New Zelda : A Link Between Worlds Trailers

Wow, I was worried that they would tone down the 3D effects now that the 2DS is out but I am pleasantly surprised. Those videos just scream to be played with the 3D on full blast, especially the presentation and the level design.

That's precisely my only complaint (well, aside from how ugly the game looks, but I've come to terms with that) with what I've seen in the latest trailers. That sections in 2D look very strange and I'm afraid all of us who don't play in 3D at all will have problems with them.

I have no Wow! This looks pretty heavy! idea what you're talking Wow! This looks pretty heavy! about, Link's Awakening never overburdens the Wow! This looks pretty heavy! player with superfluous You got a Piece of Power! You can feel the energy flowing through you! text

Yeah that was more annoying to me on my recent LA playthrough than Fi ever was.

And, for all the complaining about Fi ruining puzzles, few seem to mention that LA's bosses TELL YOU how to beat them just as much.

Gameplay looks great, music sounds great...

But...

Man did they ruin Link for this. He looks AWFUL.

the one on the left looks the worst to me :P

I'm not a fan of the 80s/early 90s anime art style. I don't know why they changed the middle design though, I thought it was good.

They decided to make the artwork for all the characters match the in-game character designs more closely.

I buy that

Not watching, but everything I'm hearing about sounds awesome. I'm so much more excited for this game than I thought I would be, it sounds chock-full of new and fun ideas just with a familiar package.

He looks bad in the game, too.

And the field of view is very small, I wish the camera was pulled back a fair bit. Everything is very cramped.

I'm not saying it's good. I'm saying LA does it way worse and doesn't get any shit for it; quite the opposite in fact. Constant messages popping up. Touch something without the needed item? Pick up a guardian acorn or piece of power? Bosses keep telling you in writing how to beat them.

The original didn't have such explicit hints everywhere.

Speaking of Link to the Past.... why isn't it on Wii U yet? C'mon Ninty.

Hopefully they'll spring it on us in the next couple weeks. Would be crazy to not get it before LBW is released.

Hope the game will show us Honk, Lorule's forgotten hero.

You get the opposite of that with pretty much every Zelda game since LTTP. Just once, I'd like to see them return to it.

I don't know what you mean by "opposite", implying Zelda art is some static thing. It is pretty much evolving constantly. Only Toon Link has really persisted for any length of time.

I think it is interesting looking at all three iterations of these Link designs. My heart will always be with the classic ALttP style, slightly awkward looking hero.

But we have Classic, Modern, and Painterly styles here...

New videos, but the story remains the same: maddeningly ugly graphics; gameplay (looking) good enough to render cheap fire effects a footnote. Can't wait to get my hands on this!

Yeah pretty much. The more I see, the more excited I am to play the game! But it's really such an ugly looking game to me.

I, too, prefer my Link pants-less.

The art style gives me NSMB vibes - everything is smooth and round and looks like it was constructed from nothing but geometric primitives. In this case it's like a weird halfway point between WW-style cel shading and raw N64-era 3D (which can be endearing in its own right), where it doesn't quite get any of it right but still isn't enough of a mess to actually be bad. The ragged-ness of the runic and "traditional" art found in the series makes this juxtaposition even more visible.

Gameplay looks solid though, and that's what matters. And the music is good.

People say that it looks plasticy, shiny, and smooth, but it really doesn't, at least not any more than ALttP, the game it's emulating.

A guy took screen captures of enemies from the game trying to show this and I compared them to ALttP to debunk them:

Some enemies like moldorm are actually less shiny than they were in ALttP.

Mother of God, just watched/listened to about 20 seconds before stopping it, and holy crap, it looks and sounds so good.

This and Super Mario 3D World on the same day. My head might explode from too much fun.

I say this every A Link Between Worlds thread, but you guys have no idea how happy I am to have a 'traditionally controlled' top-down Zelda again.

Gives me warm and fuzzy feelings.

I honestly like the visuals, simple and to the point. Seems to capture the charm of simple sprites, but with smooth 3D animation and such which adds more charisma to it. They could've gone with something like OoT 3D or Minish Cap with more details and the like but I really like the homage paid to Zelda at its most bare bones. The game is meant to recapture that true feeling of classic Zelda, and every game changes up the visuals in some profound way, so it's nice to see a really simple style in the series for once.

Shit, why do they always resort back to that OOT shield the design! They couldn't even just this once, change the shield up, especially considering how this game is throw back to ALLTP, but nope.

At least the in game shields are different!

Ehh, the Hylian Shield is nearly as iconic as the Master Sword at this point, I figure.

I'm more hype for this now, as I have a pre-order on the console with a copy of the game :D

Been a while since I played Link to the Past, might need to replay that to get me in the mood for this.

Game looks great.
