I have no problems with the tough guy.

the whole "two differant games whicha re identical other then lead character" is weird as fuck though.

hang on, wasn't Last Remnant originally going to have a similar thing?
I got the same impression as you;

http://www.gamespot.com/pages/unions/read_article.php?topic_id=25617301&union_id=8508

Directed by Hiroshi Takai, the story of The Last Remnant follows two protaganists Rush Sykes, an 18 year old swordsman and The Conqueror a battle-hardened mysterious man. Each are designer for the better of both worlds, where Rush has more of an eastern appearance, The Conqueror has a more western apperance. The game will not force you to choose between the characters though, as Rush is focused more as the primary protagonist.

I'm not getting this game because Square-Enix insulted me with their notion of westerners preferring manly old dudes than feminine young guys. Fuck them.

Why do people want the girly animu guy so much? Don't JRPGs have enough of that shit already? Although neither game looks all that interesting to me.
I'd rather play as a 'pretty boy' 'girly animu guy' than this haggered looking thing

He is pretty ugly, yes. Why can't they do it right and have an older guy that -doesn't- look like someone smashed his face with a hammer?

Are there meant to be online elements of this game or something? Or do all PS3/360 game trailers mention PSN/XBL? I ask because of this trailer.

I think they just do that to all the games released on the platform whether they are using online or not.

Going to have to wait on impressions for this one it is just looking too weird for me especially that smilie face thing eww.

I'll probably get Replicant, but Gestalt is what I played at TGS.
The TGS demo was only one long fight but it just felt so repetitive and tired. The combat was, to me, floaty and over-simplified. Hopefully it was just the earliness of the demo and things will be much more polished by release.

Or it could just be because it's Cavia. :\

So I'm stuck with the ugly-sandaled ugly dude? Thanks Cavia.

Preorder canceled.

Actually I should blame Square-Enix cause they're always wimping out when it comes to Cavia.

I'd be interested to know why they made the decision they did. I mean, on the surface, it would seem like they're trying to avoid offending the 'average consumer'. The same guy who buys Madden every year, watches NASCAR and likes strictly defined gender roles. But how many of those dudes are going to be buying a Square Enix action RPG, really? Or any SE game, period?

Perhaps the company know this. In fact, I'd wager it's pretty damn likely that they do. If that's the case, then their perception of the core market is that, even there, effete men just won't push unit sales.

The rationale is actually very simple. There is only one English voice track and one Japanese voice track. Replicant is designed entirely to appeal to the Japanese market. Obviously they feel that there Gestalt will be more appealing in general in the West, so there's no reason to confuse matters by releasing two versions or recording another English voice track for Replicant.

Am I reading correctly here? People on the whole moan about the entire Japanese generic protagonist, so along comes a non-generic one and we get more moaning. Interesting to see a "flawed" looking main character. Someone once raised a point saying "how many games have you seen with a fat or old main character?". Not too many...

Oh, shut up.

=/ What's so bad about the main character of Gestalt. Honestly guys...

I'm perfectly fine playing as any character; pretty, ugly, whatever, who cares, just don't come with the usual generic-express prevalent with the lady-boys of JRPG's.

Have to admit I am kinda interested. Too bad they went for the Nordic Barbarian character, rather then a Medieval knight.

The division between these two games must be one of the most stupid things I've ever witnessed.
This is what I was thinking. Not that I prefer one over the other, but rather why the fuck would you do that in the first place? Especially since all the other character have that generic Jrpg look anyhow.

I don't think it's specifically because of the character, but just Cavia/SE's knee jerk reaction to Westerners' perceptions of traditional Japanese bishounen protagonists.

It's like they hired a self professed expert on Western culture(perhaps related to GAF's own Japanese culture expert). Instead of identifying what our issue was with Japanese protagonists, they just went and flipped the stereotypes on their head. Don't like young? Make him old. Don't like pretty/feminine? Make him ugly and haggard. He's gotta look like hes saving his daughter in between slugging beers during halftime during football, like every American. He isn't 'interesting' or 'flawed', hes just a reskin of the Japanese character, one that Westerners supposed to be all starry eyed and accepting of.

It's not the physical attributes of bishounen characters that the majority of us don't like, rather the personality traits that they personify, and it's disappointing that Square/Cavia went the route they did.

Boar riding looks awesome

Some info and screens on boring side quests (fishing, farming) and transportation (boar and boats) : http://www.gamingnexus.com/FullNews/Why-you-should-fish2c-farm2c-and-ride-in-NIER/Item16340.aspx
Looks like we'll have an open world to explore.

And, Nier is all about word play :

Cultivating extremely rare items would certainly be an Achievement to be proud of

Catching a variety of fish and/or an exceedingly high-level fish would certainly be an Achievement to be proud of

Too bad S-E s fucking terrible at designing games for the Western market. This bs reminds me of The Last Remnant interviews before release. "We specifically designed this character to appeal to western audiences."

Looks like a... PS2.5 game? :P

I'd probably get it because it has farming and fishing.
