New Tool album "10,000 Days"

For some reason, I'm really digging Wing pt. 1 & 2. A lot of tension building, things like that. Plus, I love it when artists use those effects that have the music dance around your head [when listening with headphones]. The album's pretty sweet so far.

Lyrics for Wings Part 2...hopefully you know the story behind the song before you read these:

Listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
How we rised to the height of our halo.

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Fading all the trials and the tribulations,
None of us have actually been there,
Not like you.

Ignorant fibbers in the congregation,
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choices, hippocrites won't seek.

But, nothing but the [?] of judas,
Who could deny you were the one who would have made it,
You'll have a piece of the divine.

This little light of mine it gives your past unto me,
I'll let it shine,
To guide you safely on your way,
Your way home...

Ohh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them home to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?

High as a wave, but I'll rise on up off the ground
You are the light and the way, they'll only read about.
I only pray, god only knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough, you're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I have come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now! My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings."

Give me my x5
Give me my wings.

You are the light and way, that they will only read about.

Set as I am in my wings and my arrogance,
Burning all through tossed upon the believers

You were my witness,
My eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion:
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, its time for you to bring me home.

That last stanza especially....wow

Some funny guy on Oinks' theory

This was made by Tool. Is it legit though?

Tool is talented enough to have slapped this together in order to leak it.

The lyrics aren't defined. Listen through the album, and think "what lyrics have I actually understood?" Answer: not much. There isn't a lot of material here. 5 years is a LONG time, definatly enough time to make a BS "for leak" album. How do we know that this wasn't deliberatly leaked by Tool? Do you think that they wouldn't do that?

I think that it sounds awesome. I haven't made it through so far (on Intension). This CD is definatly going to grow on me. BUT. Maybe there is another CD on its way, and this was Tool's elaborate way of saying "got you."

Think for yourself. Question Tool (and the uploader).

Oh, and uploader, Thanks. I've enjoyed it a lot.
A Tool fan is really appreciative.

(Oh, and a big part of Tool is that they transform their styles. That is why they take so long to make music... they grow as artists so that their music can grow. Maybe this is who Tool is now. Maybe. I don't know. You don't know. Tool is humorous enough to pull anything on anyone.)

Operation Mindfuck:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Mindfuck

Another point I think that supports my point is that when you listen to the drums on this album, yes, some of it is amazing, but (for hardcore Tool fans) does it live up to what we have been expecting from the new Mandala drums that Danny Carey is now going to be using onstage? View the video clips on what is possible with these drums. Know how much Danny experiments with drums and different styles (Tabla anyone). http://synesthesiacorp.com/home.html (<- videos there) http://www.dannycarey.org/page2.html (Go to technology, the future. That is what we are talking about).

I am sure that he would be exploiting this amazing resource much more, which I haven't heard anywhere in the album so far.

Just my two cents.
I love Tool. Thanks uploader.

When this CD comes out and is named Teleincision and is completely different, I will laugh.

:lol :lol

JPRaup: Yeah, he can keep telling himself that, hoping that what he's really been waiting for is still on the way. More like the poor bastard is in denial.

This album is a total bore.

My thoughts, spoilered just in case anyone could resist the desire to get it:

Vicarious - Very, very solid. Definitely seems to me like they put this song on here strictly for a single. Not that it's radio friendly by any means, but different than anything else on here. Definitely one of the lighter songs, if that's possible.

Jambi - My favorite song on the album, even though most people seem to dislike it. I love the vocals, I love the spaced out guitar. All around stunning. Somewhat a mix between Aenima and Lateralus. I love the "IF I COULD I'D WISH IT ALL AWAY" So much emotion...considering the next two songs, I believe this is also about his mother. The guitar a little after 4:00 in....holy fuck. Reminds me of the climax of the song Lateralus. "Shine on forever, shine on..."

Wings For Marie (Part 1) - Basically Parabol, but longer and just as satisfying once you hear the next track

10,000 Days (Wings Part 2) - I hesitate to say this song is amazing, given the content I believe it was written in. Maynard says "Judith Marie" during the track. Given the fact that he also says "10,000 days in the fire is long enough, you're going home" and supposedly 10,000 days is about how long his mother was paralyzed before she died, and she was very religous even after she was crippled....makes me kind of sad. Third favorite song on the album. I wish I knew all of the lyrics.
The build up is spectacular, and I love the simulated storm. From 5:30 on it is pure bliss. The vocals at around 8:00 are perfect.

