NextBox Negativity starts infiltrating mainstream press

That disgusted me. I felt insulted. You're better off not giving me anything then. That's 0.25$. Have you ever given someone a quarter for their birthday ? No, because you'd expect them to feel insulted. Even worse, that quarter has to be spent on their store, so it's not even 0.25$ worth to them. It's like they've been trying to make it obvious PS+ is the better deal.

I'm not a PS+ member. Do they offer something better on Birthdays?

I'm starting to think 1 of 2 things:

a) The NextXBox is infact delayed and MS as nothing to show yet
b) Microsoft has some kind of atomic bomb to drop, like EA exclusivity, or COD exclusivity or something along that lines

Or they are changing stuff in response to Sony's announcements....

Hummm...

most times, common sense wins the console race.

hardly matters if people are getting anxious, because so far nothing is official.

and like it or not, each passing day a new smartphone consummer is made, one that won't really mind the "always-on" unless he's savvy or likes reading the little lines.

So far I'm happy, because I can already tell that if 720 is a turd, PS4 is more than good enough for the humble gamer I am.

So people are angry that the next Xbox will supposedly not support 360 games, yet its already been confirmed that the PS4 will not have hardware BC, but instead have you stream old games to play them. Guess what streaming requires? A constant internet connection.

Meh, backwards compatibility is not important for me.

PS4 already went through the no BC outrage, most people are over it by now.

Also you seem to be confusing a mandatory always online connection for the entire system versus an online connection to play PS3 games through BC. The latter is no different than using your internet to play COD or some other multiplayer game online. That's like saying "you need a constant connection to play COD!!!" It's not the same thing.

It's an "Oh well at least it does this..." sort of thing. People would perhaps be able to stomach the supposed "always online" nonsense a little better if they could play their 360 back catalogue, and as you say it would be one point over the PS4.

Well yeah but...shit listen Sony has a good vibe going here don't ruin it man. LOL

Or... you know... play your PS3/360 games... on your PS/360... without the need for any always-online connection..?

Can you really not recognize the difference between an optional feature and something that would render the entire system completely useless?

Yeah even that toilet paper they distribute in the Viennese U-Bahn had a small blurp on it. Rather collected and balanced... I was like what the fuck? No Drama? No hyperbole?

Ha! Imp, we used to visit the same OPM Benelux forum. The world's a small place indeed.

What newspapers are these from?

EDIT: Not clicking the links is stupid.

We sure did...
After the shit hit the fan and the whole tno thing took place, I migrated to greener pastures.

I'm still amazed how much drama that forum produced.

I like Sony/PS way more than MS/Xbox, but what the hell. We have no real information at all about Nextbox. The only thing we have are rumors. I'm not forming an opinion about it until I see some facts.

Or they're just sticking to their original timeframe and announcing right before E3 like we all expected.

Are they changing things ....sticking to their original plan? Something tells me its a mix of both. Time tables probably are being kept in line with what they originally wanted but I think most certainly their message has been changed up a bit in light of what Sony announced and some of the negative feed back.

I will say that box better be something really special at this point cause with all the negative spin right now they need to knock their announcement out of the park.

It would be foolish not to adjust messaging when you have the advantage of knowing most of the competition's plans. But it's too late to change specs and Sony didn't announce any earth-shattering features that absolutely need to be copied. A suspend feature is a no-brainer when you have adequate memory, and there have been rumblings of a Microsoft-Twitch.tv partnership dating back before this year. Certainly lots of people will interpret these as copied features when Microsoft unveils them, but they just as likely could have already been in the works. Sony will just get the credit because they announced first.

Correct. But OP (It's just a reader, not someone of the editors btw) didn't mention that the second article knows that Francis is just a Youtube character that's trying to make a point on a very typical way. Now a lot of people are probably thinking that the writer doesn't know who he is. This article just sums up a couple of rumors and then also show this 'joke' video of Francis. That's all there is too read and see. :)

Come on, the tone of both articles is rather negative.

