Nintedo Has The Potential to Pull a "Sony 2015" at E3 2016

They've been so withheld these past few years that I'm really, really curious what they could have for first year launch. A lot of development power is MIA. They also have really solid foundations for a lot of their games from the Wii U. They should have enormous potential to get content out.

Here we go with the shitting on E3 2015 again. Sony's E3 was the embodiment of what an awesome conference should look like: gameplay videos, megatons, hype and dreams.

I get some people prefer pure content to flashiness and promises. Companies have a product for those people, and it's called the rest of E3 coverage.

Yup, one of the most memorable E3 conferences ever.

Ofcourse this isn't to say that Nintendo can't have a very very good show though with games like these and more that we want to see.

Remember the silence before WiiU came?

NINTENDOLAND!!! CHOO CHOO

No because we already know all the games that are going to be showcased.

The public didnt know anything about FFVIIm Shenmue.

We already know about Pikmin 4 Zelda and whatnot.

So the thread devolved into a "game X is far more meaningful than game Y to me?"

Oh boy

Every publisher attending E3 has the potential to really show something amazing. Well except for EA.

Yeah, because Nintendo doesn't have anymore studios or collabs up their sleeves.

No matter what they do, the PS4K will over-shadow it.

A mild update to an existing platform will not overshadow a new Nintendo system. If sony outdoes them it is because of the PS4 in general, not some slight upgrade, unless the rumors are wrong and the PS4K is a huge update that will actually run games in native 4k with good frame rates.

Still genuinely curious about this. Can anyone school me please? ☺

Well, there's whatever they've got on tap for PSVR in 2016 and maybe Horizon: Zero Dawn. But that's a big maybe. They've also got some digital stuff, like the Shadow of the Beast reboot and (hopefully) What Remains of Edith Finch.

I'm sure some would count No Man's Sky with how much Sony is going to bat for it, but that's on PC the same day and would likely have a longer tail on that platform than on the PS4 because of the kind of game it is.

Hot Shots Golf, GT Sport, Gravity Rush 2, Ratchet and Clank (in a week or so) and Horizon: Zero Dawn (and MLB 16) come to mind. Whether you believe that they'll make 2016 or not is a different matter altogether.

Good getting rid of "proper 3D Mario" bit since honestly I'd say 3D World is the most proper 3D Mario 3D Mario has ever been, but still, for the millionth time, Galaxy is not in any way exploration-focused. It's just as linear and goal-oriented as 3D World. The main difference between Galaxy and 3D World is the amount of superfluous padding Galaxy has and 3D World having waaaay more unique levels. I will be upset if they go backwards on this. I don't mind if they make a new 3D Adventure Mario franchise to placate fans of that style of game but 3D World is what I've waited for 3D Mario to be since 3D Mario became a thing (It finally felt like Mario in 3D), but they haven't made a game like that since Sunshine.

Sony is more willing to take risk, they demostrate that with a bunch of developments, Nintendo seek a more comfortable zone, with some new IP every gen, and one or two collabs, but nothing at Sony's scale (third party wise)
Even new ip from Nintendo (or their games in general) use a pretty tight budget.

And that's bad why? We've certainly had enough studios close these past 10 years because they bet too big on new IPs. Why should Nintendo start populating that club with a few of their own?

Nope. Sony pulled off a conference that will never be repeated, you had the three "dream games" all at once; FFVII R, Shenmue 3 and TLG. Specifically the first two. Plus a shit ton of new content as well like PSVR, Horizon etc

Not to say Nintendo can't have a top conference but their is a lack of games that fit that stature through a combination of time and hiatus and broken dreams

Metroid Prime is arguably starting to get there. But I think we've only recently started to get to the point of begging for a new one and having dreams crushed

Otherwise the only games still waiting that fit that mould are HL3 and Crash or quite a few PC games like WoW2 or a new KOTOR and it's unlikely Nintendo will have those

If Nintendo can deliver a Metroid Prime but more modern, it would be enough for me to buy a console providing it's not prohibitively expensive. I've said for years I would buy a Wii U for Metroid.

So just that would be a megaton for me.

I have a feeling Nintendo will pull it off this year. Not too sure about Nintedo though.

I don't want a PS3 port, a remake and a kickstarter announced.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or if you seriously believe the announcements Sony made last year were just another PS3 port, just another remake, and just another Kickstarter. The hat trick worked because it consisted of three of the four most wished for videogames of the past decade.

I know I said I agree with those saying they need to pull a Sony 2013...

But are some of yall really down playing 2015?

That E3 was legendary. Tears were shed, ppl called their loved ones...lol.

Even MS bought out backwards compatibility. E3 2015 was so memorable I don't really remember E3 2014.

Tanabe's comments on Metroid Prime 4 has me think it's either already in development or has at least been okayed for development.