The Pot - The beginning totally mindfucked me. But, it ended up being very solid. A definite departure from anything else Tool has ever done. If there is another single, it would have to be this. I could see this song being on Opiate.

Lipan Conjuring and Lost Keys - As far as fillers go, not bad at all. Lost Keys is actually pretty decent in the flow of the album.

Rosetta Stoned - Where do I begin. The beginning recording/whatever freaks me the fuck out, yet the background music keeps going. Fucking awesome. Gets to roughly 3:00 and then...well, time to blast off. Then at 6:00 it goes off again. From then on I absolutely love the guitar. On my first listen, I thought this was the highpoint of the album. After listening some more, Jambi surpasses this as number. But the last majority of the song is amazing. Plus, the ending..."DON'T KNOW, DON'T KNOW"

Intension - Reminds me a ton of Disposition in this place from Lateralus. A nice cooldown after the end of Rosetta. Not bad, but I would have liked to see more from it. Gets a bit groovy at the end. Still, a solid track. I never thought of Disposition as filler, and don't think of this as filler, either.

Right in Two - Where to begin. The beginning starts off so melodic. Then it gives me a bit of a Schism vibe. Then it takes on a life of its own. Then you get to the 5:00 mark and get blown away. Then it ends on a subtle note. God how I wish this was the end of the album.

Viginti Tres - Completely and utterly worthless and unnecessary. Shouldn't even have put it on here. Random noises, cool. At least fillers on previous albums had original stuff.

So, overall, I'm pretty blown away. But, this is way too little time to digest all of this right now. It's gonna take some time.

What's the story? I won't read it until I know.

10,000 days is roughly the time Maynard's mom spent in whatever condition she was in. Must've sucked, and I do appreciate the fact that it's kind of an ode to her, even if the album sucks.

Spare us, you've made your point.

Actually I was thinking of a positive thing to say about it, so I did.

Why don't you vent your misguided anger on someone else, as I'm being pretty civil here.

Diablos said:

Yes. One of the theories right after the title was announced, was that Maynard's mom(See the APC song Judith) was paralyzed roughly 27 years ago. 27 years is nearly 10,000 days. Looking at the lyrics, and MJK specifically saying "Judith Marie".....it's pretty obvious.

And yeah, Diablos. Troll the Tool appreciation threads that happen in like a year. Not this one.

Let us have our moment, please.

Constructive and well-thought out criticism is fine. But "blah blah blah well this CD just sucks"....get a life.

Yeah, i sure unleashed my rath on you. I can just read my post and see the anger pouring out. Good god, you love derailing threads.

Ha. I'm not trolling your 'moment'. I think it sucks, but I'm not questioning anyone as to why they like it; that's their deal, I don't care. To each his own. I personally don't like it. That's it! I'm glad you finally get to listen to it, I'm not making fun of anyone about that, I never intended to. Do you see me ripping your impressions to shreds? Hell no. I'm not going to interfere. I simply said that I think it sucks. Big whoop. If you, Eminem, cannot handle that, then you're the one that needs to "get a life".

If you're referring to me earlier saying that it leaked, I really DID hear that info, and looks like it was true.

Because I said it sucked? WHO CARES! You shouldn't even care. I'm only "derailing" it because you want me to.

I can see why people would find this boring. It's an album that either *clicks* with you, or doesn't. Fortunately for me, it *clicks* pretty damn good. I'll give it a another listen tomorrow, but right now, this is one of the year's best.

Again, to each his own. Just because I said I don't like it doesn't mean I'm trying to say "how could anyone enjoy this" or something like that.

Man, I hate to agree with Diablos, but this is a horrible album by one of the cheesiest bands making music today.
Now that's an example of derailing a thread. I didn't even insult the band. I just said I didn't like the album and that the guy from toolnavy or wherever was making a stupid prediction.

Kabuki said:
did anybody really think Diablos would say he liked the album?

his zwan bitterness runs too deep.

And so is this.

