Why would you build a something almost 1km high when you could build several things?

why **** one amazing looking girl when you can **** two amazing looking girls? because you can.

That is one sexy looking building.

I have to agree. Taipei 101 looks like a bunch of chinese takeout boxes stacked on top of each other. Plus it's somehow not as impressive in person as other tall buildings, maybe because it isn't surrunded by anything remotely tall so you can't properly relate it's scale to anything.

This isn't gonna keep them from building several things.

those Emirates are messing with that oil money. They are building a Tokyo + Nevada + Bahamas all rolled up into one large megalopolis.

I swear I would move there tomorrow if they allowed citizenship.

Here's it is:

They are building something larger than this:

Its called the Al Burj:

Here are some details about it:

Al Burj:
The heart and soul of Dubai Waterfront is a new downtown and central, business district, Madinat Al Arab - a thriving, vibrant cityanchored by Al Burj, one of the world's tallest buildings. Spiraling towards the sky and forming acentrepiece that embodies the ambition, vision and magnitude of the developement, this new icon features dazzling views of the harbour from luxury duplex apartments.

- Minimal height: 750m
- Predicted height: over 800m
- Possible height: 1000m
- Floor number ~ 200
- Status: Approved
- Construction end: 2009
- The developer company of Al Burj is Nakheel
- The name of the tower has been renamed in 2005, the old name was The Pinnacle
- Rumours says that with the renaming they have also raised the height of Al Burj
- Al Burj will be placed on the Palm Jumeirah artificial island in Dubai (UAE

There's something about Dubai that just strikes me as wrong. I can't imagine all that arrogance and extravagance going unpunished in some form or another.

Actually, this will be the first building to surpass the height of the CN Tower.
Yeah, but 30+ years at the top isn't so bad. I've heard they are planning to build some sort of entertainment complex near the base to get people to continue visiting after it loses the title.

So that people talk, post, and wonder about it. Were they building the world's 2nd tallest tower, they would have gotten zero headlines.

Yeah the reason why they're building all this stuff in the first place is to ensure a future revenue stream for a place that is essentially a shithole in the middle of the desert. They want Dubai to become the premier tourist destination in the world, and its already climbing the list pretty rapidly.

Also I'm not so sure about building the Al Burj on the Palm...not a very solid foundation. I remember hearing that the Palms have to be constantly re-filled with rock and silt because they are basically in a state of perpetual erosion. Could lead to a disastrous collapse..

There's already an entertainment complex at the base. It has an arcade, motion simulator ride, and a 20 minute documentary about the construction.

This is going to be a new one. It's a new "mixed use" 2 floor podium (including a partially enclosed public square) of over 70000 square feet, not including additional space for a possible aquarium.

I've been to Taipei 101 twice. The first time I was awestruck, the second time (last week), I wasn't as impressed. You're right, there's nothing nearly as tall next to it so it's hard to put it into context.

Oh, sort of like modern America, and Imperial France (Germany, Britain, Spain), and Mughal India, and ancient Egypt, and blah blah blah...

States buy and build impressive things when they have the money for them. They're often arrogant about it. Think of them as that bastard you know from college who cashed in on some patent and is currently building his second mansion and buying his fourth Ferrari.

Taipei 101 looks like a bunch of takeout boxes stacked on top each other (beaten but should be emphasized because of the shear hilarity). This building looks exceptionally ugly too so far. Considering it is being built with what is widely considered slave labor, i think it is somewhat less of an achievement. It is a great piece of architecture and engineering, but building the same type of skyscraper would be vastly inefficient in America because of labor costs.

From the CIA Factbook, the Dubai economy is 30% based on oil and fluctuates with its price.

Anyone else get a PS3-vibe from that design?

Kutaragi always used to say that the PS2 and PS3 designs were based on skyscrapers in Japan.

The man-made islands are already eroding. There are crews of people in boats spending 24 hours a day collecting and redistributing silt buildup. The set of islands shaped like the world is facing setbacks before completion and they are having people cancel their bids for homes on the islands.

Dubai's leadership is very intelligent in diversifying away from its oil reserves which will eventually run out. It will be interesting to see if these buildings will have the same longevity as their attempts at constructing man-made islands or if they will stand the tests of time.

Isn't that...almost exactly what I just said in the quote you posted?

Al Burj is a supertall skyscraper proposed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates by developer Al Nakheel. If completed it will become one of the world's tallest skyscrapers and form the centrepiece of the Dubai Waterfront, the world's largest man-made waterfront which is also being developed by Al Nakheel.

[...]

The March 16, 2007 article by Construction UAE referenced above states that the tower will indeed begin construction later this year and that it will be 1,200 meters (1.2 km or 3,937 feet) tall.

I thought they already had an entertainment complex at the base of the CN Tower?

Maybe I'm thinking of the Skylon Tower. Which BTW has a nice revolving restaurant at the top. At least last time I went. Though the last time I was in the CN Tower we went on a neat ride that simulated taking passengers to Mars... or was it the Moon? I dunno, I was like 8.
