Really? After that disappointing news about the ending, I thought this trailer hyped me back up, it looks fucking amazing! Showed a few key moments of the movie and verifies that they look fucking amazing and 95% true to the source.

Can anyone shed light on this "new" ending for me?

looks like watchmen. aka awesome

rorschach looks really agile, which while not something i fully expected, is really nice in motion.

The fact that this movie is even being made, that it looks true to the source material, that its rated R, and its 3 fucking hours long... restores my faith in humanity.

Which is a good thing, because otherwise I'd just meditate on Mars and resign you all to your fate.

And i thought TDK was long.

Has it been discussed whether or not the Tales of the Black Freighter will be intertwined into the movie's main story?

They're making it, it's narrated by Gerard Butler, and there's talk of having a cut that weaves it back in, but not for the theatrical cut, no.

But hardcore fans of Watchmen know that the characters have dorky costumes.
There are what, some tens of thousands of hardcore Watchmen fans? Maybe a hundred thousand? Maybe a million? There are what, 75 or 80 million people who saw Batman? Get over yourselves, you [we] mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. This looks AMAZING.

Oh he looks just as "badass" as ol' Dan "Rippling Abs" Dreiberg.

Footage confirms a ridiculous and appalling "reenactment" of one of the finest graphic novels ever published.

Don't go see it then. Wouldn't want it to soil our perfect memories. Worse, we don't want dirty ordinary people to enjoy this, because there's no way they could possibly get it like we do, hmm?

Fanboys always shit in their own swimming pool.

I felt the same way until news of this new ending broke. It's wrong on so many levels, the most basic of which being you don't change something in a Watchmen movie so dramatically. Minor changes - eh. A whole new ending? No thanks.

But why compromise points in the movie that wouldn't have affected critical reaction or receipts but WILL piss off fanboys?

It just makes no sense.

If you're going to make a Watchmen movie, what's so wrong with sticking to the source material?

If you need to change minor things, so be it. But the entire look of character? The ending of the freaking story?!!

Just go make a new movie with new characters.

When you adapt things, it's customary to change aspects to better suit the medium. A
giant alien squid monster
will be silly in the eyes of the average everyday movie goer.

After watching the first trailer I thought maybe this film would be passable, but that was an abomination.

They're two different mediums. The real ending would have looked fucking ridiculous on screen - and the bafflement in the theater would have literally drowned out the subsequent explanation. The graphic novel, in its original format is almost unfilmable. Just go enjoy it and relax.

Protip, don't read about movie endings in advance. :) I'm disappointed that it sounds like they've changed it since it was such an amazing ending, but honestly, I am so excited about this that I can completely put that aside. It would be very difficult to convey the ending in any sort of film format too... especially if it wanted to keep an R-rating. This in IMAX will be one of the coolest few hours of my life.

The ending is basically the same as before; Ozy's overall plan and execution are maintained, as well as the outcome. It seems more sensible, actually.

I love Watchmen and I'm going to watch this so hardcore.

Few things that I noted from the trailer:

1. Rorschach's hookshot thing carries him all the way up to the top of the building; I don't like this. In the novel, it shows him being forced to climb up the rope the entire length of the building; this is important because Rorschach doesn't have high-tech Batman technology that can carry a fully grown man the height of an apartment complex, he has everyday tools like rope and hooks.

2. When they showed Dan and Laurie having sex, he had this shocked look on his face, so that bodes well for me that they'll keep in his inability to get it up.

3. Dr. Manhattan destroying the tank is pretty cool; the CG really takes me out of it, unfortunately, but I guess that can't be helpd.

4. I like the slow motion, personally; I see comics as having an inherently cinematic presentation, and for me, the slow motion kind of serves as a bridge between full-speed cinema and the panel-by-panel storytelling of graphic novels.

5. Ozy looks too young. Sorry, but it's true. This won't necessarily decrease my enjoyment of the movie at all, I'm just saying.

6. To the person who made a comment about Dan having 'rippling abs': the actor actually put on weight specifically to play the role, so I'm pretty sure the appearance of muscle is due to the costume and he'll still be out of shape.

