• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Next year is Metroid's 30th anniversary.

The real Metroid won't be ready but I have a very good feeling that brand new Ridley Adventure I've been trying to will into existence is on its way.

Nintendo..... Please. I need another 2D (even 2.5D) Metroid. Or maybe even a Prime. Please. I'm dying to play a new game in my favorite game series again!!! Do it for the fans!!!!

if I run far enough, I can escape the fact that Prey 2 was killed so wrongfully

Run straight into my arms ;(

What I would give for a new "true" Metroid title.
Come on Ninty, at least acknowledge it in some way, you had a year of Luigi! You recognized Luigi... Where's the love for Samus?

After Federation Force being mysteriously absent from the Nintendo Direct despite being originally announced as an early 2016 game, my hope is that they heard the backlash and are now retooling it into real Metroid Prime game.
I actually like the overall idea of the game. But it is definitely not hitting the high marks I would like it to. Seemed very limited in scope and implementation. I'd feel a loss if it was scrapped for a rushed 3DS MP game.

Metroid ammiversary doesn't mean a shit since next year is Zelda anniversary too, and you know what sells better... as well what is treated better by fans.

I have a feeling that maybe they green lighted a real Metroid game at around the time the FF youtube video got a gazillion dislikes.

Other M killed this franchise, thanks for nothing Sakamoto and Team Ninja.

Retro pls save us!

Actually, every Metroid game starting with Prime 2 is progressively worse than the predecessor. Maybe the series os not that good and just happened to have two critically acclaimed titles (Super Metroid and Metroid Prime) which do not represent the overall quality of the series?

I cringe every time I see this picture as a suggestion for "HD remake". This picture is waaay busy to be a part of an actual game.

I agree. It doesn't look like it'd be good in an actual game. It looks too abstract rather than like a real place. There's no real sense of depth, either.

I have a lot of ideas about how I think a new 2D Metroid could look, but I don't think I'll ever get the opportunity to explore it. XD

...You do realize that Metroid Zero Mission, Fusion, Prime 2, and Prime 3 were all critically acclaimed games, right?

Yes, they were not as universally acclaimed as Metroid Prime, just like every Zelda game released after Ocarina of Time wasn't as acclaimed as Ocarina of Time. That doesn't mean Metroid and Zelda started sucking past those high points.

Even Other M (for God knows what reason) got a decent critical response.

I don't understand the problem with the image, is just a more detailed version of the battle from Super Metroid...

I'd be extatic with Metroid Prime HD remaster with optional dual analog controls. I mean it wouldn't be a Prime 4 or a new 2D Metroid but it will at least be something that actually resembles Metroid (I'm looking at you Federation Force) and honest to goodness good that doesn't betray the franchise or its lead woman (I hate you for that and more, Other M).

There's no series producer for metroid just like we have aonuma for zelda and tezuka/koizumi for mario. So don't expect much in this sense. We don't get a lot of anniversaries from other nintendo franchises apart from these two. And for people saying that metroid is dead, there a new spin-off title coming and the time between super and prime is longer than the time between the last metroid and now;

Rare made three DKC games so why can't Retro make three DKCR games? Especially since they are downright fantastic.

I guess people feel that way due them being the only developer the fan base trust to make a good/great Metroid. Nintendo sure showed they cant with letting Sakamoto take full control over everything and having Team Ninja do the grunt work.

I feel that if Nintendo wants to make a Metroid, it needs to be by the team that is working on Ghost Song or Axiom Verge. Give them a good enough budget, allow a good development cycle (1-3 years), have it be a 2D/2.5D Action/Platformer mirroring the older 2D games, and have the game be true to the roots of the series while doing creative things (like what Axiom Verge and Ghost Song is doing).

But they wouldn't do that and the series is dead. Honestly, the series died with the release of Prime Trilogy for the Wii in 2008, so in many ways, the series has been dead for a good.....seven years. That is a great way to end honestly and a nice break for the series :).

If Nintendo does go back to the series, then I look forward to the next console Metroid title.

