NFL Week 4 2010|OT| - Revenge vs Redemption

I normally just make my picks in the pick em, but I'm bored, while at work of course, so here goes:

NYJ @ BUF - Bills don't stand a chance, then again, this would be a game that last year's Jets would blow.
BAL @ PIT - Flacco on his backo.
CIN @ CLE - My upset pick...why? Because I hate the Bungles.
DEN @ TEN - The Tits and their usual game of dirty pool will have McDaniels jumping all over the sideline.
CAR @ NO - Sorry Clausen, you're gonna get crunched.
DET @ GB - Even with 32 penalties, the Pack still win this one.
SEA @ STL - Straight up pick em, that, and special teams can't win you a game every week.
SF @ ATL - Dag gum Falcon commercials!
HOU @ OAK - It's in Zombieville, so that could hurt, but not much.
IND @ JAC - Jags used to always play the Colts tough, but not this version of the Jags.
WAS @ PHI - Tough one, because I want McRibb to steamroll the Eagles. But the rest of the Redskins team probably won't let him.
ARI @ SD - Chargers still suck early in the season, but the Cards suck more.

SNF
CHI @ NYG - Will probably be a close game if the Giants keep their cool long enough to accept all the gaffes Cutler will give them. But I'm guessing they won't.

MNF
NE @ MIA - It's in Miami...and I just can't bring myself to pick Brady Gaga.

I HATE YUO

Also, another week, another divisional opponent for the Jets to prepare for. After knocking off the evil Cheatriots and hated Dolphins on consecutive weeks, the Jets are on top of the AFC East - the way it's supposed to be. The defense is holding, though without its three best players (Revis, Jenkins, Pace) it is struggling to lock people down like normal. Every week the Jets can win allows them time to knit though - so the cavalry will soon be on its way. Now, picks:

NYJ @ BUF: It's Buffalo. Expect Shonn Greene and LT to run over, around and through these guys since the Jets are going to treat this like a hugely important game and avoid the trap. Good old ground-and-pound football!
BAL @ PIT: Steelers defense is terrifying. Even Baltimore can't fuck with it.
CIN @ CLE: Carson Palmer continues to masquerade as a good QB, which is easy when the opponent is the Browns.
DEN @ TEN: When will we see Tebow? BRING ME TEBOW
CAR @ NO: Saints got smacked in the mouth; I'd expect they won't take that lightly.
DET @ GB: Green Bay also got smacked in the mouth, and I don't expect they'll take that lightly either.
SEA @ STL: So, precisely how back is Neon Leon? He'll probably bring one back to the house this week too. Watch.
SF @ ATL: Niners are just fucked this year. When do we get to break them up and liberate their good players?
HOU @ OAK: No, Bruce Gradkowski isn't good enough to beat the Texans and survive their D. He still looks pretty cool, though.
IND @ JAC: The all MJD offense will be amusing to GODPEYTON for a brief moment; then, he will smite the Jags with his holy arm.
WAS @ PHI: Nobody can stop Neo Michael Vick right now. Honestly, nobody really could before either, but now he may have developed...pocket presence? This will be an awesome game, though.
ARI @ SD: Ehh, the Chargers aren't as bad as their early record may suggest. They'll even up here.

SNF
CHI @ NYG: Desperation Giants win a desperation game on some quality defensive play. Also, the receivers may actually catch a pass or two!

MNF
NE @ MIA: Unfortunately, both teams dying in a mid-air collision of team planes isn't a valid pick. Also, I can't imagine NE going gracefully into the night, especially after watching how Miami allowed Mark Sanchez to strafe them in the air. Tom Brady will abuse them with Welker and Moss.

Speaking of the Sanchize, isn't it nice to watch him become a man in front of your eyes? Remember how he was a boss in all those late season and post-season games last year? He's still doing it, btw...and that's because he is smarter in how he utilizes his weapons in the offense. That offense will get Santonio Holmes after this week, too. The full and healthy Jets are going to be some crazy shit to watch; prepare for a lot of Dougie dances in your favorite team's endzone shortly.

J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS.

I didn't even realize this before now. We have the #1 offense and the #4 defense, and we're 1-2? Fuck our ST.

Seriously. We should just trade Vincent Jackson for Kassim Osgood.

Week 4

NYJ @ BUF This is not hate but a I have a hunch pick.
BAL @ PIT Mirror image teams but one of these has their starting QB.
CIN @ CLE
DEN @ TEN
CAR @ NO
DET @ GB Poor Detroit, Green Bay might be playing angry.
SEA @ STL I think they can win the winnable games
SF @ ATL I'm worried about a sub 5 win season for the 9ers.
HOU @ OAK
IND @ JAC
WAS @ PHI Vick is a phoenix :D
ARI @ SD Come on already Bolts

SNF
CHI @ NYG The Giants look undisciplined

MNF
NE @ MIA Tough pick but I have to go with my boys. This games will set the tone for the season. Almost, almost a must win.