7. Even if he gets other parts of the movie wrong (I refuse to the spoil the ending for myself, so don't even try to tell me about it), Rorschach looks like he'll be pretty much perfect; his costume, appearance, agility, voice, build, everything about him seems like it's pretty damn great.

8. Have there been any pictures or footage that has had Bubastis in it? Just curious.

Some of you guys are being real drama queens. It seems they are staying true to the ending more than anyone expected. At least it isn't LXG -level butchery.

But I guess people who have this striked out since its announcement wont change their opinion, regardless of how good it turns out.

I don't think Dr. Manhattan will be wearing that black speedo in the actual film.

He wore that during his Vietnam War era. :)

As mentioned, the kid will be shown reading the comic book in the movie, but there will be no scenes from it in the theatrical version of the movie. A separate DVD is releasing which will include 'Under the Hood' documentary and 'Black Freighter' in it's entire form (voiced by Gerald Butler). The DVD release of Watchmen will 'try' (and most probably will) to fit everything in together, making one big epic movie (most likely 2 Disc DVD aka LOTR).

FUCKING KICK.ASS!! :O

I have it on very good authority that Doc Manhattan will be "meatspinning" through the majority of the movie.

Yeah. Compared to all the other scripts, the ending for this is looking as the least-fucked-up.

I think that's why people are annoyed by this adaptation. Isn't it arrogant to presume that every great comic should be made into a movie?

Woah, that is badass!

Yeah, that poster is fucking awesome.

Spoiler Question:
Can someone remind me of why Veidt kills the Comedian? Did he find out about Ozy's plan? I can't remember that from what I read. If he didn't have a reason, it just seems odd to kill Comedian for no reason.

The Comedian found out about the plot when he flew over the unmarked island where they were building the squid and investigated it

Read this at AICN talkback and I agree 100%:

I LOVE The Smashing Pumpkins song! Kind of ironic that the end theme tune to the worst superhero movie ever made is on the traile to what many think will be the greatest superhero movie ever made! I appreciate that kind of juxtaposition, and reclaiming shit pop-culture to turn it into awesome pop-culture is kind of in keeping with what Alan Moore was doing with WATCHMEN anyway.

But leaving out the squid... if several of the cities of the world explode in a nuclear fireball, wouldn't that INITIATE a nuclear holocaust - not war, but actual HOLOCAUST? Mutually assured destruction. That ending WILL fuck this movie up, by ruining so many carefully interconnected plot points such as some of those already made: Why kill the Comedian if the ending is the squidless one? Doesn't this mean Rorscach's journal will be lost - burned to a crisp, therefore losing that fantastically dark ending? How the hell does a fake nuclear attack supposedly stop a nuclear war, instead of STARTING one? Whose dumb fucking idea was that shit ending anyway?

Alan Moore adaptations 101, RULE FUCKING ONE: DO NOT CHANGE A GODDAMNED THING. FILM IT WORD FOR WORD, SCENE FOR SCENE, OR DO NOT DO IT AT ALL.

Seems that Zack has fallen for that old "I'm smarter than that Alan Moore dude" trick, following every other shit adaptation ever made. The rest of WATCHMEN will probably look great, will be faithful as hell to the novel, and be as great as we hope. But then to ruin it by changing the end... What's the fucking point? Why bother?

I'm of the opinion that if you can't get it 100% right, don't bother. A 90% WATCHMEN isn't better than nothing - it's a half-assed attempt at greatness. FROM HELL, LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, V FOR VENDETTA - all nearly-but-not-quite adaptations. And you know what? I'd rather not have had them than see the original works sullied by their existence.

This lack of striving for 100% excellence is what gives us dross like Platinum Dunes and the like. I NEVER thought I'd see Zack Snyder - one of the best new genre film-makers this century - fuck up like this...

**crosses fingers, hopes the shit Manhattan ending is disinformation**

I wonder how they're going to have him "discover" Ozy's nuclear plan. This oughta be interesting...

I guess he could still discover the staging area but
I don't see him getting hysterical over it when he breaks down in front of Moloch

Wait, so if there is no squid, why is he killed?

Veidt could possibly still have everything planned and staged on an island. So the Comedian could still accidentally uncover it