Other M doesn't exist and Federation Force is a new IP from Next Level Games, the Metroid IP is just slapped on it to get more copies sold

Which is the best Metroid on 3DS vc? Does the NES original Metroid hold up or is it going to be frustrating without a FAQ/guide? Is the game boy game any good?

Didn't know... I hope Nintendo has something up their sleeve besides Federation Force.
Maybe NLG are working on something Metroid related for Wii U?

Yeah the only reason why DK is hated on now is because we haven't seen a Metroid in a while. Both are amazing franchises, it's just that we all crave another Prime.

It hurts even more if youre a person that bought GBA because of Metroid Fusion and NGC because of Metroid Prime.

After a year with only PSOne i went back to Nintendo just because of this IP.

:(

I will never understand nintendo sometimes. Metroid is a beloved franchise yet they treat it as a form of burden. I will be celebrating metroid via marathon of the franchise.

Because it doesn't sell that well. It has a vocal fanbase, but sales don't match it.

Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii alone sold more than all three Metroid Prime games combined.

Considering Federation Forced looked like the antithesis of what Metroid Prime is, that would take them a long, long time to accomplish.

F-Zero has it worse! It doesn't even get 2 reps in Smash. I mean both of Metroids reps are Samus but still.

Can't say I get the appeal of the series, Metroid games geniunely don't feel fun to play an I've played the "good" ones (Metroid, Super Metroid, Zero Mission). I empathize with fans though. It stinks having a fave series seemingly stuck in limbo -_-

I would very, very strongly disagree with this. The tone is definitely darker and perhaps even overwhelming, but Metroid is still "gamey" as hell and pure fun to play.

Common guys :D! Wii U owners are getting Axiom Verge early next year and that might as well be Metroid in everything but name :)........ It bits :

Except Axiom Verge, unlike Metroid, has mediocre to bad level and enemy design. And the last couple areas and final boss were pretty awful. It was a good effort for a one man team, but in no way did it satiate my thirst for an actual new Metroid game.

Metroid is the only Nintendo franchise I care about, next to Splatoon. I bought my 3DS expecting an awesome 2.5D Metroid with tons of content.

And it never came.

So honestl, I doubt Nintendo will do anything.

And prime 1/3 outsold tropical freeze (so far). It certainly isn't going to outdo metroid by any significant margin.

I'm playing Axiom Verge right now on my PS4. It's a great game, probably not as good as 2D Metroids, but at least it's something. I'm really enjoying it. Give it a chance guys!!

We will have Metroid Prime: Federation Force, isn't that great? =D

Erf, we will certainly see anything special for that anniversary, if I remember well, the 25th anniversary wasn't even mentioned by Nintendo, that shows how much they care about the franchise.

I hope that we will see something more, a new game announced maybe or Metroid Prime: Federatin Force rebooted (isn't it strange that we saw nothing in the Nintendo Direct?) but the big focus will be on The Legend of Zelda, no doubt about that.

Metroid isn't dead. Stop saying that.

I feel like, for the majority of games in the series (even though some of the Retro games, especially the first one, weren't half bad), Nintendo has been chasing something when it comes to Metroid.

With Super Metroid back in 1994, Nintendo wasn't chasing anything. They were leading. They were creating their own niche and their own fans. Those fans remain today.

Trying to chase fanbases of other popular games has never suited Metroid well.

With Dark Souls, FromSoft is a good example of a developer leading with vision and bold design and creating their own audience and their own success. It used to be Nintendo who did that -- Who was that. I hope Nintendo goes back to being that. I don't think they will.

I don't demand a big budget for the game. Make it handheld, lower the budget but don't waste the ip.

I'm wearing nostalgia goggles so don't take my word for it, but I made my friend play Metroid 1 for the first time last year (without a guide) and he had a good time clearing it.

And Tropical Freeze sold less than Metroid Prime. I don't think any franchise that sells over 1 million copies each "doesn't sell well." Shitty games like Other M don't sell well.
