But does it have Sonic 3 & Knuckles?

THAT we need to know.

Also, wasn't this supposed to have 16:9 modes?

I thought they were gonna re-code the aspect ratio or something like those N64 Emulators that let you play SM64 in Widescreen.

I actually quite like the way Sonic and Shinobi look with the filters. Comix Zone, Streets of Rage and Golden Axe all look hideous though. You can turn all that shit off, can't you?

edit: Looking forward to playing Phantasy Star IV though, willl I need to play 2 and 3 first?

Thank fuck you can turn the filters off.

I'm buying this for Shining Force 1+2 mainly, but there are some others there that interest me too.

IIRC I read a article stating that we can, I try to dig it up now, will edit this post if I can find it...
I personally think it all looks horrible with filters, they better be toggleable.

Edit: lol the link I've just found is in the OP ;p

Speaking to RPGSite, a Sega PR representative confirmed that the filter which proved controversial with fans would be optional. "I’ve had confirmation that the filter can indeed be switched off," Martin Snelling of Sega UK told us. "And the games will display at whatever ratio your console is set at – 4:3 or 16:9. If playing in 16:9 the game will fit and not have black borders at the side." he added, confirming another feature that will please fans.

I guess they will add this later then.

Even without the filters, it's gonna use the same emulator as the XBLA Mega Drive games, which means crap sound, blurry graphics (Even without the filter) and graphical glitches.

You pay for what you get.

Nah, it'll have the same stretching options that the current XBLA versions of Mega Drive/Genesis games have, and the ability to turn the graphical smoothing on or off.

I hope we can choose which games have smoothing turned on and which ones we want to stretch. Some games (Sonics) look great with the smoothing on, others not so much. I remember Comix Zone looking much better.

I'm sure you can turn the filters and stretching off completely, just like the current XBLA games.

Even though one or two of those games look decent with the filters, most look horrid. Hopefully there's an option to disable the filter.

Before I went to post this there was only one reply, and if after I finish typing this message and click Submit Reply there's not at least five replies considering those god-awful filters then GAF has failed.

Wow, I immediately though about posting "In before massive crying about the filters" and then hit the back button to see I would have been beaten majorly.

Since when was stretching a feature that pleases fans?

I've got both Sonic games and Streets of Rage 2. They all play better than they did on any previous emulated collection, Sonic 1 on the Dreamcast Classic Collection and Streets of Rage 1-3 on Sonic Gems collection all had visual and sound issues. The XBLA versions look and sound exactly as I remember and even play faster than the original PAL Mega Drive versions thanks to being proper 60hz.

Sonic 1 never looked, nor played as well to me, as it does on Xbox 360. I'll assume it'll be just as good when this game is released on PS3 too.

EDIT: I haven't played Golden Axe or Ecco beyond the trial versions, so those games may have issues I'm not familiar with. But I never played the original versions much either so I wouldn't know of any issues. Sonic 1, 2 and SoR2 are fine by me though.

But no awesome stuff like level select or debug!

Been there, done that, found the Green Knuckles in the Launch Base Zone and wore the T-shirt. I'm happy to just play the games the way the developers intended, plus online play.

My point is that those codes WERE originally in the game. If it does not allow you to pull it off in this collection, then on a game-by-game basis, you are getting GIMPED.

Eh.

Over half of those games is already on mega drive collection that was released not long time ago and it looks nice and crisp upscalled on PS3 so I personally don't see a reason for buying this other then SOR series, but paying 30$ for that makes me laugh.

The best thing they could do is re release mega drive collection and make mega drive collection 2 with different games and release both in digital on live and psn.
I mean what? The Mega Drive had so few games they have to release the same, over and over again?

Fes up on some licences sega and bring probotector and punisher port and you have sold me one.

Not really. The story and characters are different, but the games are in the same universe. For instance, sometimes there is talk about the history and different planets that happened a lot of stuff in PSI etc. You'll just see the planets again and say 'here's where the girl's hometown and planet was from PSI'. You can play PSIV perfectly without playing the others, but it would make it more special for the people who did play them all.

That's a whole lot of win for $30. Phantasy Star? Check. Every Sonic Genesis game? Check. Shining Force? Check. Anything else is just overkill.

Edit: Just noticed Beyond Oasis and Dynamite Headdy. Holy crap.

goddamn the filter

something subtle like unintrusive scanlines goes a long way

fuck this eagle shit

and no gunstar heroes makes ultimate genesis collection a misnomer

The pricing is good. I've been meaning to play PS4, so very nice. SF1-2 is a cool bonus. I've never really played Sonic, so that sounds like a good time to start. Golden Axe 1-3 and Streets of Rage 1-3 will be fun co-op. Oooh, and Dynamite Headdy. Why is there only Shinobi III, though???

The version I get will depend on whether I can config the controls (since the arcade stick changes the layout).

Revenge of Shinobi has legal issues like you wouldn't believe.

Very nice, an almost complete (for me) list of games.
Although I have the megadrive II (+8bit adapter) hooked up, it would be nice to play it full screen on the hd-tv. Crappy filters left aside for a sec :D

I won't lie, I'm getting this. The shining force games, phantasy star, (I read on another site that S3&K is in) and all those others.... definitely worth it.

Certainly more value than buying them all separately on XBLA or VC

You kind of already answered yourself. Of course XBLA Sonic is amazing to you, you had to deal with the <50Hz Megadrive games back in the day.

The XBLA versions are passable, but there are sound hickups here and there and speed hickups as well. Other than that I had no problem with the Backbone emulator.

Golden Axe, though, runs extremely well. I guess backbone's System 16 Emu is much better than their Megadrive one.

I thought the only issues to Revenge of Shinobi had to do with Spider-Man being a boss.

Spiderman, Batman, and Godzilla. And the Terminator. And to an extent The Hulk were all bosses in the original Revenge of Shinobi.
