. all look stiff, lacking the fluid movement demonstrated in some other next gen titles.
4) Metal shaders - something about the metal shaders just looks off. It seems to have an overly diffuse component compared to the specular component. This makes the metals look "fake" (Crytek just needs to borrow the very nice metal shaders from Forza 5 :P). Now this may just be an art choice on Crytek's part, in which case I understand it, even though I don't like it.

Much of the other graphics technology is standard Cryengine stuff and looks fine.

but it still looks good doe...

The environments for this game look stupid good:

Although I think Crytek should have stuck to their original narrative/thematic concept for Kingdoms:

But then again, it probably would have had too much in common with God of War at that point.

The graphics are ok, the animations though look pedestrian from what I have seen. It sure needs a lot of work in the visual department.

I'm no expert in sub surface scattering but to me it looks very apparent in this picture.

Character modelling and effects look very nice, although I think some of the background in the vid doesn't exactly look high poly or textured. It was origianlly targeted at 360, so it is not that surprising.

This looks amazing, holy shit at the level of detail they're capturing. If this is the level of visuals for entry level games I'll be more than happy with my purchase for years to come.

The detail is great, but I don't know if it's the art style or what but it doesn't look that great.

Looks dull.

From the gifs above, the combat looks boring, yes I do mean the no QTE battles.

I agree. I feel this way about a lot of Crytek's work. Technical excellence but weak art design which, ultimately, makes for a visual experience that wows initially but isn't memorable or engaging in the long tern.

I love Rome period movies (like Troy, 300, etc) but I don't seem to like playing Rome period games...maybe except for God Of War, but still.

Not sure if this game is going to change my mind but from the looks of it, I doubt so.

Doubt this will bomba. They just have to market it as Gears of Wars with swords, plus it'll get a heavy marketing push. I think MS believes this is their big launch title besides Forza. I hope it's good, because it sure LOOKS badass.

OK was just kidding with those gifs..

here is the fighting from the video..

That looks awesome. I look forward to this game. Not sure what pictures other people are looking at when they say the graphics don't look that great. Probably because it's an Xbox only game or something.

Maybe post a link to the video instead of making choppy gifs, so we can all see it?

edit: Ah its the eurogamer video I guess?

Okay this is getting a bit annoying. Visually the game looks great and intertesting. But why call it Son of Rome?

The game seems to have very little in common with the historical Rome of at least our time continuum. The Architecture is totally wrong. The history is totally wrong. The Armour is totally wrong. In fact nothing in this game seems even slightly historically accurate. So why pretend it has anything to do with ancient Rome.

Historical inaccuracies seem to include:
Nero having sons. He did not have any. No Roman would ever have a son with a name Bacillus
Colosseum was built by Vespasianus only some time after the death of Nero and the year of the four emperors.
Rome doesnt look like Rome, at all
Armour is strange, like someone said in earlier thread: space roman or more like Art Deco with its Egyptian influences.

This looks absolutely nothing like Gears though. Nothing at all. At this stage, that comparison would do this game no favours at all.

Some of those gifs look rype for some Benny Hill music.

follow the quotes.. and you will arrive at the video.. somebody just wrote that more people needed to see this video.. I giffed it..

Yeah, that image looks incredible. I don't doubt it's gameplay either...I see a little aliasing, so it's at least in-engine cinematic at the worst. (Like Crysis)

Beautiful lighting there.

I was borderline with my pre-order for it...kept considering canceling it and waiting on it till after I put time into Forza 5 and DR3....but I think I'll keep the pre-order.

Armor looks good to me, juding by google image search. The other stuff... it's a videogame? I know where you might be coming from, though...

Man I was so looking forward to this game, then I saw the E3 demo, what a massive disappointment.

I knew nothing about this game until E3... didn't follow it at all... I came to the exact opposite conclusion you have after watching the demo.

If they get the controls good, and it fights like a Batman game... I'm all over this one. The graphics look great, and I love the time period it's in.

i have an xbox one preorder--and a ps4 p.o.--, and honestly this might push me over the edge to actually see the preorder through to a purchase,

no, not this game. that is not what is selling me on xbox one, but rather my desire to fully immerse myself in all the thinly veiled fanboyism that will dismiss anything good coming out of microsoft

im fully praying this game gets reviewed well. lots of crow, lots of tears,

please happen

I see nothing amazing or outside the realm of a launch day game on the next gen consoles in that screenshot.

None of you guys have played Crysis I take it.

In-engine at worst? That's a 2560x1440 image with SSAA. The game may look like that on a Titan if it ahd a PC version.

Style over substance it seems. I like battle systems to be intricate like Demons souls and if its not intricate it better not be the thing I am doing most in the game. Sadly fighting does seem to be what you do most in this if I understood it correctly.