THe second article starts with
Recent rumours about the next Xbox console anger some gamers. There's talk about a mandatory online connection to be able to play and that doesn't sit well with everyone

Then it nuances a bit that Sony may have similar plans, but that they haven't really talked about it and have stated that they will leave it up to the publishers themselves. the article continues to state that sony scored with their ps4 reveal.

In the third paragraph the article focusses on the xbox, stating that not much is known, but that most rumours paint a grimm picture.

Last paragraph states that Francis is a youtube-personality and uses this act to protest some remarks made by ms employees on twitter (with link to the Orthy/Manveer Heir stuff).

You can't tell me this article doesn't make Sony look good and MS bad...
I've never insinuated that the writer doesn't know the character.
I've just stated that main-press started to pick up on the negative buzz, and that's something I didn't really expected.
MS needs to act.

May 21st is the date on which the Verg and the New York Times expect the Xbox reveal to happen. (end of the first article)

Funny thing is, this will all turn out to be a rumour that MS floated out without having any intention of doing it so that when they DON'T do always-on, they'll get great press for not doing anything.

No bc doesn't make any sense. One of the main reasons to buy a 720 was to upgrade my 360 but if it cant play 360 games then there's no point in upgrading.

Hehehe, ironically, we do actually have more rumours and 'evidence' that forced-online is real than we do that there are actually games for it! ;-)

Sounds legit. There was that Microsoft guy on Twitter defending the idea of not releasing games for it.

Your argument makes no sense, streaming makes online 100% mandatory for ALL games played through that method, not the cherry picking of MP games you are highlighting.

This is not in defense of any MS if these rumors are true but you really go out way in these MS threads, at least make your argument valid.

It hasn't even been a week and I'm already burnt out on this. This story is already 3 pages deep in the RSS feed on most mainstream websites. This will mean absolutely nothing after Microsoft announces. The next time the mainstream media talks about the Nextbox, the headline will read "Microsoft dazzles with Kinect 2 and Skype integration for the new Xbox" or simply "Microsoft announces new Xbox".

I think it's great that this is receiving a lot of attention. However, for some reason I still have this lingering feeling that it won't be like we assume. At least I hope online isn't a requirement and after all the negative reactions, hopefully they realize it's the wrong way to go.

When I was at pax the devs at Undeadlab were talking to some press guy and stated they were sure that BC was in so their games would work on the next xbox. I am taking these rumors of NO BC with a grain of salt until MS states otherwise at their event or at E3.

Is it having an effect on the core gamers right now? Sure, how could it not.

Can Microsoft fix all of this if they have the goods (and most of these rumors are false)? Hell yes.

I just don't see how all of these multi-sourced rumors are false, unless MS has been leaking false info to make themselves look better in the end.

Yep. Guaranteed. People love juicy negativity and trash talking, but when they actually show the thing I'm pretty sure it'll borderline reverse all the bad vibes. The new car smell, new games, etc.

MS knows how to make noise when they announce things, just remember these are all still rumors, yes they are more than likely to be true, but if some of them aren't or other things are said that are what people want then they weigh each other out. MS is more than likely to have very similar features to Sony's like the whole streaming BC thing.

but how many of Sony's features are going to be a launch that they showed off, this is the one problem i have with Sony they announced so many things and they said these will all be coming in time basically

Sony are masters at selling "Potential". I will give them that.

I'm going with (B) They have no doubt opened up their chequebook for something. Doubt it would be for full exclusivity. Though a new exclusive game from a big studio would be something.

They'll also probably be ready to push a their own new I.P.

If I had to guess, maybe scalable virtual ram (I.E - Fast boot from flash/thumbdrive to be used as virtual RAM)

Keep up, it's quite simple. You need an online connection to play PS3 games on PS4 (when Gaikai makes the feature available) but you don't NEED to play PS3 games. There's no system level online requirement, meaning you can play PS4 games with your internet off. The always on talk for the next xbox was making it require online, or else nothing would work. Not even game playing.

Microsoft clearly decided to do a few "controlled leaks" today (see VGLeaks and Verge) to help paint some positive press for Durango.

Good PR move by Microsoft.
