Nine years ago today Ubisoft announced the first Assassin's Creed.

Look guys, I like Assassin's creed, I've played and completed all mainline entries and I'm looking forward to playing Victory.

But please don't compare Rockstar's GTAV to AC and go as far as saying that unity has a better open world than GTAV.
That is just offensive. Rockstar's open worlds are the best in the industry in terms of believability and immersion.

And I sure as hell don't remember NPC's popping in before my eyes in Los Santos.

I agree with you but don't say GTA V doesn't have pop in issues like Unity.

You do know that's PS3 right?
Since we are comparing a next gen AC to GTAV at least quote me a next gen pic lol

I have to admit that unity's map did immerse me, it felt nice to play around in but I still felt Los Santos was more alive.

I remember being incredibly hyped for AC1 with that debut demo. I've bought every single mainline console game since then, beat them all except for Unity. I stopped playing about halfway through.

I really don't think they're bad games at all, in fact I loved a few of them. The formula is just so routine now that while playing Unity I just said to myself "I really won't miss out on anything by dropping this franchise". Traded it back in. Feels weird to say after so long but, I'm pretty sure I'm done with the series.

Same here. Stopped playing after Sequence 6 (not because of the graphics). AC Victory doesn't interest me at all somehow. Unity was such a step back.
IMO Mordor was the actual AC game last year. Batman will do a great job as an AC replacement this year.
Everything that was great about AC has been incorporated by competitors while AC never really evolved (dat melee combat).

Anyways, thanks to Ubisoft. AC had a great run and gave me many hours of joy!

I certainly wouldn't say that. The behavior you get from GTAV's npcs are this uncanny valley type feeling. You most definitely can not go inside as many buildings as in ACU. The movement is sluggish due to so much animation priority(actions such as vaulting, climbing etc go on for much longer than they should). You don't see stuff like NPCs meeting each other if they see each other on the street, people holding hands, carrying their drunken friends, arguing etc. it just feels more realistic. Naturally because they had alot more room to work with compared to rockstar who had to work on last gen consoles.
czupph.gif

I feel like i'm in a video game world when I play GTA, especially since it's claim to fame is the lack of realism and arcady aspect to what is a very realistic looking world. That's why it's fun, but with ACU I feel like it's a living breathing city since the aim is to be more realistic despite the premise of parkour loving hidden blade wielding assassins. Glitches aside.

2 > Black Flag > Brotherhood > Revelations > 3 > 1 > Unity

This is the objective truth and anyone who disagrees with me is a heathen.

We'll have to disagree then. I found Paris to be a far more interesting, and immersive world than Los Santos. Los Santos just felt empty, it's a US city, the streets should be bustling with people, there should be traffic everywhere. Obviously this wouldn't be ideal for gameplay, however it negatively impacts on the feel of the world. The NPC's are also believable, they go about doing everyday things, singing, shopping, rioting.

The detail of Paris is also unparalleled. I mean, look at this:

assassins_creed_unity_72.jpg

Almost every single building is this detailed. Quite a number of the building also have gorgeously detailed interiors. Every corner of the world feels real, feels like Paris would have been like. Unity has the most immersive world I've ever explored in a game.

This video show's exactly what I mean regarding NPCs. It's the middle of the day in a big city like Los Santos and the roads are almost completely empty. It just feels weird.

Shit, man! What a true milking!

I would be honest, AC definitely has its own charm with really well detailed historic locations and cool way to experience them. But as a game, gameplay is really mediocre and story is something to not even care about, after brotherhood. Not to say, the performance is atrociously bad on PC and I wouldn't bother to spend money until it's 75% off.

Ah yes, the first timid, delicate steps towards seeing just how much they could diearrea deficate all over their userbases face, and use marketing to get them to beg for more.

First Assassin's Creed had the best atmosphere/world.

The second had the best gameplay.

Everything else was garbage, except for sailing a pirate ship. I think the series is long past lost though.

I only played Black Flag and Unity but BF was much more fun to me.

Unity was very disappointing, I hope for the next one they rework the core gameplay from the ground up

Lol texture draw distance is so bad in this game that it looks like ps3 game if you look 10ft ahead. Texture quality is too inconsistent. Talking about real. Come on man.

The only ones that I love are 3 and brotherhood becuase of the setting and characters.
Unity would have been up my alley, but after the failure of release I yet need to buy and play the game.
Victory is something that I also want to play, again because of the setting. And I hope this time they get it right.

Once it goes to asia or something I probably will not give a damn. Apart from the few palaces and castles, I find old chinese/japanese architecture boring. Same with AC1 middle east clone minarets and houses everywhere, and even revelations (you had santa sofia, the mall, and two or thre more places that I found interesting, the rest is boring).
Would love to play some roman times or ancient egypt, or something crazy like new york in the 1920's.
The cities, history and architecture are the most important parts for me, each game that didnt brought that, was a big failure for me.

Nine years ago I was drinking Vault, playing the shit out of Timesplitters and having this reaction about Assassin's Creed hype:

incredulous.gif

Other than my drink (brewed green tea) and my game (Pokemon ORAS), nothing has changed.

It's main problem is that it's the generic Ubisoft game. With the towers, and the feather, and the treasures etc.

It's second problem is that it is ridiculously easy.

Imagine a game being more than nice moves. Imagine a game offering an actual engaging challenge. It's easy if you tried.