As a Jets fan I'd be more worried about the Buffalo game if it was in November/December. I mean it does have all the feelings of a potential trap game, but I think it's going to be a smooth win.

Mario Manningham was added to the injury list for the Giants with a concussion suffered in the Titans game.

The concussion must have happened either very late in Sunday's loss or wasn't detected until after the game. His status for Week 4 will depend on the severity, so we'll be looking for details out of the Giants later today. If Manningham can't go, camp darling Victor Cruz would be in line for No. 3 receiver duties.

It says something about Barden's inability to play ST when he can't beat out Cruz on the depth chart.

Also not too shocking..

Coughlin says he'll tell Dodge to kick out of bounds with Hester on the field. Said they'll work on directional punting this wk.
Whether Dodge actually accomplishes this task is another issue all together.

Yeah NFLN makes ESPN irrelevant for football stuff. Thank God it is free.
I think you'd like showtime's inside the nfl. They have clips from every game with the nfl films narrator and music, so every game sounds super dramatic. Tons of sideline clips, so you can hear what the coaches and players were saying and doing before/after big plays. At the beginning of the show they usually highlight a player who had a biff game and just show you all their catches/plays. They also have cris collinsoworth, simms, sapp, and an analyst. Love it.

I'm confused on how the Pats are favored in Miami when they look like the weaker team so far and historically they suck big fat donkey nuts playing in Miami.

I loved watching it back when it was on HBO. Used to watch that shit back in the late 80s even. Now I don't have either HBO or Showtime.

NFL Net is ok, but they still have some guys I can't stand, namely Jamie Dukes, what a putz. And I have no idea why they stuck Irvin in with Mooch and Deion. I loved the dynamic they had going and now Irvin's marble mouth just fucks it all up.

Hey Steelers-Age. I was talking about my boy Charlie Batch the other day, and have resumed my research on him today. I was trying to tell my friend that the guy is pushing 40 (which he is... he's 36!) and found some awesome info. I think any football fan will enjoy some of this.

First of all, proof that Batch has touched more greatness than any two players on the Steelers roster:

And now, for a sad, sad tale from the depths of Wikipedia.
Charlie Batch was the Detroit Lions' starter through better parts of the 1998–2001 seasons. After the surprising retirement of Barry Sanders in 1999, Detroit struggled to find consistency in its running game and Batch was asked to assume a "hybrid" quarterback role and assist in the Lions' running game by using various QB sweeps, bootlegs, and QB draws in an attempt to keep defenders off balance. He proved to be effective, but injury prone, in his years with Detroit. His best year was clearly 1999, the year Sanders retired, as he helped rally Detroit to a surprising wildcard playoff game against the Washington Redskins. Batch did not play in the game, giving way to Gus Frerotte due to injury, and Detroit lost 27–13.

The 2000 season proved to be Batch's last as a legitimate NFL starter. He was again injured (leaving the Week 17 matchup against Chicago with a shoulder injury) in a pivotal game in which Detroit lost on a last-second field goal by Paul Edinger. The game cost the Lions a playoff berth and sent into motion a radical turn of events in the Lions' front office, resulting in the hiring of Fox Sports color commentator Matt Millen as the new CEO and general manager. Millen's arrival ultimately resulted in an extreme makeover in Detroit's roster, and Batch became one of the more visible casualties.

He started the 2001 season as Detroit's starter under new Head Coach Marty Mornhinweg, but was injured again late in 2001, and eventually released by the Lions that offseason for salary cap reasons. Batch had been deemed expendable due in part to the team's drafting of Joey Harrington with their first-round pick, and Millen had gone on record in his desire to find a starting quarterback other than Batch earlier that year. Still, Batch passed for over 9,000 yards with Detroit, reaching sixth on the Lions' all-time list.

So that last line is wrong. Batch isn't 6th, he's 8th. Seriously. Charlie Batch is the 8th best Lions all time leading passer with 9000 yards :lol. Dude played like maybe 30 games in three years for us.

DETROIT LIONS ALL TIME PASSER NUMBERS
1. Bobby Layne - 15,710
2. Scott Mitchel - 12, 647
3. Greg Landry - 12,451
4. Gary Danielson - 11,885
5. Eric Hipple - 10,771
6. Joey Harrington - 10,242
7. Jon Kitna - 9034
8. Charlie Batch - 9016

Wanna talk about your team having an awful history with QBs? :lol

I'm guessing Harrington and Kitna passed him after that wiki entry was written. And 36 is not quite "pushing 40."

When your body is as old and battered as his is, he's really pushing 45.

Yeah, it's really having the #1 offense and #4 defense that bothers me. The only thing Norv did "wrong" was tell Kassim Osgood what he saw his role to be. AJ, on the other hand, is a completely different matter.

Well, the two games we lost, we lost because of special teams. Seattle arguably also because of turnovers.

