How is it unreasonable? I gave you an example of Google Now with JB. If I had a tablet that didn't get updates to it, I would be missing out on a tentpole feature of android right now.

You don't know and can't predict what the next tentpole feature will be, so it's silly to say you won't need it.

Why would I need the feature if my tablet functions perfectly fine without it? Also, I think you're confusing "need" with "want."

Regardless, whatever the next "tentpole feature" will be, it's highly unlikely that it will be confined to the Android OS alone. You keep pointing to Google Now as if it was revolutionary, when in reality, many of the revolutionary "features" we see in the mobile space are from third parties, such as Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, etc.

Android OS updates were crucial in the early days when the system was unrefined. But it has evolved. Substantial updates are no longer necessary, at least not for the current hardware.

Im not sure what your definition of frequent is then. In the last 3 months theres 5+ threads with multiple mentions in each.

At the very least you are being extremely misleading. The Nooks and Kindles get very frequent mention in any tablet thread when someone is looking for advice on what to buy at a low price point. If you are claiming otherwise, you would need to actually show me, sorry.

It's disproportionate. I don't know if this counts considering it's mine and bias and all that but: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=619461

Compare that with say, this thread. It's already clear by volume that it's not representative of actual ownership either but rather this sort of audience is attracted to specific things and more vocal. You'll get 5+ people going for a $200 Nexus 7 for every one person representing an $80 Nook in a thread about cheap tablets which is kinda crazy to me.

Hey look, if YOU don't think it's an important feature to you then feel free to ignore it. But lots of people like really like it. And yeah after using it, it's fallen into the "needs" category for me. You're weird extrapolation of your own preferences onto everyone is just dumbfounding to me. OSes progress and get better over time, more efficient, nicer looking, better features. To lock yourself out of that is ridiculous to me.

Android updates have always had crucial updates. Every update so far has set the precedence for this. This does not mean that this trend will necessarily continue, but you have no evidence that it will not.

Ehhhhh, pot meet kettle?

My original point was always that there's a price tag associated with this feature of first updates. Everyone has to weigh that for themselves. I just don't understand why people are weighing that so heavily in the Nexus' favor, considering some of the significant cons that are also associated with the unit (namely price and lack of microSD expansion). It seems like getting updates first is more important to some people than any other feature of a tablet, no matter the cost. I find that strange.

Except I've never presumed to speak for everyone in any way. You were the one that said people who wanted updates were "unreasonable and based purely on fear" which only makes sense if you assume everyone wants what you want. I'm just defending people's choice in preferring updates. You also have to realize that a lot of people like me live outside the US where you can't even buy the Nook.

Thank Android 4.2 for that. It really begs for 2 gigs of memory.

Made my Galaxy Nexus slow significantly slower.
yeah in terms of performance 4.1.2 was definitely the best.

That's kinda Google's MO though. Completely break something, and then slowly fix it until it's about 60-70% of how it used to be.

That Forever Gone SD cleaner app did wonders for my Nexus 7's sluggishness. Using it every couple of weeks seems like enough to make it remain my defacto 7" tablet for the foreseeable future. I'm more curious to see how the 10" Nexus line pans out over the next few months, a larger tablet could be useful for home use away from the main PC.

Yeah, I'm thinking I should flash mine back to 4.1.2. From what I've read, the thing never had great write speeds, but it seems to be paging to/from RAM a lot more than it used to. If I try to run anything more demanding than Twitter it just chokes when trying to switch apps.

Would be absolutely crazy if this thing has 4gb ram but there is no way in hell.

It might need it for streaming purposes? There were rumors of a streaming stick not too long ago. They also might want this version to be more of a gaming device than just an e-reader. Google is trying to make gaming a focal point for Android.

Now I'm curious to see what gpu this thing is going to have.

It's a Snapdragon S4 (APQ8064) so it's using an Adreno 320. It's not the highest end, probably close to what the Tegra 3 was last year. Also points to 4GB likely being untrue. 2GB is much more likely.

Why is "Nexus" sideways? Who would ever hold their N7 like that?

Not only do people obviously use tablets in landscape mode (that's one of the great benefits of tablets/phones over regular computers), but vertical text is also valid stylistic design. Just look at the Pacific Rim jaegar posters.
