Ninokuni PS3 - Official site open (screens, trailer)

I think this looks better overall than the Naruto game... its not exactly fair though...Naruto vs Ghibli...mismatch is an understatement. Animation also seems even better in this than the Naruto game.

looking at both this and Naruto Storm 2 trailer, Naruto's facial animation is better than this game. you can feel the emotion in Naruto's trailer while in this one, currently, the face is a bit stiff, except in the fireball spell scene. that one is well done.

Ninokuni suffers from the same problem as Zelda:SS - the eyes on both the main character and Link look dead.

I like the way Level-5 is doing it BIG HI-RES for the hell of it, no fear of running out of budget, straight old school old anime Dragon-Quest-y-sprang-up-Pokemon-ish J-RPG.
So Japanese stubborn...

I agree, Namco's Naruto games animate a lot better than this. This game really doesn't look that good.

You try way too hard sometimes to get someone to quote your tag.
Just saying.

OH MY! <3

I'm in love with it. Defo my most wanted game right now. Looks beautiful and I'm defo geto DQ8 vibes from it with a bit of Pokemon going on it the battles. But is it an upgraded WKC engine?

I pray to God that this comes to the West.

Not to go off topic but do you know what I want to see? Studio Ghibli + Team ICO.

Was that a world map I saw? As in an actual world map, no bullshit?

WOW, will buy this mofo just to support

Since the screens thread seems to have died in favor of this one I'll just repost what I posted there:

Looks absolutely gorgeous! But why can we never get fully cel-shaded backgrounds, just like the characters? You can easily tell that the backgrounds are polygons with hand-drawn textures applied, while the characters are pretty much indistinguishable from their drawn counterparts. Having everything cel-shaded to the same degree would make the results unbelievable. Is cel-shading really that taxing on the hardware?

Still, it looks great. Please localize! I don't speak a word Japanese, and I couldn't muster playing through a game like this with a translation guide.

Thats the style they are going for...Ghibli films use subtle facial expressions rather than the schizophrenic emoting present in naruto.... I do agree it is a little stiff at this stage.

I still maintain that the overall visual cohesion in this is quite a bit better than the naruto game...the naruto game has 2d backgrounds in the field (I think)...

What would Ueda's team need Ghibli for?

Artwork and music? :P

The backdrops in Ghibli's movies are hand-painted, and mostly static. Creating painting-like scenery in 3D would be an extremely complex thing to do.
GOW3 is the exception, of course!(lolz)
Shit even when Ghibli uses CG scenery in their movies I can notice the change immediately, the disconnect between the CG and the hand-drawn stuff is pretty big.

Level 5 I think got really close with that town, although the forest looks kinda blah. I don't think they are going for a painterly look anyway.

Yeah, you're right. I was wrong to suggest cel-shaded backgrounds, since cel-shading gives that undetailed, flat look of animated characters rather than hand-painted backgrounds (which are usually much more detailed).

I'd still like to see a fully cel-shaded game (maybe they exist, I just haven't played one), but when going for the Ghibli look it's obviously not the right choice.

Is there any other technique which could be used to make 3D environments look more hand-painted and less polygonal?

If they made it indistinguishable from an animated film, it's be a shit game. Goodbye to playable frame rate, goodbye to the overworld map. Fuck that shit. 3D environments rain the pain over running a 3D character around a 2D picture.

So, let's be honest, what are the chances this comes stateside?

Level 5 is gonna put up their US office in September so I'd say... Pretty high.

I'm really looking forward to playing both games, especially now that I see even the battles are a bit different in the PS3 version. In the DS version, Oliver can attack on his own, but it looks like your human party members in the PS3 version each have an Imagine and they command them to attack for them.

Agreed...you can't really compare an animated movie to a 2d game, just because they have parity of art approach...3d gives more of an opportunity to be immersed in the world and appreciate the visuals

Agreed, that Team ICO, visually and aurally are on a par with Ghibli...the don't need any help

That was actually really impressive. I can't wait to see more! The battle system appears to hold some promise... we'll see if that actually pans out.

For what I've read this is the book for the PS3 version (but it looks like a box to me...)

I think that this is the box where the game and the hypothetical book will come (as the box in the Ds version)

Is there anything about this game that isn't beautiful?

WHELP THAT SETTLES IT.

Sorry Versus, a full scale AMAZIN trailer beats out a page and a half of scans.

Ninokuni has bounced ahead as most anticipated!!

Not for me. I haven't played a single Level 5 console RPG that I've liked, whereas Nomura has given me a couple.

Still excited for this though. Could be the AAA game Level 5 has been trying to make all along.

They're close... but I disagree

And it looks like the monsters are attacking on their own as you command them... maybe it's real-time instead of turn-based? I hope not. :(

Even if all it amounts to is that snippet in the trailer, the design of the overworld already looks better than all the level design in Level 5's other own brand console RPGs.

Maybe it has the FF option where you can choose to have enemies not attack during your turn's command selection?
