New screenshots. Older games. XBOX vs PS2?

Oh, the memories =)

OK, nobody was looking for Freedom Fighters shots but I thought they would be interesting as the game supported 720p output. Here's what it looks like.

The game is way uglier looking than I remember, however, with horrible animation, simple models, and lots of dithering. It's also slightly blurry.

But FUN! :) And great OST by C64/Amiga hero Jesper Kyd.

Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2 (GC)
Tales of Symphonia (GC)
Beach Spikers (GC)
King's Field (PS2)
Custom Robo (GC)
Phantom Crash (Xbox)

Wow, The Bouncer looks incredible for a game released in 2000. 60 fps, detailed models, and all sorts of fancy (for the time) effects. At the time, this was actually the game that convinced me the PS2 was much more capable than Dreamcast (shame the game isn't so hot). In motion, this is still very nice looking even today. The animations in game are solid and the game has an early take on ragdoll physics in there (which aren't even half bad). If only this same level of visual quality could have been used in Final Fantasy X...

Yeah, it's a bit blurry as people have always pointed out, but that kind of helps keep the jaggies at bay while providing a look that is rather different than most 3D games at the time.

That's it for the moment as I'm heading to bed here in a few. I'll capture some more tomorrow.

NFL 2K5! ...and MVP Baseball!

'The Show' has been a great baseball series this generation, but Madden needs to lose its exclusivity so we can get the greatness of NFL 2K back.

There was some brilliant-looking GC stuff. I'd love to see it posted alongside the others. TTYD, Chibi-Robo, RE4, Fire Emblem aren't necessarily lookers, but my main requests.

Would actually like to see shots of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 if you got them. With the release of KH 1.5 around the corner, I'd like to actually see some higher quality PS2 shots lol.

More shots of Conker, would definitely like some quality screen captures of the mid levels.

Any GT4 at 1080i captures? Wonder how it looks to some of GT5's standard cars & tracks.

And maybe shots of the Monte Carlo track in Rallisport Challenge 2, I remember it looking amazing.

I'm surprised at how DOA still manages to look ok on those screenshots. Even though I guess it wouldn't look that good on a big flat screen. Still, impressed.

Nice thread, OP. Subscribed. :)

DOA3 and 2K5 look to have held up extremely well. I remember playing those games at the time and thinking that the visuals were pretty much perfect.

i've got these from a while ago when i was testing a new capture program with my capture card:

it'd be interesting to look for other scenes.

MGS2 and Valkyrie Profile 2. Both games still look excellent, I think.

It's easy to see why MGS2 was so impressive back in the day. The post processing effects give the game a very smooth look that was typically not seen in 2001. When coupled with the stellar art direction and high framerate it really looked like nothing else out there. Notice the shot when Snake lands on the tanker? The Terminator-esque effects and background distortion really sell the scene. Kojima's team also spent a lot of time mimicking the effects of realistic lighting within the game. If you look at the hallway scene, for instance, you can see the ceiling lights reflected in the walls in addition to shadows drawn from proper angles. Look at how Snake is reflected in the deck of the tanker with dry spots amongst the puddles giving the impression of a water soaked surface. Of course, the reflections were tricks in that duplicate geometry was simply drawn on the reverse side of each surface. Any scene with heavy usage of reflection basically had to be rendered twice. KCEJ also put a lot of effort into hiding the texturing limitations of the PlayStation 2 with surfaces making heavy use of simply patterns and textures which relied more on lighting and shading for depth.

VP2 is also impressive. It too runs at 60 fps (though some slowdown can be felt in battle) while supporting 480p and 16:9. I chose to capture at 4:3 in order to preserve the pixel width. The game uses some sort of pseudo-HDR effects, which were becoming popular around its release. The field of grass pictured there is particularly amazing in motion as each blade appears to animate individually giving the impression of a very active field. It looks very modern, actually.

MGS2 is so crazy because it looks amazing in screens whilestill running in 60fps. We need more heavy hitters, Otogi, Ninja Gaiden, Gran Turismo and Tekken 5.

If you have them, can we get some screens from Jade Empire, KotOR, and/or Grabbed by The Ghoulies?

Edit: Star Fox Adventures would be cool as well, since I see you're also doing Game Cube games.

Ah, The Bouncer, so many memories. :)

I remember spending a whole night with a friend doing the game one shot not so far from PS2's launch.

Do Metroid Prime!

MP1 on an SDTV still looks incredible in my opinion. Really impressed me a few months back. 60fps too. Ridiculous.

Awesome thread!

The Bouncer looks insane for such an early PS2 title, great character models.

I'd be curious to see Panzer Dragoon Orta, game had a kind of fuzzy/dithered look to it and I wonder how it would look like in direct feed shots.

Shadow of Rome is a REALLY nice looking late PS2 title, runs at 60 fps with some nice texturing and specular highlights. Onimusha 3 would probably look really nice too, same engine as SoR.

Would also be interesting to see how Viewtiful Joe PS2 compares to GC in terms of image quality.

Conker is such an amazing-looking game. Dat fur.

Freedom Fighters looks like a next-gen game 'cause it's brown and I looked through the whole thread and nobody made that joke and I was like come on it's low hanging fruit but whatever I stole the fruit and made that joke.

Gotta say that Rygar has some lovely-ass colours going on. Textures are ass even by PS2 standards but damn if the colours ain't beautiful.

really really awesome thread indeed, I love seeing good-quality (comparison) screenshots of retro gameconsoles-games.

I would like to ask some more screens of roque squadron rebel strike for gamecube, as I believe that is the gamecube best-looking game, and its 60 fps at that, I might add!
I would love to have seen what FACTOR 5 could have done on gamecube targeting 30 FPS.

Also, OP, are gamecube and PS2 screenshots captured with component cables at 480p? because lots of (ntsc) games support that feature, to see the best quality possible.
