Next Gen Consoles Aesthetics. How Big Is Too Big?

That has nothing to do with next gen consoles. A guy from DICE confirmed it's a PC and nothing more.

Just because its a PC doesn't mean its not an indicator of what the footprint of next-gen consoles is. Obviously, I'm just pulling this out of my ass, but I wouldn't be surprised if this board has many similarities in technology with the next-gen systems. Obviously they will be heavily customized but I don't see the consoles getting more compact than this.

Bingo. I have a large tower PC case I can accomodate a large console. I would want the possible cooling environment for the internals. Not some cramped little box.

Yeah I'm just wondering if it'll affect casuals. Will they want a huge box under the TV? Or will the perception of consoles and where they sit in the living room change?

Honestly it doesn't matter to me at all. Well within reason. I had an original Xbox and was ok with that. The only point I'd have a problem is if it gets to the size of a midsize PC or larger. Then I might think twice.

Well the Japanese thought the Orig. Xbox was too big. I didn't hear any complaints about the PS3 Phat though. So based on these observations, Japanese-Big is the limit. Unless it's made by American company, then it's already too big.

I hope this answers your question.

If Sony wants it to be a standard piece of living room equipment, it needs to be in the typical living room electronics footprint.

I would also like to stack it if possible.

Basically, the smaller and more usable it is the better.

I guess it's less to do with footprint and more with how the size is actually distributed? Big but slick = good. Big and blocky = bad?

I don't care about the form factor of a console any more than I do my A/V receiver or blu-ray player. Too big would be so large that it can't fit on a shelf which is meant to hold A/V equipment. A black box that can fit on my shelf without overheating would be perfect.

Size and design of the PS2 would be perfect! I want to be able to put it vertically between two books or horizontally. The PS3 rounded upper part didn't allow me that.

MS could really shrink the size of the box a decent amount if they went with WORM SD-type Cards. Those optical drives take up some uber space.

Yeah I stand by my answer - smaller than phat PS3/Xbox, but not as small as PS2 slim.

I wonder if the new consoles will stand vertically and horizontally? I sort of like having the "mini tower" option.

If the PS4 can stand up, the PlayStation Logo better rotate!

They're based on a single chip, APU design.
I think that people will be pleasantly susprised at how small they will be.
The fat PS3 had Cell + RSX + dual bus for memory+ FlexIO bus+ + PS2 hardware, PS4 on the contrary will have just the APU and the bus to the GDDR5 pool of memory.
I expect something of the size of the 2009 Slim PS3 at launch.

Yeah these consoles will not be as big or run as hot as the launch versions of this generation of consoles.

It just needs to fit in my Ikea TV cabinet without me having to move it out for air. My phat works fine but it sounds like a vacuum.

Something like this would be great! But that´s probably unrealistic.