What if I told you not everyone has the same tastes as you? We all can like whatever we want, your opinion is your opinion. I respectfully disagree.

"Press A to Win."
Actually one mistake and he would've been forced into combat. That kinda thing is much hard to do in Unity compared to past games.

Imagine a game being more than nice moves. Imagine a game offering an actual engaging challenge. It's easy if you tried.
Trust me that gif is not as easy as it seems, anyone who still has a copy of the game is welcome to try prove me wrong.

I play AC to wander around a visually stunning open world and stylishly kill guards. It's quite relaxing actually, it's a game where I don't want to be challenged, I just want to enjoy it.

Also it can be quite challenging if you try and play it without being seen. If I feel like an actual challenge I try and take out an area of guards without being seen and without using Eagle Vision. That's an engaging challenge.

One of my fav series. I was so damn disappointed with Unity but am hoping that Victory brings the series back in top form and with plenty of polish. I'm playing through Black Flag again and honestly just want a fucking full on pirate game from Ubi. Shit is soo damn good.

Black Flag was one of my favorite games from last gen, and probably near the bottom of top 20 of all time. the Ezio games were also really good. I haven't played Rogue or Unity yet, but they're on my list for the Steam summer sale (hopefully).

anyone remember when the game was suppose to be a PlayStation exclusive... and they showed one pic in magazines? it was the metal part of a Knight or something, I forget what it's called.

it had a different title name at the time.

Who said anything about challenge?
What about that gif isn't good gameplay, timing is required to pull it off so it's not just press A to win, (there's a major disparity between what it looks like when someone is really good at AC and when someone is not), the animations are blending beautifully so that it looks like big animation etc etc.

Being italian, playing the Ezio games was amazing, absolutely loved the detail they put into the cities.... but the gameplay is SO boring and unrewarding?

Still havent played Unity, i hear its awful but Paris looks lovely ;_; I'll have to stomach the bitter pill someday

Items in bold I've played/finished. I'm happy and sad all at the same time. Sure it's been a wild ride, excited to be the assassin, playing DNA fragments on the Animus, etc. etc. Desmond was one of the reasons I enjoyed AC. Now it's like I got to find that guy again. I'm sure they can do it again, but I lost touch to what I enjoyed about it. Maybe Victory will do it. I didn't really like Liberation. I at one time was a pretty big AC fan. I was there on 2 midnight launches too. It just feels weird stepping into a series 3 to 10 games short? I think the series has been in the production cycle one too many times. The focus now feels like its trending to be "cool" more than anything. Once you played Fable 1 and 2 you felt solid about the game's lore (for the most part), 3 comes out and you could care less about anything above or below the latter. It was just Fable being another game. I feel something similar with AC.

But it's still ridiculously easy to do, even for someone like me who is a relative AssCreed noob. Also, the argument being made for these immersive worlds that fans get to explore falls far short where Unity is concerned. Awful frame rates and pop-in, brain dead AI and animations being repeated in concert by a horde of clothes-changing, gravity defying NPCs is incredibly distracting.
I've had fun with AC2 and 4 (Unity and the first felt like tech demos), but for every person that looks like they're taking an agenda fueled shit on the series, there seems to be one more defending it with their eyes closed.

And nine years ago today I wish I had picked up Uncharted first.

I worked at GameStop when both AC and Uncharted launched. I bought AC LE and then rented Uncharted from the store. I finished Uncharted and sold AC sometime thereafter. I didn't really get at completing AC's bulk until 2 came out. AC2 strengthened that bond. AC1 was a fresh idea, but it had its fare share of problems. There wasn't much holding you in there except for the same things you did over and over again. I heard Uncharted's main character had over 1000 different animations and was sold. The lineup of games were easier to sort through because you had some solid IPs coming out. They continued for a very long time. I've owned like 4 different copies of AC1. PS3 twice (disc) and PC twice (disc and digital).

I remember my PS3 froze with AC1 the first day owning it. I had to do a hard reset to the console. I was a bit pissed about that.

If it's so easy then by all means show me if you have the game. Also, framerate has been heavily patched, animations definitely don't repeat(there's so many that the only things that repeat are loops in the crowd), Pop in is an open world game issue(looking to see how Witcher 3 will handle this on consoles) The AI is much smarter than in earlier games to the point that it was a complaint. And remember that I said "glitches aside." And no, on gaf, the people who come into any and all Ubi threads to tell us how much Ubisoft sucks are the definite majority. Or a very very VERY loud minority.

Now please remove the nintendo/list war nonsense from my thread.

AC1 was that mysterious project everyone wondered how it would translate into a good and engaging game. Well, it didn't. It was incredibly boring. AC2 was really good though, but we already knew what to expect by then. The series didn't really get better since AC2 and Brotherhood. I didn't hate Unity that much though, but it felt pedestrian.

Yeah, 360 announcement came much later for whatever reason. I think it was called Project Assassin.

8 games in 9 years for a mainline is a lot. CoD has gone longer and reaching high numbers too. Removed my post though.

EDIT: To get technical with Mario, the New super Mario Bros. series are more like side games and done by a different group and not part of the mainline series. The Mainline series of Super Mario are done by much of the same teams from Super Mario Bros. 1 to 3D World making up only 16 games in 29 years.

It's an annual series, one that has had three major overhauls and has kept up with the times so to speak in terms of technology. If they were still using AC1 animations by this time then yes i'd agree with the criticism of the largest gaming company having the manpower to do annual releases.
