It's Mario. It'll be a full game. It was Yoshi. It became a full game. Mario 64 DS was a tech demo too. It was called Mario 64x4.

If it's an IP people love, it will become a game.

Pretty sure that Mario 128 thing with all the Marios running around eventually morphed into Sunshine. (At least the technology behind it)

Also Luigi's Mansion was a demo too.

The Mario 128 thing really became Pikmin I believe.

And eventually some of it was used in Galaxy 2 with those phantom Mario stages.

In regards to the talking previously about NSMB's aesthetic, I think the worst thing about it is that the Super Mario Galaxy series exists next to it in tandem and it has some of the strongest Mario art direction (and imo strongest art direction period in games) that has actually translated pretty well into 2D. (Remembers all those 2D sections, most notably the first level of Galaxy 2)

NSMB just comes off as a total "well it's okay, but..." kinda deal in the face of that, even if in some parts it does look pretty cool.

Mainly just the technology. The ability to have hundreds of characters all interacting at the same time. They used it for the Pikmin being able to not all run through each other. You're right. It was used, just not in Sunshine. It was really just a physics demo to show off how powerful the Cube was.

If Nintendo ever made a 2D Mario styled like Orioto's stuff, I wish shit myself with joy

but- if there were pics of Rayman at the stage in the development cycle that the new Mario is in, it would probably also look like a bunch of generic platforms too. Build the levels, then add the graphics/polish/whatever. That's usually just the way it works. It looks like NSMBWii now, sure, but who's to say?
