Next year is Metroid's 30th anniversary.

And Tropical Freeze sold less than Metroid Prime. I don't think any franchise that sells over 1 million copies each "doesn't sell well." Shitty games like Other M don't sell well.

I agree but you wouldn't know form IGN's inexplicable review of Other M. Here's their veredict:
Metroid: Other M is a huge step forward for Nintendo, a company that's been reluctant to push story over gameplay. Its certainly possible that what the Other M team did for Metroid could potentially shape the direction of other Nintendo franchises, but for now this is a great first step.

Many of the issues in Metroid: Other M could have been addressed with the inclusion of nunchuck control, so I'm not entirely sold on the idea that single Wii remote control was the best thing for this game. But in the end, this is still an excellent experience with great, intense action and an engaging story that turns one of Nintendo's beloved characters into something more than a kick-ass bounty hunter.

Final score? 8.5

What. The. Actual. FUCK happened there!?

I love Metroid, but do we need something special for every semi-round anniversary for every game series?

That said, despite Wii releases, then Wii U VC release, an upscaled re-release of the Prime games would be very nice. No remastering required, the games already look amazing on Dolphin, and I'd rather they not be tinkered with (ruined) like Wind Waker was.

Do you know what you're comparing?
MP games don't sell enough to match the AAA standards the market wants, especially in this Wii U era.

I'll tell you what we're gonna get, and it's way better than anything Nintendo would have done:

THIS.

Bullshit and I don't subscribe to that notion.

The last console Metroid worth a damn was released in 2007 and the universally acclaimed one was in 2002 in a failing Gamecube and still managed 2 million. A huge feat in that console.

Metroid, in my opinion, needs a sort of an overhaul. Look how (relatively) bad Tomb Raider was doing before they went back to the drawing board to create 2013's Tomb Raider. Franchise revivals can and do happen. And I have faith Metroid has the potential for such a comeback. It's just a matter of Nintendo really trying/giving a damn.

What could reasonably be done for it by Nintendo, or someone else? Will It get a new game on NX, despite there being nothing revealed for any NX game? Will it be forgotten again?

Doubt we'll be getting any announcement. Aside from a federation force release date. Not that most people will care about that.

Sadly. I don't expect much of a celebration in any other way either.
Maybe a metroid sale on the E-shop or something.
It is hard to believe the DS and 3DS never got a traditional 2d Metroid game...

After Federation Force being mysteriously absent from the Nintendo Direct despite being originally announced as an early 2016 game, my hope is that they heard the backlash and are now retooling it into real Metroid Prime game.

I doubt such a big retool will be done... or could be done in a successful way.
Regardless. The fact it was absent this direct pretty much confirms they saw the backlash.
They might have expected some complaining ,but I doubt they expected this type of backlash. They didn't want another trailer with thousands of dislikes

Probably going to retool Blast Ball for online play after the Rocket League success.

Other M was their attempt at a revival. It failed. Massively.

Until they decide to make an internal Metroid game again, it's not happening. They'd rather have dedicated teams for Pikmin and Chibi Robo than Metroid at this point.

Didn't Chibi Robo and DKCF flop?

The fruit of years of labor at Retro will be unveiled at E3. Launching alongside the NX. With beautiful detailed worlds, creatures and flora throughout.

Donkey Kong.

In all seriousness I am expecting Retros next title to be a launch title with the NX. It will be a Metroid Prime game.

Federation Force port.

It's stupid how much the sorry state of the Metroid series affects me emotionally as a grown man. It's just fucking videogames, after all. Yet I see those pics in the OP, remember Other M, remember Federation Force, remember that 'Zero Suit Samus' is what most people think of when they think of her these days, and... my heart just sinks. It really does.

Compare the Wii U's install base to that of the Wii. It's a pretty similar ratio if you compare MK8 to MK Wii or NSMB U to NSMB Wii. Tropical Freeze's sales were more the result of the Wii U situation rather than the game itself.

And shitty games actually do sell well. And not only shitty games, but broken, buggy games do as well. Look no further than the Assassin's Creed series, or any Bethesda game. At least Other M was competently engineered.

?? Metroid Prime debuted on the Gamecube. Why would you compare the Wii U install base to the Wii...

OK. Well. I feel old as fuck now, thx.

I remember playing it as a youngster, Nintendo Power magazine at my side to help me navigate the labyrinth. Multiple sheets of paper with save codes hastily scribbled everywhere...

I want you to imagine what happened before that second image in the OP. Imagine samus stepping up on a chair to put up those streamers one by one, in a silent house. going to the store to buy a whole pack of party hats (knowing she'll only use one).

