Wii 2 will feature a new type of controller that includes a touch screen. The controller will give tablet-like controls to games and can also be used itself as a portable game machine.

The touch panel on the controller is six inches. The controller itself has a built in battery and includes a camera. The camera can be used for a variety of play opportunities -- for instance, a player making an avatar of himself for use in a game.

Nikkei says that Wii 2 will be released in the latter half of 2012.

"2012年半ば" is mid-2012, not "after June 2012"

6" touch screen on a controller that also has triggers, buttons, a d-pad and two analogs (going by the original french report)? Hooooly shit.

For under 400, I would consider but not for anything but mainly Nintendo games as I'm certain this will get more multiplats and those fanbases are clearly rooted in their parts already. Want to see some games though, looking forward to Nintendo presser.

I simply cannot see this console being anything less than $400, the controller itself sounds expensive as fuck. Sounds gimmicky, the Nintendo way.

So at first a few ideas using the crontroller, then only map and radar, never used for anything else after that. Same old.

I'm not sure of exactly how I feel about the touchscreen.

And I certainly can't believe the system will be less than $400.

How much do you think the controllers will cost for this thing? You may have to think twice about what you do when you rage quit.

I can't wait to see the box for the Cafe and the little blurb that says "Controller sold separately". :lol

so basically fall of 2012? big mistake IMO. The Wii will be long dead by then.

Let's wait until after E3 until we start spewing this stuff.

If their conference passes and they have no games on the schedule, then fine.

Latter half of 2012? What the Hell is Nintendo supposed to do for an entire year? They're running on fumes as is.

Rehash Mario, Zelda, and whatever first party games they can, and put them on the Nintendo 3DS.

Latter half of 2012? Well, shit. That would make Cafe the first console ever to be playable two E3s in a row before launching - not a good precedent, and one that certainly doesn't bode well for the quantity of software to be shown.

Nintendo's decision-making has left me scratching my head in bewilderment since E3 2010 (apart from Pokemon which continues to be amazing).

I eagerly await Tuesday's conference with baited breath so things like a touchpad on a button-filled controller and pursuing the hardcore console market with a so-far broken online business model finally make some degree of sense.

I want to be dazzled! And if not, at least give me Xenoblade and continue to do wacky things. I'm cool either way.

They're going to re-release Mario Wii games in red cases like they're doing on the DS.

My concerns about it using a 3-year old gpu (4850) and possibly only 1gb of RAM are falling by the wayside if the damn thing comes with a standalone handheld. WHOA, that would be sick. I'd drop 400 bones for that in a heartbeat.

so this controller will be considered like another Nintendo handeld ? Or does the console have to be on anyway ? (you don't put the disc in the handeld I guess)

This, and one year after ( less ? ) 720/PS4 will be released and the Cafe will look outdated.

Controller still makes no fucking sense, still sounds like they're throwing away the audience that made Wii successful by eliminating motion control as an out-of-the-box feature.

On the one hand, I'm an advocate of a future where handheld systems can be easily used as home consoles on a TV.

On the other hand, Nintendo seems to have made the opposite: a home console that can be used as a handheld. Not sure it's the best way to go about it. 6" for the screen sounds too big.

I'd say that the price of the controller is a much bigger concern than the price of the system itself.
Haha. Each controller is essentially a handheld if this report is true. It sounds like a cool idea on paper, but it would be costly as fuck to play local multiplayer.

It has already been confirmed by the same sites that broke the rumors about the screen that Wii motion controllers will work with the new system.

It is just talking about the streaming capabilities, so when you are away from your TV the game can be streamed to the controller, in a limited range of course.

I hope to god that touch screen is capacitive, although I doubt it will be.

By portable it seems safe to assume they mean around the home. It's quite a good idea really, it's kind of inconvenient being fixed to one location within your house. Also it would be pretty cool if you were able to pair other devices such as tablets.

Throw me in the camp that thinks launching anytime after Xmas 2011 is a big mistake. I strongly feel they will not be the next generation leader unless something about their tech is uncopyable and blows people away.

Which is why I said "out-of-the-box."

also, 3DS cannibalization confirmed!
