From an interview with Nintendo France:

Chrome translation courtesty Amneisac:

Wii U had suffered the past a lack of games a year, with widely spaced outlets. The beginning of the year 2014 was also quiet, what will happen after the release of Mario Kart 8? Many games release will be formalized at the show at E3, but you already know that we out action game Bayonnetta 2. By the end of the year, there will also be the new Skylanders, the new Disney Infinity, Sonic Boom, Watch Dogs or Zelda Hyrule Warriors. And on the output side of games produced by Nintendo, there will obviously be the fighting game Super Smash Bros.. E3 is also an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology [used in Skylanders and Disney Infinity, allowing the use of real objects - here, figurines - in video games] in Nintendo consoles . The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros.

My French is a bit rusty, but it says NFC will be used for SSB for Wii U. So, there we have it. Any additional translation would be great.

Thanks to Jubern and Jackano.

Final Smash this thread if old.

I can see it as the NFC figurine storing specific data/settings for your controls/unlocks. Could be a huge help for the competitive scene.

Not liking this idea completely. I hope they don't do it for the 3DS version, but I still don't want to miss any significant content like characters.

But Sakurai said both versions of the game would have the same characters.Nothing to worry about.

...right?

Somebody at Nintendo France is getting fired. I don't think Nintendo wanted that info out now.

Now the delay between 3ds and Wii U version makes sense. I'm not that interested in figurines, but let's see how will Nintendo play.

New characters make perfect sense for this. This also gives a clear differentiation between the 3DS and Wii U.

And, yes, my guess is that Nintendo was waiting for E3 for this news.

At least they have plan to make the NFC figurines compatible with multiple games. Bye bye moneys.

... no? Nobody? Okay, then, here goes...

It'll be interesting how they'll put this into use. An NFC figure exclusive game-mode? Sticker effects in that mode, like Subspace? Or... gasp... costumes? I think we can pretty much discount character unlocks.

Bet you that it will be AR/NFC cards that can be used on both the 3DS and Wii U. Though I would love to be wrong and straight up buy the figures, even if it means my wallet hating me.
