Sonic Mania is a great game and is surprisingly ending up as one of my favorite games this year but, if you're willing to spend $5 more, I'd highly recommend Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. It's easily my favorite 2D platformer, from it's tight level design to it's soundtrack, it's all top tier stuff. Honestly, I can NOT recommend it enough. Helps that it offers more bang for your buck

Get Sonic Mania, but also go to the store and download all the demos. There are a fair few, especially if (like many of us) you've gotten multiple region accounts.

Bit of an overreaction? Oceanhorn is far from "garbage". Its mediocre, but its not bad at all. Also, what does it being a tablet/phone game have to with anything? Sigh.
Anyway OP, Snakepass is a great little game, controls take a little bit getting used to, but once you get that down its great fun. Had a blast getting all collectables.
Oh, and theres a game called Kamiko, and its $5. Its short, and has great replayability. I thought it was perfect to play in between long zelda sessions.

Blaster Master Zero and Mighty Gunvolt Burst can be had for $10 each. I've enjoyed them both a lot. I suppose the real answer is Sonic Mania, but I haven't played it yet.
Isaac and Shovel Knight are both really great if you got a few extra bucks for the latter.

I can't recommend GoNNER enough. It's a very fun roguelite with beautiful art and addictive gameplay. It's easily my favorite Switch game.

The other suggestions are all right on point, but I will point out two lesser-known games. Levels+ is a really fun riff on the concept of threes, and Puzzle Adventure Blockle is a fun twisting maze puzzle game. (Warning: Puzzle Adventure Blockle does have an obnoxious main character and a super fanservicey female character, but the actual gameplay is solid if you are willing to ignore the faults.)
Both games are less than $10 apiece. Now, seriously, I'd suggest something like Sonic Mania or Shovel Knight or Puyo Puyo Tetris, but if you wind up with $8 somehow, try one of these.

Can't recommend this game enough, it's arcade racing at its best, a blast to play ! Sort of like an F-Zero spiritual sequel and it looks amazing in both handheld and docked.

Oceanhorn is actually quite good. Its much more like a traditional Zelda game then BotW and if you like the basic Zelda formula its worth getting.
When playing it you do have to remember that its built like a 2D top down game but presented as a 3D isometric game.

FAST RMX and GEM were good companions for Zelda at launch.
Sonic is a good suggestion but it's short - in my mind I'd want something with quick in and out and replayability:
-FAST RMX
-Graceful Explosion Machine
-Puyo Puyo Tetris
-Thumper
-VOEZ
Sonic, Blaster Master, Shovel Knight, and Wonder Boy are all great if you like platformers.
