he launched helmet to helmet into a defenseless receiver. textbook.
"Defenseless"? No.

Lead with helmet. Yep.
Dumb. Probably.

He's playing football. These things will happen occasionally no matter how hard you try.

I don't know how he couldn't of stopped running full speed.

I applaud Colinsworth for questioning the league instead of unilaterally excusing everything they do like Phil Sims was doing earlier. I don't necessarily agree, but it's better than being an idiot.

EDIT - Thanks for bringing up Lawrence Philps, Al....

I don't understand this defenselessness shit, its football. you can't fire up some neon lights that say 'okay, you can hit now!'

dude aimed for his back, roy was falling backwards, this is football - shit happens

when guys are in midair with their limbs flailing they can't brace themselves for a hit like they would if they had their feet on the ground. I don't think Collins was headhunting either but bad shit happens when you lead with your head like that. Stupid move.

Come on, this isn't rocket science. If this was so impossible to prevent from happening, then there would be fines and problems left and right.

Right. I don't know why more DBs don't go for a Ronnie Lott style face-crunching chest bump.

yes, you can. when someone can't brace their body for a hit, they are defenseless. it's not actually that difficult to determine most of the time. unless you insist that football continue to include brain damaging concussions.

Ok, let's be real a little bit: When Collins went for the tackle, he wasn't aiming for Williams' head. Williams fell going for the ball, so that by the time Collins got there the helmet levels were even.

In the leagues eyes, it doesn't matter. Look what happened with Collie today; he actually lowered his own head and got lite up. The league won't give a fuck. They'll still fine each player, give them each a strike, and keep an eye on them for the rest of the season.

Bracing for a suspension. Totally preventable. He doesnt have a history of those hits though.

Good thing Bigby came back.

Not a chance. If Harrison can get away with it week in and week out, surely Collins can get away with it once. It'd be nice to see McCarthy get some balls and bench him though.

Why couldn't Jarrett Bush have made that illegal hit though? Nick Collins is one of our best players...

Hope it's not a suspension but yeah that seemed so unnecessary (although I don't think he was TRYING to hurt the other guy, at least in that manner)

he did 'kinda' lead with his head, but it wasn't a malicious hit or anything like that. i don't get how people think that helmets aren't supposed to be used when one of the first things kids learn in pop warner is to put your helmet on the ball when you're tackling. then they tell you to lower your pads as an offensive player. the whole culture is built around lowering your head/shoulders and delivering a hit with your body weight behind it...

a wr coming down on the sideline? knock him the fuck out at all costs. don't go and ray lewis the guy, that shit ain't cool, but by all means deliver the biggest hit possible. 'wrapping up' isn't gonna knock that ball loose.

I'm thinking a fine. It'd be just our luck this year to not have Collins for the Minny game, though.

there's actually a good reason for that- you often need multiples refs to confirm that all the conditions have been met (tackle box, no receiver in area, passes los).

Good point.

Can you challenge Grounding penalties?

I don't think the Collie hit will be punished. It shouldn't be, at least. We'll see.

None of Harrison's hits post-"warning" have been as blatant as that though. That's easily the worst of any of the hits after since the re-emphasis from what I remember.

I'd be surprised if there was a suspension.
Of all the hits to discipline, that's not it.

Bad judgment by Nick though and I'm glad Roy's ok.

I hope that sports media starts talking about teams other than the Cowboys after this. The Jags deserve to be talked up more than they do.

If a player is up in the air, they have little to no control over their body. When someone comes flying in full speed like a missile and leads with their head (like Collins did), there's a damn good chance to seriously injure someone.

A proper tackle requires the defender to wrap the ballcarrier up and drive through them. To many defenders today go straight for the big hit and don't tackle. Running full speed into and launching yourself into someone who has no control in your body will get someone hurt, or even worse killed.

I don't have a problem with the NFL protecting players, its how their enforcing these rules. They're not consistant at all.

when someone can't brace for a hit, thats when your eyes light up as a defensive back - you can't just raise an entire culture of hard hitting for generations then all of a sudden say 'hold up, next time you're about to lay a guy out - like you're paid to do - be absolutely positive that you position your angle so that theres no possible way that your helmet touches his. yes, i know you've got 4.4 speed, adapt'

there's a difference between malicious hits and head hunting and football players playing football.

Rodgers is showing why he's a pro bowl quarterback.

You realize the only team that will be talked about this week has three total wins

The OPI that nullified Miles Austin's 80 yard TD a few weeks ago apparently broke him. Guy ain't done jack shit since.
