This little gem is coming to us by way of the official Nintendo forums, and the poster has said that this statement is made in the newest issue of Nintendo Power. The magazine article makes no mention at all of this date being the Japanese date, and it IS in Nintendo Power…which we all know is the North American Nintendo publication. If it turns out that this isn’t the US date, then I have a bone to pick with Nintendo Power.

They're gonna lose A LOT of sales to people importing if they do that. Seriously, I bet more people import this game than any other game ever released. I mean it's MARIO, it's not like there's gonna be important dialogue or text during gameplay. Many will jump ship if they have to wait 6 months for a game due to "marketing purposes".

Only a few hardcore gamers (read: most of GAF) would import. Most consumers wouldn't bother, or even know how to import a game.

If I had to guess I'd say we'll see it around June-July along with the DS lite. In that interview with Engadget Reggie made clear that the Japanese market was first priority as far as the DS lite was concerned, I don't think we'll be seeing it in May.

It's been announced for May, but games generally don't get released on Sundays in Japan.

they have released on sunday for the the GBA, Gamecube, GBA SP, GB Micro, DS and one of the pokemon games. They do that so they can get a whole weeks worth of sales on the first week.

I've never understood this publisher mentality, either... a game like this will sell boatloads no matter what month it's released. I can see flooding the market with mediocre, licensed drek around the holidays, since you're taking advantage of the uninformed shoppers out there. For a major title, though, releasing it during a non-holiday time seems like you could potentially yield even bigger sales since your own sales aren't being taken by the multitude of other games being released at the same time as yours.

Anyway, whenever NSMB decides to come out stateside, hopefully it won't be November...

The game is not going to be delayed six months. That's just dumb. There isn't the slightest way that Nintendo could justify that. A delay like that for an RPG, sure, maybe. For a platformer of Mario's caliber? No. And it'd be stupid for Nintendo Power, an American magazine, to be running a Japanese date.

It'll be getting a near-simultaneous release... just like Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Final Fantasy IV Advance, and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.

The DS Lite is coming out in May. Why do you think Nintendo just happened to pick May for the US instead of March like Japan? Maybe because they wanted a marquee title to go along with the new system's release? Maybe?

Yes, Nintendo will want some huge title for November/December holiday sales. If it's not Mario (and there's no reason at all to think it will be), then it's most likely going to be Pokemon Diamond/Pearl.

Hmmm... you list off a lot of hardware there... so perhaps this date is for New Super Mario Bros AND the DS Lite?
