New World of Warcraft Models: Female Human

They really shouldn't be showing these off without some animation examples, even if it's just screenshots of facial expressions. They explain why she looks dead, but having the new models come off as less expressive than the old ones isn't a good first impression, and I know that isn't really the case.

That's actually a pretty solid face lift, still recognizable as the old model but doesn't look so dated.

I'm just worried that the human male will look like Varian's model because I think his model is hideous. He has ape like proportions.

I don't exactly like how soulless her eyes/expression seem to be, but apart from that it feels like a good improvement.

Well...
When developing the base model we keep the expression on the face as devoid of emotion or expression as possible, as that allows our animators a greater range of motion when they start posing and morphing the face into different expressions. If we were to put any amount of expression—even a slight smile or mildly angry eyebrows—in the base model, that would carry through to every animation, and we'd end up with some very confused-looking characters.

Edit for the new page: Watch this video of the gnome update, with animations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOkZPy5yt4w

It looks better, but still not good enough IMO, Blizz should realise that these models have to last a while right ?

Yep, it will be better in motion and with other expressions.

Just look at this happy Orc.

Need to see it in motion with actual animations and expressions. Looking at something stuck in the uncanny valley doesn't do much. ><;

So when are they gonna actually do the new character model update? Because as silly as it is, that interests me enough to possibly come back for a bit (that and I haven't played Mists of Pandaria).

You aren't missing much with Mists of Pandarrhea. Frozen Throne and Cataclysm were the peak of fun-to-be-had in WoW.

I really wanna see the hair animate on these new models.

check the youtube posted a few replies back...

BARF....

Cata was shit and a reason so many people ended up leaving at the time...MoP is just about the best Xpac aside from BC and to a lesser extent WOTLK

Looks like they upgraded from early PS2 to late PS2.

I know why they're doing it, doesn't mean I have to like it.

I'm really impressed with the work they've been doing on these new models. They are doing a great job faithfully translating the feel of the old ones and updating them to look much better, while still probably supporting low-spec PCs.

I was really, really impressed withs Mists. It was MUUUUCH better than Cataclysm was. Jade Forest and Kun'Lai Summit have some of the best art in the game imo.

I like the new female model, but like others have said it would be best to show off with animation.

The eyes are a huge improvement.

I don't play anymore but one of the characters I played frequently on my free account was a female human (because males honestly look so goofy and bad) so I guess this is cool?

Looks pretty good! Reading on how mutch work there doing for every race is amazing and mutch needed after these years looking forward to the male model and the rest off course.

I like how vacant her expression is.

That's actually on purpose and explained in the blog post:

What you’re looking at here for the Human female is a single face option and a single skin tone on the base model without any animation or posing.

Edit: Damn, super beaten.

Are they updating the look of gear too? I always thought the capes look rather silly, it's like a carpet on your back.

I'm actually a big fan of the re-models. They retain the look of the old models which although feel dated, still have a charm.

EverQuest when they had their model change went with completely new designs that didn't resemble at all what the game used to look like. It ruined the game for me. I'm digging these.

The painted shadows and shading on the muscles in particular looks very nice. It's too bad they're never going to be able to update all the low-res textures from vanilla and past expansions to match what's at display here, though.

But even so, I think I've been through with that game since playing through some of the first tier of Cataclysm content. It's a shame their next MMO won't surface until who-knows-when. That internal reboot on the project certainly isn't helping it - though I have to respect what they did there. A move like that requires balls of steel to make.

Looks great, but they really need to show it in motion with gifs or something.

Watching the Female Gnome go through her emotes @ Blizzcon was one of the most charming/amusing things I've seen from WoW.

Yeah, I would consider rolling a female gnome now. :P

Depends on your goals and what parts of WoW you enjoyed to begin with, Mists has added quite a lot of content for solo/group play.

Flex raiding is a fun distraction, raiding on the level of vanilla 10-man Mountain runs, or untimed TBC Zul'Aman runs
Normal raiding is more or less at the level it was at during early Cataclysm. Not too hard, but 10 mans can't carry more than 2 players to really succeed.
LFR is worse than it was during Cataclysm if you can believe it.
oQueue has solved most of the problems people used to have getting groups for world bosses, reputation grinds and difficult group quests.
Scenarios/Heroic Scenarios have replaced vintage 5-man quests (think Shadowmoon Valley or Netherstorm group chain quests, or the lengthy 5-man chains from Icecrown Glacier)
Casual players now have Pokemon (pet battling) and Farmville (Sunsong Ranch) distractions.
Pandaria is a beautiful continent. Probably the prettiest zones they've ever put together.
Pandas themselves are wonderfully modeled and animated and Monks are stupid overpowered, so that's fun.
Professions are shit, and will continue to be shit, but hey it's something to do.
Brawler's Guild is some of the most challenging solo content in the game.
Proving Grounds is a huge waste of time.
Timeless Isle is cool and fun, if crowded and dangerous on PvP servers.

Hmm, that's a long list. Thought I'd do better than 'Mists of Pandarrhea' nevertheless.

I liked it. Waiting to see what theyre going to do with the Night elves. Are the draenei and blood elves also getting new models before the expansion?

Oh, and still the best mmo out there.

Oh man. It's brutal reading peoples comments that have zero game character art knowledge whatsoever. Blizzard have masters working there... Some of you are so embarrassing...

Can't wait to see the others!

You don't need art knowledge to know that you don't like something.

I think they look great, though. I'll definitely up my sub for at least a month to play around with the new models. As superficial as that sounds, I had been wanting to go back to WoW and make a human Paladin, but I figured I'd just wait for these new models.

Coming from FF14 that model looks like shit haha, still a much needed improvement from the old model though. Hopefully i'll never play WoW again but my Warlock will be crying with joy i'm sure. Oh and they better fix the shitty jump animation

Are they updating the look to some of the cities as well? (Maybe they've done so already and I didn't even hear about it; haven't played the game in over 5 years).

I remember Orgrimmar looked like it was running on an N64.

They updated Stormwind and Orgrimmar in Cataclysm.

I'd love to see a single player open world action RPG in the same vein as Skyrim set in the Warcraft universe. Some people bash the art, and I do prefer the more violent Warcraft II aesthetic, but Blizzard has done a good job utilizing their art style.

I wonder if someone will post a "New WoW human models" thread in 2024.

Looks good, but I really want to see the human male. The undead look freaking sweet, so I'm hoping the human male will come out good.

I actually dont like this one very much :/
Im looking forward to seeing the trolls, especially the female.

(Unless they nerf the racials, in which case i could care less)

Need to see her in mage T3 as thats the only gear i ever wear (or wore).

Actually seeing the video with the animations makes me come around on it more.

Would play if it went f2p. I put waaaay too much time into WoW.
