New Uncharted screens and movies

My only concern (aside from only one path through the levels) is that I wish everything in the environment wasn't so blocky. The texturing is amazing, but you can still see that (in the videos I've watched) almost everything is made of really low-poly count models, and that takes away from it. It's not bad in screenshots, but when it's in motion it really detracts from the experience.

Sorry Pharmacy, he's already dismissed your argument. We need some gifs!

What you may be noticing (if you aren't just trolling) might be the very, shall we say convenient, design of the environments. Platforms and ledges and such standing out as being 'blocky', especially when set against the less functional parts of the environment. It's something I've noticed, and was dismayed about, but I assume such economical design is necessary trade off in favour of gameplay. Low poly counts is certainly not a problem I've ever noticed.

Take for instance, the crumbling architecture. In the past (even past Naughty Dog games) such crumbling sections were always noticeable, largely due to the higher polygon count necessitated by the action of a part of the environment breaking apart in real time. Buildings seem to break a lot more convincingly in Uncharted, it's not as obvious. My guess is that it's due to an overall higher polygon count.

I think there's always a trade off in terms of keeping that playability so the player can see what the ledges are, and where the cover points are, etc, etc.

Yea in other games the shirts are usually perfectly smooth because of hi-poly rendering. Here all you see are polygonal edges especially on the sleeves. I mean he can probably cut thru those rocks with it. Nasty man, nasty!
Oozing of sweet sarcasm. ^.^

You should let the gifs do the talking:

It would be even better with a gif of the part where they show the unshaded polygons in the environment video. Too bad I only got it in FLV.

I honestly hope that one of the unlockables it to play the game with unshaded polygons, it looked so smooth in the video.

Agreed, it's very important that the climbable ledges stand out so the player won't have to waste time on trying to climb unclimable wall or straight out getting lost in the environment.

One thing is for sure, it's not a question about processing power because then everything would have looked like the ledges/GeoW (couldn't help my self ^.^).

What video is this? I'd like to see the unshaded polygons :(

It was confirmed in an interview that you can unlock the unshaded environment mode.

Great ^.^

Just convert it to avi ?

I tried with Convexshop but it only recompiled the sound, seems like my FLV video lacks the end/length info in the header.

Okay, listen to me ND. Don't release awesome shit like this without warning. Jesus fucking Christ!

A quick gif, sorry about quality and size but I only got this shitty trial tool. :(

EDIT: The unshaded polygons also make the high quality lighting and shadows stand out more.

It's a bit weird to see this level of shadows without any shimmer, perhaps there's still a hope for shadows in this gen. ^.^

Amazing to see what some devs can yield from this system and what others can't. "Easily" hitting 30fps with all this complexity. Sony should clone these guys and put them on all their 3rd party titles. Hell, put them on Heavenly Sword 2 and give a few over to Kojima while they're at it.

Hehe, yeah. :)

Still true. :D

Well, they don't stand out always, I watched myself getting lost some few times because I didn't know what to climb like "leafs".

Do those put huge watermarks on the resultant product?

Not at all. That's what I use to make gifs.

SUPER is 100% freeware. AVD is a shareware, 20day trial version. Reinstalling it works, tho :p

Waiting on the 40GB?

I need BC unfortunately. The PS2 I have now is my brother's and I won't have it by the time I get a PS3. I'll get one next year for sure, but it might not be until Christmas time :-/

So sad! Somewhere a PS3 is waiting impatiently for you. It needs a home, won't you give it one! :D

Hey Anastacio !

A question for you. How's the framerate ? There is still tearing ?

Thanks.
I'm not the right one to ask about that. I didn't notice anything, even when there were a lot of enemies and explosions, though I won't promise there'll be no tearing or framerate issues. I really don't know. Have to give it another go then. The version did crash one time so we had to restart the debug, though it is obviously because of the beta state.

Anastacio

How far are you into the game? Chapter wise? And how long have you been playing?
I played the beta for 5 hours, it had 4 chapters - actually without saying it was the end of the chapter, as I were put back to the main menu.

Wow, that video is crrrrrazy. Thanks for the link. It's really amazing what they managed to do with their first game on the system.

It's going to be an awesome fucking wowsome franchise going forward.

What the hell are you guys talking about?

I can't tell who's being serious and what we're discussing exactly.

Talking about some of the videos & Anastacio's experience with the review beta of the game.

I think this actually proves nothing. We already knew the game looks gorgeous most of the time. Still the graphics are a mixed bag (even if on a very high level).

There are some instances where the geometry looks blocky and I dont think they will fix all of it. But they are fixing stuff. The bland lighting (which I was told was always only due to bad video compression) was fixed. The shadow flickering (which was very close to being a bug) will probably be fixed (or is already, didnt notice it lately).

And screen tearing (which IMO is definetly a BUG) will sure be gone in the final build.

Strange looking water splashing or some occurences of strange climbing physics might still remain, but who cares, for a first effort on a next gen game this looks already unbelievable.

My hopes are still extremely high and I wont be disappointed if there are still some minor problems left.

Uncharted certainly isn't exempt from criticism, but of all things some posters over on Gamersyde are complaining about the animation, the animation.

Man, may be Drake's animation is far more technologyan or something, but he moves like jerk

:lol

This game can't be 10-12h long. It's the amount of time I'm going to spend looking at the environments alone :lol

Very trew.. Iäll probably stand still alot, taking in the enviroment, checking out the surroundings and shit. :D

First time: 30 hours. ;P

Wait where are you seeing all those things? 8O Especially the bad lighting and shadow flickering.

Also what is blocky terrain? You can't honestly call Uncharted blocky when looking at other console titles.

But yes it's very blocky compared to those Pixar movies. ^.^

Exactly. Blocky compared to a Pixar movie or real life? :)

This game is just incredible... Just wanted to say that again... and, GOTY...

Have you played it..... really want to know.... I wish I could predict how a game will turn out simply based on graphics alone....

I don't doubt that this game will be damn good, but I'm a bit sick of hyperboles for an unreleased game. This is valid for all upcoming games.
