Next Mortal Kombat X developer stream announced for 2/26 (Brutalities)

Yeah, there's some wicked inconsistencies with the resiliancy of the characters. There are x-rays that are far more brutal and invasive than some of these brutalities, and they survive those.

Samurai Shodown and Last Blade had this type of thing since way back. Even a "basic" hard slash, or even a normal poke, could be enough to trigger a fatal slicing, if you met the right conditions.

That's what these new Brutalities reminded me of, the most.
Yep, but those have all the posing and extra animations. The sliding torsos in SS were pretty cool but didn't have this sort of impact.

In general it looks like if it pops a limb off, aka the opponent can't play like they normally do, it's considered "fatal" and end of match. Some of the "snapped necks/something through skull" should be considered such as well, but that has more to do with how silly/stupid x-rays are than anything else. :p

Pretty much move contextual win poses.

Seems like it to me too. I still like it through.

I actually wanted something similar to this all the way back in the 90's with Street Fighter Alpha. I always through it would have been cool if you were Ryu and you finished off Sagat with a Shoryuken you would re-open the scar and blood would pool out of Sagat's chest.

A while back, I was actually thinking I would have liked a combination of this and a Arksys style Instant Kill animation with the old possible Darkstalkers reboot that was hinted at a few years ago. For example, If Demitri did a Midnight Bliss and the game could tell it was going to kill then it would play a short cinematic version of the super instead of the usual animation.

Glad to see Netherrealm is really working on the presentation of the game more and more.

I think they could've gone muuuch further with this brutality concept, as most of you think too. But still, solid fighting game from what we've been seeing since announcement.

Edit: Muuuuuch further.

I'd say SNK's efforts were going more for the "stylish" than just outright macabre, though. And of course, this was stuff dating back almost 20 years ago, as well.

But be as it may, the point was just to illustrate that this type of thing had been done before. MK's just taking it another step forward.

What are the differences between Fatalities and Brutalities? Are Fatalities still a thing in MK X?

edit: nevermind, found a video demonstrating some of the fatalities in MKX. From what I've seen, I'm loving both Brutalities and Fatailites just as much. Brutalities are short and sweet and Fatalities are as gruesome as ever.

I like how simple and sweet these are. New Mortal Kombat fatalities are too complex for their own good.

Though Sub-Zero's really should have been the spine rip from the original game.

I hope the X-Rays have unique brutalities towards them as well.

But man, NRS, you guys are doing a freiking awesome job with MKX. They deserve the praise they're getting with this game.

And now that I know the Kombat Pack is for characters not on the disc, my conscience can safely support this title now.

Boon says there are well over a 100, and there are like 24 characters, so that means everyone is going to have a lot of variety. Unless Scorpion has like 50 to himself....

Either way I like them, much better then what it could have been.
Basically tournament friendly fatalities.

what is this trash lol

Fatalities are the reason MK is known for

We are talking about MK X Brutalities compared to the cinematic Fatalities, not Fatalities in general from all the previous entries.

I dig them. I've always been a bigger fan of the quick fatalities than the drawn-out ones - making special moves be able to violently finish an opponent makes a lot of sense to me for the game. I'm curious how detailed the conditions are going to be to pull them off, though.

Unless the method for activating these is VERY specific, I think these brutalities are gonna be annoying for people who want to finish normally or with a fatality, because these won't even give you the choice.

Pretty good.

Brutalities are okay I suppose. Between X-Rays and Fatalities they set the bar so high for gory deaths that something has to go in the middle and I think that's what the Brutalities are. Some of them, where a character explodes into blood or their head comes off would be considered tame if they were fatalities, which would sound fucking weird if you were unfamiliar with the series.

My only concern with Brutalities is that they may actually be too easy to pull off. If they are attached to special moves or throws or variations etc it seems like it'd be easy to perform one by accident. Unless the execution has been simplified for the stream and there are actually a lot more hidden criteria.

Still, I'm really liking the sense of depth so far, seems like they've gone to a lot of effort with this game, animating over a hundred Brutalities and recording all the dialogue for character face offs.

Speaking of which, there must be at least four unique exchanges between any given character as each character seems to have two bits of dialogue for each adversary and that's depending on whether they start the shit talk or shoot back rebuttals. I may be squiffy with the facts and maths of that. Some of the responses which seem catered to the opponent may be generic lines the same way a lot of the Clash dialogue in Injustice: Gods Among Us was.

Anybody else noticed these anoying slowdowns in the character menu?
Each time they're zooming in again to the menu coming from a fight (it's always stuttering while zooming through the trees), and also just a bit before loading screen of next match appears.

Hopefully this will be not in the final game.

Besides of that, game is getting better and better. Can't wait.

PS: Now just please gimme Mileena tomorrow. :-)

I would imagine that it goes beyond just satisfying the conditions and doing the normal moves to trigger them - I would imagine it'll be satisfying a certain set of conditions and modifying a special move input (like pressing two punches instead of one when throwing Scorpion's spear)? Something that won't allow for accidental triggers as easily would make sense so that you always have the option to do a regular fatality if that's what you'd prefer.

Fair point! I had forgotten about SS/LB's kills.

Let's see how big is the scope of all those finishers NRS is doing =)
