New Wolfenstein II Tweet Ad: "There is only one side."

Would be cool if you could unlock this guy as a playable character.

I really need to finish the first game now.

They call him the Sleeping Nazi.

It's not really a tradition if it's something America did for 4 years in the early 40s. Before that time Manifest Destiny helped to inspire their ideas of Lebensraum while Jim Crow did the same for their racial laws, and after that time they helped Nazis to escape and gave them cushy positions in their scientific research and intelligence agencies. Not to mention either installing or supporting god knows how many fascist regimes across the world.

Killing Nazis is good and cool, but this "American tradition" bullshit is wretched if you have any grasp at all of American history.

EDIT: the previous game makes the same point itself https://youtu.be/KV2xrqRRZVE

Thank you for this post

Like Pete Hines said, it's surreal that Wolfenstein is a game that is suddenly politically relevant. Glad they're not backing down from it. The New Order certainly didn't.

So does the GOP regarding numerous issues and they still manage to fuck up all the time
Yeah. It seems easy to just lean into it like they're doing now, and I love it. But it's also easy to imagine some executives not want to ruffle any feathers and roll out a weak campaign that makes no references to today's political climate. Would likely have clashed with everything in the game but I've seen weirder campaigns. So props to Bethesda for not backing down, even from a seemingly easy ace.

As far as I'm concerned we're still at war with Nazis and Fascism. Sure the Wehrmacht surrendered and Mussolini was strung up on a lamp post but the idea's are still around and are still a threat. Good that this game is reminding people of this fact.

Why do some people write "Nazis" and other people "Nazi's"? Any weird grammar rule I'm missing? Genuine question, I'm always looking into improving my English

It's an informal but common habit of some when trying to make a plural out of an unusual word, as the visual separation of the apostrophe allows a mental addition of the s sound separately of the main word and however it is otherwise spoken.

However one writes it though, so long as they remember to punch properly, it's all good.

Edit:

It may not have been intended at the time of the film's release (or maybe it was and the filmmakers were more on point than they were given credit for), but Winter Soldier's plot point about how Nazi ideology (by way of Hydra) survived and has infiltrated the upper echelons of American society feels damned prescient.

What is surreal is ALL the whining about it. I swear, this situation is so ironic it's just too funny.

Remember these people who complained about political correctness, claiming some people are over sensitive and "triggered" about nothing (when in many case, this was about important stuff) ?
The same people, today, are whining about something they think is controversive (LOL), calling it politically incorrect. Except this time, it's about a game about killing nazis. A.MA.ZING.

Is that the case? Is there actually anybody arguing that the marketing (this and the last one from a couple weeks ago) is wrong and/or inappropriate? Are actual skinheads even complaining?
Yes. There are examples in the thread you are commenting in. Maybe read the thread?
What does this even mean? How is disparaging actual literal Hitler regime Nazis an "anti-right" message in 2017? Ridiculous notion.
It means that the Trumpist right wing in America is increasingly sympathetic to actual historical Nazism. Clutching your pearls on a video game message board doesn't actually change that fact, unfortunately.
Who? Where? It's late and I admittedly haven't read through the entire thread. I can't fathom anybody complaining about these ads as being "offensive to Nazis". Never mind that "modern Nazis" aren't even the same thing as real Nazis as history knows them.
In this thread. Like, there are examples in this fucking thread. Stop clutching your pearls and read the fucking thread before commenting.

It's a fucking game about killing nazis. What the actual fuck do you think is not inherently political about that? The game you felt the need to represent yourself with on a gaming forum is quite literally is one of the most overtly political games of last gen. Do you think Ken Levine was taking the piss when he wrote the speech that introduces us to Rapture? Which is also a city literally called RAPTURE!

Quoting this post because more people should read it. What a great post.

In English, this is unnecessary (and widely considered an error) in just about every construction that isn't "mind your p's and q's."

It was late and I hadn't read the whole 12 page thread before posting. Mostly the first page.

If you're saying that there are actual neogaf users in here defending Nazis and/or offended by this ad, then this I've got to see.

If you're just talking about reddit/twitter, then I guess I shouldn't have been surprised.

Some top upvoted quotes from the other side:

Yeah, without a doubt they are intentionally bringing in contemporary politics. The first time it could possibly be excused as "we fucked up, won't do it again" but this is definitely doubling down on referring to real world assaults and arguing in favour of it.

I'm a bit conflicted on this.

Within the context of the games setting, these things make sense. But with the context of current events, it's also obvious virtue signaling, which is rather annoying as they're pandering to an insane sect of leftists that probably won't even play the damn game in the first place, by appealing to their insane logic of "anyone and everyone is a Nazi and they must be brutalized and killed".

Really, they should just axe their marketing department, because all they're doing is pitting to groups of people against each other for not good fucking reason other than to generate controversy. The goal is to sell the game to as many people as possible, not alienate a bunch of them.

