Next proper Metroid Prime "would likely now be on NX", (implies NX succeeds Wii U?)

Well on the one hand it's sad there isn't another Metroid in development.

On the other hand this is quite the quote:

"If we started for Wii U now, it would likely take three years or so. So it would likely now be on Nintendo's NX console," he said.

Based on what they showed during their conference, it seems like a good number of their content into mid to late 2016 will be NX bound. New LoZ will probably be one of the last games to come out on the Wii U.

It'll be nice to finally see a new Metroid game though. Been a long time since an actual release.

They're not going to just confirm work on a new Metroid title, I don't think. Chances are that development has already started and Tanabe is just being coy about it.

What? They didn't even start development yet? So what is Retro up to?

Donkey Kong NX.
Honestly not a terrible thing probably. Means they can get it out of the way early. Could easily be a launch title considering it'll have been in development for three years by then. Then they can move on to a Metroid Prime NX quickly.

Well shit, that's quiet the statement.
For one, everyone here expects Xbox One and PS4 to still be going in 2018. Guess the Wii U won't be.
For two, that's a strong implication that the NX is a home console successor.

What was the last time a company released a console and its successor in the same generation?

Would Nintendo be the first? An 8th gen console, then its successor, which is also an 8th gen console?

Nintendo aren't just going to say "yeah we're developing a new Metroid" in an interview.

Taking this as a confirmation that they're not developing one is silly.

Honestly I don't want another Prime. I'd like to see Metroid return as a third person action adventure game. Or at least a 2.5D ha held game akin to Super Metroid.

I still think athletic Samus has potential in the 3D space as long as its married to equally good environmental design and investigation/discovery philosophies, but I will take an Echoes successor 8 days out of the week, 25 hours a day, 32 days in a month and 367 days in a year EASILY.

They're idiots if they don't after seeing the reception "Metroid Prime" Federation Force got.

It would just be a really early 9th generation platform IMO.

Welp, the dream is dead for Wii U.

So Zelda is it?

Zelda and Pokken (it's definitely coming to Wii U in 2016), unless there's some other secret Wii U titles in development that are on-par with what we're getting at the end of this year... (which is likely).

By saying "if" he is implying it is not in the works yet. Damn

That's not necessarily true. If they are already working on it and didn't want to reveal that they are working on it he would use the same language. Talking hypothetically about a game you are working on is a good way to discuss that game without confirming that you are actually working on it.

The hints all point to Metroid Prime 4 being at least being a likely thing to happen. The point of Federation Force was to set up for Metroid Prime 4 and it would be dumb to make that game if they weren't at least planning to make what they were setting up for.

Shocking news.

This was obvious as soon as Retro released Tropical Freeze. It was February 2014, and Wii U was dead and buried. They weren't going to start working on a new, high budget project for the Wii U at that point.

This interview also implies that Retro is currently not working on Metroid, though. Tanabe's response very much sounds like brainstorming about possible ideas and I don't think that he'd talk about possible gameplay ideas if the project was actually underway. Not to mention that "if we started now" strongly implies that nothing is currently in development either way. Retro has to be working on something and this something doesn't seem to be MP related.

I'm not sure if he's confirming that Metroid is not in development or if he's purely speaking in hypothetical, so like "let's assume that we're not already developing a Metroid but instead starting today". Probably me grasping at straws.

I think that's part of the struggle of supporting 2 consoles. The handheld market is dying around the world, so I would expect them to not have a dedicated handheld after the 3DS.

I think the idea for a console/handheld hybrid is the future.

Like a 3DS you can plug to a TV. Handhelds nowadays (phones in specificity) are immensely powerful.

Oh god I want that.

When did the Wii-u come out? I hope i'm not alone in thinking this seems like a seriously short life-cycle for a console...

Basically the last major Wii U title I guess. Was hoping we'd get a Mario game from EAD announced at E3, but wouldn't be surprised if theyre working on an NX launch title instead.

Well, from now on, I'm not buying a Nintendo console until the games I want are gold and near release. Fool me once.

What we were hoping to hear was that there has been a new Metroid game in development for a couple years now and would be prime (lol) for a 2015 release.

Clearly it's too late to start a new one for WiiU now...

Didn't Sega release the Saturn and Dreamcast in the same gen technically?
Not that I am saying Nintendo = Sega or anything...

Also NX confirmed to be as powerful as a console, so that is nice.

I wonder if that means that Wii U game that Retro said they were working on was canned or also moved to NX . Not that I think it was Metroid, although I wonder how many teams Retro has.

"If we started" has a very strong implication that they don't have one in development.

So to all those defenders in the MP Federation Force thread saying that game is obviously just an appetizer while they're working on the next proper MP, welllllp. Denied.

Metroid Prime is cool and all but I'd rather see them do something else. I know that they experimented with Other M but how about a return to the platforming genre?

Why not release Metroid Dread finally?
