New screenshots. Older games. XBOX vs PS2?

Here's to hoping that the PS4 will closely match PS2s library.

Development is too expensive and I just can't see bad looking (relatively speaking of course) mid-range games selling for full price, which they'd need to, and I don't think the low-end prices would allow that kind of quality. But hopefully I'm wrong and we'll see something as good as last gen again :-)

Oh man, cancel the next gen, let's just go back to the Ps2. So much goodness.

Just go back to PS2 level production quality. Don't bother with extremely detailed models and textures, focus testing, marketing, big name voice actors (or voice acting fwiw). I'm still willing to pay full price if the game itself is good.

PS2 gen was best gen.

No doubt about that. God damn awesome gen.

Thanks!!
This game in motion just always WOWS me. It looks insane. Things flying all over to the place... You can't see that in screenshots. The first Wreckless had some cool filters that this game lacks but overall I think this is the best looking Xbox game technically!

I have the S-Video adapter for the Xbox, does that allow for any real discernible difference in quality compared to Composite?
Sort of. Composite sends video information in 3 signals on a single channel: a luminance signal and two chrominance signals. S-Video uses more wires to split the luminance signals onto a separate physical channel from the two chrominance signals. That the two chrominance signals are still together, and that they're usually still encoded using standards like NTSC chrominance encoding, limits you to not all that much more detail than Composite.

However, Composite can suffer from interference between luminance and chrominance signals, and S-Video does not have this issue. Here's my avatar image in its originally captured, non-downscaled form:

See all the checkerboarding, especially near vertical blue edges? That's called dot crawl, and it's the traditional manifestation of Composite signal interference. With decent filters on your TV, Composite is usually going to be a lot less artefacty than this*, but that's the type of artefact that S-Video is good at dealing with.

*Not to mention less blurry due to being sampled at a higher rate, but that's a different issue.

Metal Wolf Chaos had some incredible parts, especially the casino where you could shoot the ceiling. Looked and played awesome and was pretty funny to say the least. The intro to Otogi 2 is still one of my favourites. PDO looked and played awesome. The first Halo was almost as impressive as Unreal (when you were leaving the ship for the first time). Conker looked awesome (although it was very late in the generation and played quite badly compared to the Jak/Ratchet/Sly series). Enclave, Dreamfall, GBTG, the other two Smilebit games, the massive battles of the Kingdom Under Fire games etc etc. PGR2 was, despite being 30FPS, one of the best looking games in the generation. Maybe it was this game, or maybe RSC2 that was my favourite driving game, both looked incredible. And this is just a handful of games for the Xbox only. I don't think I can list as many from this gen from all platforms put together :-/

Did someone say Panzer Dragoon?

Okay, how about Orta?

480p captures on these ones, not as sharp as the XDK tools, which dont always work well in OSX. Not to say it doesn't work, but PDO is very soft anyway. The following are frame buffer captures :

One more for the night. X-Men Legends, 720p. Actually a really fun game too, going to come back to this one sometime.

NG aged wonderfully, still look very good.

ESPN NFL 2k5. The game is a bit off-center due to the framebuffer, but there are blackbars to account for overscan anyway on this one, so you get the full picture in this regardless of how it is aligned.

Awesome XBOX shots Borman!

I'll have to add some more to this thread sometime today, perhaps. Might pull out some PS2 versions of XBOX games posted here for comparison.

My xbox collection is about 75 games, the problem is my TV tuner is old the best i could do is S-video, also I don't know if it still works...it's on my back PC.

Stars Wars Knight of the Old Republic 1
Phantom Dust
Chronicle of Riddick
Doom 3
Ninja Gaiden Black
Splinter Cell 3
DOA2 Hardcore

Just to name a few..

A number of years ago I had a fantastic component-in TV card and took some great shots of games I was playing at the time. I'll share them with you here

I've got 100+ screens up until the second snake fight with Jill. Here's 10 random ones:

Still a great looking game. I wish modern games would revisit pre-rendered backgrounds.

REmake still impresses me, to this day.

Jill model was 10K polys. That's some gen 7 shit in a generation 6 game.

That's of cour thanks to the pre-rendered backgrounds. But evendiscounting that, the game is still gorgeous. Not only are the models beautiful, but the lightning and the backgrounds self are stunning even today.

That goes without saying, but even then it's not like you saw PS2 quality character models in PS1 prerendered games. So yeah, REmake is impressive.

anybody else using a hauppage hd pvr gaming box for capturing games? not sure if I can adjust something in the settings, but things look a bit blurry to me.

anyway, here you go, Kuon

Maaaaan, good times, this era. Back when not everything had to be focus tested to death, and games weren't just wannabe movies.

I remember playing Onimusha Warlords on PS2 and than Genma Onimusha on Xbox. And I barely noticed anything different.

I guess I always preferred the PS2, so nothing like that mattered.

I think the biggest change was the addition of green orbs, and those creepy fucking doll things... and the game was made much harder. There's supposedly a new area, but I don't remember it. Though it's been like 8 years since I've played Genma.

But the original Onimusha is still easily my favorite, because that was the only one of the trilogy (Buraiden and Dawn of Dreams don't exist) that stayed true to its setting. I really liked 2 and 3, but the former had you gallivanting off to a bunch of completely random places, and the 3rd game took place in modern Paris. Which was sweet, but uh... yeah.

Awesome shots Borman.

Looking at True Crime, I used to think that the game competed visually with Grand Theft Auto games, but damn, there is absolutely no atmosphere in there.

Do you have SoulCalibur II?

Yep Ill do some shots at some point.

720p hurts the graphics in some ways, but it isnt that pretty of a game either way.

Another Wreckless 2 video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sFzaSWP1iI

Be sure to check out the replay at the end, its quite nice graphically

Following on from my earlier REmake shots, I may as well share some shots from Onimusha (PS2):

It's actually fairly fun, its the first time I played it. Picked it up locally for nice and cheap since I knew it had HD

Was this any good? If it's half as good as CTR I should probably play it

My word hardly counts for much in this case because my memory's extremely hazy, but from what I recall, I absolutely loved CTR as a kid and played it for hours. Played Nitro Kart once, hated it for some reason (don't remember why), and never touched it again.
