New Super Mario Bros. - Gamespot review

A game should be judge for what it is, not what it is not. Which is why the 1up review was crap.

what a dumb platitude.

I look forward to picking this up. Sure seems to be getting a somewhat cautious reception in some ways. It will be fun to see how they extended the legacy here.

I dunno about you, but I think this has that same special 'Mario feeling' that the first couple of Marios had.

Honestly, based on what I have played so far, it really is every bit as good as those games. I can see myself coming back to this game over and over again, and just playing it for fun. Something I can't say for too many games these days.

Maybe the later stages aren't as fun? Who knows. But so far,
1)I've been challenged by it. I've died many times so far.
2)It's fun.
3)The stages don't seem that short to me.
4)The addition of the wall-jump, the butt stomp, and the triple jump make the game much more fun.
5) most of the classic sound effects are there. Except for Star-Man's theme, which I think is the N64 version.
6) Graphically, it's not a big turn-off, like so many griped about prior to it's release. Would I have preferred handdrawn? Sure. Heck, in my perfect world, it wouldn't look much better than the NES Mario 3, graphically(though I'm sure I'm alone in that department! ;) )

I'm Really enjoying it.

I'm not surprised that a few aren't experiencing the same old magic they had when they were kids. Those are very special feelings, those growing years. When you're young, everything seems much more awesome or special than it really is. That's not to take anything away from the classic Marios, of course. Those games are utterly brilliant, wether you're young or old. But for a lot of people, they expect this game to re-create those old feelings. But anybody who goes to play this and expects anything other than a really, REALLY good game, is setting themselves up for disappointment.

I like the short stages, since both Mario and Mario 3 featured direct and to the point stages, that a good player can speed through in under a minute... as compared to the extraneous padding and large levels in other platformers like Peach/the Starfi series.

I'm starting to hate Nintendo fanboys again as they are the most critical on the game.

It's a fucking excellent DS game. The platforming is brilliant and somewhat difficult, that's all I need for a platformer.

(Music is kinda rubbish though.)

AAA game, perfect portable game, finally a portable (original) Mario that is AS GOOD as the console marios. Yes, it's on par with SMB and SMB3... it isn't as unique, revolutionary, but the level design is goodness, the challenge is there, the controls are perfect, the added moves are fantastic fun. The ultimate game to take on the road.. can't ever be bored when you can pull up this gem and blast through a few levels.

I have to say so far Ive finished all of world 1 unlocked most of world 2 and have started worlds 3 and 4 and all I can say is Im fucking loving the game.

This is exactly what i was hoping for and wanted out of a new 2d gameplay platforming mario

the haters are ridiculous. This game is really really fun. 9/10. from me.

I'm trying to collect all the coins and its hard (some hard ones... especially the ones where you have to keep mini mario alive).