It's not special teams. It's ONE SINGLE ASPECT of special teams. To put it plainly, had the Chargers just kicked off and punted every ball out of bounds, they'd be 3-0.

The Chargers have the #1 rated offense in the league with almost no running game.

What happened to your running game? Are they on vacation or something? Taking in a show on Broadway?

The Chargers are averaging 116 yards a game, 12th in the league. No running game?

Oh, I was quoting what Tf53 had quoted from GQman2121. Didn't bother to check it. Figured SD fans would know.

Hey, Chaz doesn't even turn 36 till December. As a 37 year old, I detest any allegations of pushing 40 at anything other than 39!

But yeah, Chaz has had injury issues his whole career. And considering he's been only a backup in the Burgh, he's been even more brittle. Which is why it could be argued that Tomlin made the right choice when he had him listed 4th on the depth chart. And it's also why it's crazy that both Lefty and Dixon went down without much playing time themselves.

Chaz is a good dude though, great person on and off the field. He's not upper level talent, but he can get the job done if he's got talent around him. He only needs to hang in there for one more game. He deserves to go out with some success on the field if this is his last year.

isnt that nice, Big Ben and Ray Ray are texting buddies.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger won't see Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis when Baltimore visits Pittsburgh on Sunday, as Roethlisberger will be serving the final game of his four-game suspension. But Roethlisberger and Lewis have had plenty of contact already this year.

Lewis says he's been keeping in regular contact with Roethlisberger.

"He texted me last night and things like that,'' Lewis said, per Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It's a respect we have for each other, but more importantly it's a respect you got to have for yourself."

Lewis can relate to a fellow player trying to bounce back and have a big season after a troubled offseason. In 2000 Lewis went from being arrested and charged with murder, to pleading guilty to obstruction of justice, to winning the defensive player of the year award. Lewis said he hopes Roethlisberger can have a similar comeback.

"We texted each other whenever he was going through what he was going through, I was there for him," Lewis said. "It's more of a brotherhood. The game always takes care of itself on the field, but off the field if we don't look out for each other nobody else will."
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/09/29/ben-roethlisberger-ray-lewis-are-texting-buddies/

Hate to burst chargers fans bubbles, but 1st and 4th on offense and defense is pretty fucking meaningless. You've played the Seahawks, the Chiefs and the Jaguars. The defense is fourth because special teams lets the other team score before the offense can even come out. Yet another reason why yards as offensive/defensive barometer are pretty meaningless, especially this yearly in the year.

Fuck the Raiders.

Since the game sold out apparently (first time in recent history...) and it's at 1:00 in Oaktown, we don't get the Philly/Redskins game. Assholes.

That's pretty standard for all markets. If the home teams sells out, if another game is on at the same time on another channel it will not show. Drives me insane living in Seattle when say CBS has the the double-header that day and Fox is only showing the late game (Seahawks)....I end up getting 1 morning game and 1 afternoon game since the CBS late game wont show due to local sellout rules.

oh so if I get a game opposite my local market team's game it's because they're on the road? I see.

PS: Deathbyvolcano: don't kid yourself about the Steelers being an underdog in any way, shape or form at home and with that D. :P Don't try to be the new Giants with the "NO ONE RESPEKS US" schtick.

I do think Baltimore should be favored for this game specifically. They match up relatively nicely against our current situation. We're likely not going to be able to run on them, so it's going to be up to Batch and the Steeler's defense to create turnovers/points. If Ben was in the lineup, then I'd have no issue saying that the Steelers are the favorites.

But then again, the Ravens have Flacco, and that in itself may make us the favorites.

Been a pretty depressing year for us. St Louis has looked pretty decent lately, and I'm honestly wondering if they'll beat the Lions after the bye; before the season I thought that was a given win.

you thought the lions were a lock to beat anybody? thats pretty retarded man. as horrible as the rams were last year, we STILL beat you guys for our only win.

im not making any predictions this week....but i HOPE to see josh brown kick a game winning, 54 yard FG to end this losing streak :D

Steelers can't run against, but they can't run against the Steelers either. At worst, this game is a push. Trying to paint the Steelers as underdogs is overdoing it. Steelers have the better defense. They both have shitty secondaries, but the Steelers have Troy and Ed Reed is still out. The only advantage for the Ravens is the better offensive line, but Flacco sucks against good defenses.

Correct -- if the local team is on the road, those local market rules go out the window and you should get the game opposite your local team on the other channel.

If we get Staff back before we play you guys, we win.

If not... we lose. Pretty cut and dry imo.

I still think the Lions can eke out maybe 3 wins this year. Maybe.

I think we can get St Louis, Buffalo, and I'm assuming that by Week 17 when we play Minnesota, they'll be far out of playoff contention and Favre will have made sure that he's not playing football anymore. The Lions D-Line fucked him up pretty hard on Sunday and you know he's not gonna wanna do that one more time with nothing on the line.
