Microsoft's on the, erm, threshold of something big -- something that's likely to make its three major operating systems even more similar. Queen of Microsoft leaks Mary Jo Foley has caught word from some unnamed contacts that the next major update to the Windows family is codenamed 'Threshold.' That name comes from an internal email from EVP Terry Myerson. The codename reportedly covers updates to Windows, Windows Phone and the Xbox One operating system, bringing even more commonality to the three OSes. The Threshold is title more than just a big abstraction -- it's actually borrowed from the original Halo game, following the Cortana codename the company adopted for its forthcoming personal assistant offering.

Among the shared, cross-OS features are single, unified app store and tool sets designed to further entice developers to create applications for all three. Naturally, none of the higher-ups at Microsoft are confirming the existence of Threshold yet, but Foley's projecting a spring 2015 release for the upgrades.

Oh come on, Microsoft isn't going to block regular Windows applications, that would be suicide. Just like OSX the app store is just supplemental.

They already block certain things from using all the features unless they are officially from the app store.

I don't think they'll ever go as far as not letting them run, but I'm already not a fan of locking out fairly simple things.

You forget that this is a company that was willing to alienate at least a third of their userbase to implement Always Online DRM, right? Nothing is too insane/stupid for MS at this point.

A unified app store and language between phone, windows and xbox is only a good thing. And that is the ONLY thing that this leak appears to discuss. The fact that there are so many people in this thread claiming this is a bad thing....well it's weird.

I don't see how a unified OS is needed for running a virtualized language that MS has invented over and over and over again. All a unified OS does is give us needless consumer oriented bullshit onto an OS that I only use for games and work. Yes, and probably ads as well.

So, I guess Windows 7 will be the last Microsoft operating system I will ever own then.

The walled garden nonsense is why I have avoided macs for so long.

I don't know where to go from here...some sort of Linux...Ubuntu, perhaps?

It's not a bad thing, this is one of the biggest breaking points for Windows developers and why the Windows ecosystem is not getting better. You need two apps where you can have one.

Also walled garden is the biggest myth. Not only is desktop still alive, but web is too and they will continue to be. Then again these are likely the same people who will only buy something if it has a Steam key.

Nice tag!

Nope.

Closing down the Windows app store would be a good thing.

Pretty damn awesome. My Windows Phone and computers are already in sync across the globe and it's totally great.

For the haters, Windows XP is where it's at.

I started dual booting Windows 7 with Ubuntu recently, it's pretty rad.

If you just want to browse the web it's way faster to boot up into. Chrome Sync and Dropbox between them mean no issues having your stuff on both systems. Plus, there's workspaces and Wobbly Windows.

so when can xbox and PCs play games together?

I always wanted to run shitty phone apps on my i7 computer and I really don't know what to buy unless MS can push me ads.

Being a WP7 user it sure was fun when Microsoft changed the base once again and started over. I imagine RT is next to go down the toilet after being merged with Windows Phone which in turn probably kills WP8. When do you jump in and not feel like your going to get dropped in their pursuit of one Windows across all devices, Windows Phone 9, Windows 9 or 10 because it sure isn't right now or in the near future?

About damn time. Really can't come quickly enough. Absolutely no need for separate stores for Desktop/Phone/Tablet/Console any more.

a big shitty walled garden aka "app store"

go out and play on the desktop then jesus. how else can they deliver cross platform stuff without having unification via something like an appstore?

everything has an appstore these days. decrying microsoft for it is just absurd, they didn't even invent the idea, apple and google have been doing this for years. Do you really think the desktop is going to disappear?

Windows 7 for the foreseeable future it is then.

After my SSD bricked while I was traveling for business, I was "forced" to upgrade to 8 because I only had the Win8 .iso with me.

Promptly upgraded to 8.1 and, for the most part, it is not a terribad transition from 7 once you get it configured right.

I wouldn't have done it voluntarily, but my jimmies aren't too rustled by it either.

Just keep the second class administrator and ads off Windows please.

Uh, I don't think this makes any difference to the Windows 8 desktop. It's more of what they're doing anyway to unify the Metro appstore side of things. Which is kind of badly needed.

Hating on MS for having an appstore is kinda bizarre in anycase. I think it might be an old man yelling at clouds type of deal.

Absolutely terrible.

When they go through with this, I'll probably delete my Windows 8.1 partition and install ChromeOS or Ubuntu instead.

GTFO with your ad-nonsense and app wall gardens, MS.
