Nihilistic leaves physical game development, will reform under a new name for digital

No. It's a PR way to say that they are shrinking the number of developers they have.

Yeash, before Christmas too according to this Tweet:

Our re-org has no effect on current projects as the transition will be relatively gradual between now and December.

Yup. And I think it's strange that they are reforming under a different company. It's shady.

it not shady it happens all the time in other industries. its them pretty much distancing themselves from what was nihilistic, and saying hey we're this new thing now. but that new thing will probably still produce trash, seeing as they have a track record for producing trash.

but two days ago they said something about it, something real bad

I know the campaign is usually good...but I have stopped recently tbh. I did stop with MP eventually too though. Would have been nice on Vita but if it wasn't Activision doing it then what's the point. Should definitely be reflected in the price though. A decent MP FPS would definitely be appreciated though so I'm still curious...but this doesn't help at all.

My biggest worry is that the game will be both laggy (as people mentioned that R:BS was) and possibly broken with no one there to fix it.

Who is going to patch multiplayer if it will be broken on launch?

Yep :S

It needs to be ÂŁ10-15. They don't seem to have all that many maps from the trailer either...and with no sp(?) eh..

I bet they are probably just going to port a similar game for iOS and put it out there...and it will flop due to controls, price, competition and battery life...I dunno hopefully not but them thinking they'd be better suited to mobile doesn't instill confidence in their upcoming game either.

I want to make jokes but I'm pretty sure this is stealth layoff news.

I guess the question is, is it still called a layoff if they're reforming as a new company and only some people get to be part of the new company?

I guess the good news about a gradual transition is that the company might actively help the staff they're getting rid of find new roles.

The hate they get on GAF is ridiculous. Resistance is actually a fun game.
It's not as good as the other versions, even Retribution is way better. Burning skies with their super linear structure and not so good scripted events falls at the bottom of the Resistance series IMO. But overall is an Ok game.

The hate they get is due to the fact they're making subpar games in high profile franchises in popular, but under utilized genres on a struggling platform.

Which is more ridiculous: the fact that they opt out of retail "proper big game" development or the horrible name they chose?

The name of course LOL

In other words, most of the hate they get is from people who never even played their games. Herd mentality.

I played Resistance: Burning Skies to a 100% completion rate (easiest platinum ever btw) and it really was nothing to write home about. The game was ugly, lacking in multiplayer modes, and felt low rent in every avenue except in controls.

maybe they hope someone will confuse them for nSpace now

Everyone who makes a Vita game dies. It's like the video from the ring

Seriously!

We've lost these studios:

BigBig - closed after Little Deviants
Zipper - closed after Unit 13
Studio Liverpool - closed after Wipeout 2048 + Vita DLC
Nihilistic - transitioning after COD Vita

I've joked during the Vita party chats that if a studio is shuttering, it seems the Vita is a kiss of death. It's all purely coincidental, and a lot of this I'm saying in jest - I just hope Cambridge, MediaMolecule, Bend won't follow the above fates....

Maybe NaughtyDog was wise ^_-

I'm going to name my Vita Samara now (after her role in the Ring)

Are they actually in trouble or are they just running from their reputation?

I doubt mainstream gamers even know about them.
A lot of you were really mean though :P

Why do publishers/developers(?) think iOS/Android will save them? There are drawbacks to the huge non-gaming userbase, like.. competition...pricing...piracy with the target age group..what's done well since Angry Birds? Sure the risk is lower...but is there an actual payoff these days - or is it just for the random lucky few that gets picked up by mainstream..

Good luck anyway, especially if you're looking to make the next big mobile fps...which isn't a bad idea..

How would you explain Lightbox? Or the dozens of studios transitioning to digital games? Heck, even EA is doing that transition, they're releasing a lot more digital games and much fewer retail games.

but is Marvel: Rise of the Imperfects?

have you played the game I mentioned above?

I haven't. I can tell it's a licensed game, so the game sucking isn't surprising or necessarily a fault of the studio making it.

For instance, Call of Duty is being developed in 6 months. I wouldn't blame the studio if the end result doesn't live up to Black Ops 2, which was in development for two years with an unlimited budget.

Doesn't mean it was in development since then. If you noticed, we had no footage of CoD on Vita until August 2012.
So basically Activision drop the name, then left the project rot for more than one year and finally decided to make a quick effort to put in the shelves on time. Classy.

They actually did some development work but scraped it completely. Nihilistic was called at the last minute so they'd have something to ship this November.

I'd think if anyone is to blame for the quality of games, it's the management/leaders, since they most likely decide what to work on/who to hire, and it's likely that those people are also going to the new studio.

Obviously there are many, many other factors, but I don't think getting rid of any amount of talent, or getting new talent will do any good if the management stays the same.

Anyhow, Activision are seriously mistreating the CoD IP on the portable here -- no support, little information, and hiring a team that seemingly just wanted to get it done as soon as possible to finish a contract. Might be done often, but not as blatantly obvious as this.

And it's MP only? Would even the most dedicated MP fans be interested in this?

CoD engine has existed for many, many years, and it's probably easy to work with and has a lot of documentation, so why is it so hard to make a single player campaign? Modders have single-handedly made loads of relatively lengthy single player campaigns for years in various genres of games.

No matter how they try hide from showing that Nihlistic made Call of Duty on the Vita, people will still know. They need to first prove themselves by making a game that does not suck. The support they have provided to Burning Skies has been terrible. Only earlier this week releasing a much needed patch for the multiplayer of that game. Many people saying that the Call of Duty game on the Vita is a re-skin of burning skies, using much of the same assets.

Another one vouches for mobile apps.

Wait, what? The game tops out at four-on-four matches. That's far from ambitious. If that's what they consider "focused", then I suggest they get their lens checked.

This is like aiming for the bronze medal.

Nah they're aiming for the participation medal.

Only 2 of those closure were unfortunate. but yes if you were a sony studio and were asked to make a vita game, i'd probably start preparing my CV.

Let be fair here,For Zipper and SCE Liverpool it wasn't Vitas fault at all.

Zipper made two horrible PS3 bomba games in a row,MAG was all over the place , SOCOM 4 is a complete betrayal to SOCOM fans and the franchise origin(and got released when PSN got hacked),I think it's even save to say that Zipper was dead even before Unit 13 get out.

Psygnosis died because of the F1 license, they abounded all of their other games for years in favor of F1 license and games, when they lost it they returned to Wipeout but at that time Wipeout as a franchise is over because of Liverpool putting it on the shelf during the PS2 years.

It's more of the fact that the mid budget game is dead that all these developers making Vita games are dying rather than the Vita itself.