ITT: People going "of course I'd punch Nazis, but..."

That's the entire point! The fact that a new Wolfenstein game is greeted not with, "oh, boy, this looks fun!", but instead with "well, obviously I hate Nazis, but this game leaves a bad taste in my mouth" is evidence that they've fucked this up to high holy hell.

So go ahead, marketers, keep stealing quotes from the headlines and trying to justify assaulting people in real life, then scurrying behind "oh, so you'd help Nazis?" when people call you on your shit. Something tells me that it won't help sales of what you're making out to be Antifa Simulator 2017, but I'm sure the Nazis and racists of the alt-right thank you for printing free recruitment materials for them.

eah, fuck this and everyone and thing associated with it. They're exploiting a political meme that's slandered countless normal people for daring to oppose Progressivism, has gotten innocent people hurt, and gave an undue spotlight to actual bigots in order to manufacturer an enemy to fight.

If they want to exploit that for money, while fanning the flames of real-world political strife, and virtue signal to the garbage humans who gleefully associate with it and the aforementioned violence, I'll spend my time and money elsewhere.

Astounded these people are so lacking in self-awareness.

Anyone have that comic saved of the rally where's there's Nazis on one side, protestors on the other, and then the "find the middle ground!" guy in the middle coming out of a trash can?

I really enjoyed that one

lmao

Should probably be mentioned that nazism in Sweden is too an ongoing situation. Might seem particularly topical to America today, but the developers might have been moved by relatively recent Swedish events involving neo nazis.

How crazy is it that if this was a few years ago we'd all be calling this a pretty tepid ad campaign?

"Yeah of course we're killing Nazis, what's there to get excited about that's new?"

Europe in general has seen a rise in nationalism over the past few years. It's definitely not just a thing in the U.S.

That 3rd post gave me so much hope and then just 180d on itself.

"Are we the baddies?"

Two fucking people using the term "virtue signaling". Why am I not surprised?

If it's not then why are people getting an erection for this tweet? It's obviously related to the current cultural climate.
It's used (there, and now commonly) as a pejorative, when it could just be (shock, horror) a company having fun with their IP considering recent events. Not everything has to be a negative or some woven conspiracy, which is what the use of 'virtue signalling' in this context implies. If anything I largely see it as them doubling down on the earlier one due to the amount of stupidity shown over it. It's more a prod to the people outraged than some attempt to promote certain values for the sake of popularity. Wolfenstein was always about killing Nazis, it's just new for them to advertise that and be met with defensive criticism. I don't blame them for playing into that.

It makes me think hard whenever someone on gaf uses it
Wow we have the new sjw whistle blowing phrase/dog whistle politicking

Anytime someone used that before to downplay an argument almost always was bullshit

Shameful

I don't know how they always keep inventing terms like this which are utterly meaninglingless just to avoid argument back? Like really

Great gif. The nazi is like ' Come at me bro' Then he thinks ' Uh, just let me rephrase that' and than 'baaaam!' Lol 😅

Pretty disturbing at the same time that those people still exist today 😞

In the actual video he screams something about deserving welfare, then puts his hand up and says "no it's ok."

No it's not, and you just got knocked the fuck out for it. Apparently when people tried to help him, they were told he was nazi trash, saw his armband, and left him.

They just don't understand what empathy is so they assume everyone is being dishonest when they care about others.

What a pity this game comes out the same day as SMO, but will pick it up once I finish Odyssey.

Luckily SMO won't eat its sales too bad on other platforms.

I wouldn't be surprised if it not coming to Switch until next year was entirely intentional specifically for this reason, seeing as it was just announced Doom is coming out [/i]before[/i] Skyrim is despite being announced much much later. I don't know how much overlap there would be between people buying SMO on Switch and TNC on PS4/XBO, but SMO despite being very different would absolutely impact sales of TNC on Switch.

I wonder if TNC Switch would launch day and date with the PS4/XBO versions if SMO had a different release date? Clearly Bethesda works very quickly.

The fear in his eyes is real. Good.

Just watched some vids on YT but damn... I never thought the situation with Nazis is that widespread in the US. As I live in Europe, the Netherlands, I just wasn't aware. It makes me angry and sick to my stomach tbh 😬😢 What a bunch of assholes.

Makes me appreciate the adds even more.

Because virtue signaling is a term used by many of the same people who spout cuck, libtard, SJW and so on.

I've never seen anyone with a swastika tattoo or clothing where I live. I see the videos on the internet but that's about it. Maybe I'm just blessed that I have never encountered situations like this.

These idiots do realize in the ad and game they are referring to Nazi's right? If people are upset about this ad campaign they are either a Nazi or a Nazi sympathizer. It is not that complicated.