For the record, save one or two songs, Zwan's album sucked. So why you keep saying that is beyond me. Plus, you're dragging in an old argument for the sake of an argument that I didn't even want.

I saw Tool in concert when they were doing their Lateralus tour because my friend, who was a huge fan at the time, dragged me along and I didn't know any better. The arena was like 95% white trash. One memorable quote: Wait 'til you get into the mosh pit. Ya'll are gunna see why they call me the ball buster.

Some fat dude fell on my head while I was sitting.

I wasn't liking this until The Pot started. It's been uphill ever since. Solid release. I was afraid I couldn't get into them anymore.

:lol

Ouch.

Anyway, to all of you who think I have some secret plan to derail your thread: stop accusing me of something I'm not doing, and I'll stop posting in this thread. It's that simple.

I hope you all enjoy your album, you've been waiting a long time for it (and I mean that).

The worst part was when Maynard came out dressed as a preacher during Tomahawk's set and started shouting expletives and saying things about Jesus while tearing up the Bible. He threw it into the mosh pit and everyone was cheering.

Of course, when I went outside between sets, lots of the hicks were whinin' about it.

edit: nevermind what I posted before.

Thank you, sir. You are a scholar and a gentleman :)

ebw: Heh, that's pretty cool.

In Maynard's defense though, he's not just on a crusade against the Bible. I guess he went to the "Garden Center" which was really a Scientology Center, and they didn't know until they were actually playing. So Maynard started making sheep noises in between songs. :lol

edit: Em: Thank the lawd, you understand. Diablos out.

diablos leave this thread, and never look back! when the pumpkins new album comes out, it will be your time... and i will be there with you brother!

p.s. i give this album an 8 jgars out of 10! and yes, the pot is one of the top tool songs around

I'm really not enjoying The Pot (first thought was a terrible cover of a MJ song), Viginti Tres, or the first few minutes of Rosetta Stoned

good album though...just not used to skipping tracks (or fast forwarding at all) when listening to TOOL

Ok. I might have exaggerated a little when I said The Pot was the best Tool song ever. It's pretty tough to beat Lateralus.

The guitar in Rosetta Stone, for me anyway, reminds me of the guitar on Lateralus(the song), only it's rocking more. Not saying which is better, at this stage of listening for sure, but many aspects of 10000 Days revert back to older songs. I love it.

okay, even though it was funny watching some of you like Manic overreact (did you honestly thing I liked nothing on the CD but the fucking indian chant? jesus christ), i have to state for the record that the CD is fucking awesome, early (mid?) candidate for CD of the year.

normally i would've waited longer to see how many other people would obliviously let the joke fly over their heads, but i didn't want to allow myself be grouped with diablos and enjoy bell woods.

PS: When the Pot came on for the first time, I honestly thought it was James Blunt singing.

at first I read your post and was going to flame you but held back. then when I noticed the tracklistings were for the filler tracks and chuckled a bit :)

Slowly but surely waiting for it....

I heard the king of Australian music Richard Kingsmill shove Vicarious on Triple J yesterday while driving from shopping and it sounded really good.

at first i was a tad dissapointed that everything wasnt as heavy as vicarious but then i listened two the whole album and im really digging it.

same thing happened with lateralus.

the thing with tool, and they have always been this way to me, is that most of their songs don't have that "first listen is awesome!" type vibe. the problem with that is people give it a listen and say "meh", but over time the songs stand up a lot better than bands who have songs that instantly hit you in the mouth, but lose their luster quickly. great rock and roll record!

I think part of it is the progression. Knowing the song and knowing what's coming really helps the build-up to it all.

I'm on three listens, and I'm still a tad bit bummed. I'll give it another listen tomorrow. I was expecting most of the album to be like Vicarious, but it just seems a bit mundane on the whole, except for a few great parts. But I was just playing CS and DOD at the same time, so I wasn't giving my full attention to the music. I'm sure it will grow on me, like all their albums have.

on my first listen through, i didnt notice any real standout tracks, but overall, i really really enjoyed the vibe. I was grading papers at the time, and it just sounded like an hour or so of pure nonstop tool goodness. fucking solid record, day one purchase.

just wish that they'd revisit the style of tracks like eulogy or 46 and 2.