Making that fucking cupcak- *sobs*

Seriously, fuck you. Just... urgh.

Have you ever been to a party where more than half the guests cried off, and you want to too, but you can't because it's half empty and you feel bad, and everyone's just pretending like they're having fun, but the host KNOWS, he clearly knows but he has to play along with the charade, and there's way too much beer and food and everyone notices and it's the optimism that the host had that kills you because he really wanted this to work, but it won't, and it can't and eventually things just peter out in embarassing excuses to leave and urghhhhh

oh god the nightmares

Looking at that image feels like that. *sobs* is right

What is taking them so damn long on Metroid: Zero Mission in NA?

And how the hell have we not seen a follow-up since 2004? 2D Metroid never failed like 3D did. It could easily be developed specifically for the niche fanbase.

lol Metroid federation force is the Anniversary I've been waiting for :D

On a more serious note, those pics in OP made me sad 4 years ago and they still do :(

I still dream of this:

-2D Super Metroid remake using Ubiart engine for portables + home console HD made by Nintendo RyD

-Metroid prime trilogy remaster a lá Wind Waker HD by Hexadrive.

-And the announce of Metroid Dread.

-Having a release date of figma Zero Suit Samus

Probably just the last one will actually happen.

To be... totally fair, Other M is actually really easy to enjoy provided you don't actually think about it. Goodness knows I enjoyed it my first time through - it's flashy, snappy, and it especially likes to shove nostalgia in your face every three seconds to make you not think too hard about all of its flaws. It's only when you start thinking about the game, and especially it's utterly horrific story, that it starts to fall apart.

Maybe if we're lucky we'll get some kind of anniversary amiibo for next year? Honestly I would appreciate that even if we don't get a proper new game - I would kill for a Samus amiibo with her Metroid Prime model, or (dare I suggest it) a Ridley amiibo. Even though it would probably have to be a Mega Yarn Yoshi-sized model.

And that's what I get for posting in a hurry! My bad. The post I quoted was quoting another post regarding DKCR outselling all the three games combined, which it did even without the help of the 3DS version. So my point is that it's not surprising they made another DKC game given how well Returns was received by critics and fans alike. Tropical Freeze began development nearly two years before the Wii U was released, so Nintendo could not have forseen the Wii U disaster. Tropical Freeze, which is hovering around the 1m mark, has sold as well as Returns relative to the install base.

That being said, I don't agree with the whole "Metroid doesn't sell well" theory. On average, each Metroid game sells over 1m copies. And not only that, it is good to make to satisfy their core fans that have stuck with them, and also for prestige... The series is nearly as critically regarded as mainline Mario and Zelda titles.

That was one bug, and was fixed in a timely manner after launch.

Other M is not a good Metroid game, but it does have some things going for it that the haters absolutely refuse to ignore. It isn't an unenjoyable game. Much worse games have received 8.5 plus from IGN before.

The next Metroid is needing of a long time in the oven. The return of the franchise needs to be of Super Mario Galaxy caliber. Hopefully, it's not first person. I want to be able to see Samus.

A 3rd person Metroid game with Splatoon controls would work very well IMO.

I lost it at: "Don't worry... We can always play Super Metroid."

But it's sad that this will go by without a single thing from Nintendo like five years ago. At least the Virtual Console has Fusion, the Prime Trilogy and of course Zero Mission...

Sorry US brethren :(

If nintendo tries to celebrate the 30th Year anniversary with that federation 3DS game, i'm going to be really disappointed.

Then again, we didn't even get anything when Metroid celebrated 25 years.

I suspect Federation Force will be pretty different from what was shown at E3, given its absence since.

We might get a fanservice game, like Metroid Warriors developed by Koei Tecmo. Maybe they will pull a Linkle on us and let us play as a girl Metroid.

Nintendo next year:
"Happy Birthday Samus!

Your an old Girl now, so we'll send the federation force out, because you seem that you can't handle the bounty hunting anymore.
Enjoy your retirement!"

A Metroid II remake on 3DS would have made me so happy.

That would be so awesome, the only one I haven't finished yet.
What a big sprite, for such a small screen!

Other M killed this franchise, thanks for nothing Sakamoto and Team Ninja.

Retro pls save us!

Nintendo killed the franchise, especially when they canceled the Metroid for 3ds because "it doesn't respect our quality standards".
And now we should enjoy this "dodge ball X false-Metroid" presented last E3, right?
Enjoy.
