Ok, now that makes sense because I remembered reading they had like $10 billion in reserves a while back, maybe it wasn't very accurate back then but its possible it dropped with 3DS price cut and Wii U development, but never to just $40 million. $4.6 billion would make more sense.

A lot of Nintendo's losses were due to selling a large amount of merchandise in foreign currencies, and having to convert it back into Yen, which has been stronger against the dollar and Euro since the economic downturn of 2007-8. R&D and fewer software releases factor into their bad fiscal year as well.