"If we started for Wii U now, it would likely take three years or so. So it would likely now be on Nintendo's NX console," he said.

"It's a long time but it would need to include a lot of content, which would take a lot of work on the development side."

"Instead of broadening it to more planets I would have one and would focus on the timeline, and being able to change that. That's one interesting idea I have in mind... but I understand many people thought that [Echoes] was too difficult."

Tanabe reminded us about the ending of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. After Samus’s ship flies off into the distance, another ship suddenly appears. He said that players Metroid Prime Hunters should recognize that the ship belongs to a bounty hunter called Sylux. "He’s actually chasing after Samus, and that’s where that game ends," Tanabe said. "There’s still more I want to build around the story of Sylux and Samus. There’s something going on between them. I want to make a game that touches upon [it]."

"I’m also thinking that, in that eventual game between Sylux and Samus that might get made, that I wants to involve the [Galactic] Federation as well," he said. "So it would be a good idea to release a game like Federation Forces to flesh out its role in the galaxy before moving on to that.

So basically Metroid Prime 4 is shaping up to be a game set on a single planet with some kind of time-travel mechanic and possibly involving the Galactic Federation and Sylux. Or maybe the Sylux stuff will be a different game.

This is obviously a topic that's going to vary for different people, but for me there isn't a lot Nintendo could announce that would be of the same Calibur as FFVII and TLG.

Metroid Prime would be pretty close, though, or just a new 3D Metroid by Retro (it doesn't need to be an FPS).

Maybe a new Eternal Darkness? I was never able to play the first, but it's one of those franchises that I would like to see given new life.

Wonderful 102 as well, but that seems like a ridiculous thing to want at this stage.

New IP is a different story. Even though Splatoon didn't stick with me it's a very cool game and I'd like to see its mechanics put into a frame I actually enjoyed. More interesting stuff like this will elevate the conference for me.

I will get an NX at launch if there is a new 3D Mario, regardless of the above. If there isn't one I'll wait until it's available.

Sony's E3 2015 is a once in a life time thing. Not going to happen.
Three games people waited and dreamed for up to 15 years for where announced. You can't replicate a conference and the reactions to that.

But Nintendo really doesn't need to.. Nintendo just has to do decently. Stop being shitty and they'll win people over

Retro is very much a wildcard to me. I thought the talent that made Metroid Prime left Retro a while ago? The only game they made since then was a very good but very derivative 2D DK platformer (and one of the big reasons it was so good was David Wise who doesn't work for Retro).

I'd actually be pretty surprised if they went back to Metroid at this point. I'm seriously hoping for a 3D platformer, maybe something with more exploration to satisfy the crowd that wants more 64/Sunshine.

I swear NX better be out of this world with the amount of hype Nintendo fans are putting into it.
It has nothing to do with hype, most people just want Nintendo to spill the beans.

Not my argument I was initially going for though.

They've lost some senior staff that worked on the Prime titles, but most of the team is still there, IIRC.

And Shenmue 3 and The Last Guardian were for who?

what sort of wide reaching appeal are the last guardian and shenmue iii supposed to have?

Fans who have been waiting largely for those titles for a dozen years or more through delays and wish fulfillment. Shenmue fans were specifically for all kinds of fans who were once Dreamcast owners, and TLG fans are for an 150 million strong user base that happened to play either ICO and SOTC 10 or 15 years ago depending on the game.

I don't think Nintendo can have the same type of hype as that conference from their titles alone, that's just my opinion. At this point, the pool of fans is just not enough. Even counting those of us waiting for Nintendo to get their shit together and launch a semi traditional platform with a normal controller scheme to jump back in.

The products Nintendo would need (IMO) to get them near that top tier conference standing:

1) Metroid Prime. It's been a decade since he last one. And the reveal of Federations was such a slap in the face after the crappiness of Other M that there is beginning to be a real pent up demand

2) Pokemon open world RPG. How long has this been such and obvious and begged-for product? A proper open RPG for consoles using next gen tech. It's at the point where nobody believes Nintendo would ever do it, so it would make a great surprise

3) Mother 4. This would be a hugely awesome shock on the level of Shenmue/FFVII-R. Need I say more? With actual plans for the West

I had no idea ico and sotc sold 150 million combined copies. That's even more than call of duty and Mario kart! I mean they were decent (well sotc was) but that would make them even more relevant titles than 2D Mario

A Proper Metroid
F-Zero
EDIT: Exploration focused 3D Mario (Mario 64/Galaxy style)
Console Animal Crossing

So people will be hyped for 4 games from which 3 likely won't sell a lot? Strange.

And at the end of the day not sure if that matters that much, Nintendo had a pretty good E3 back in 2014 and that didn't really change the fortunes of Wii U. My guess is that they have to throw money at the right places and then do whatever.

Nintendo needs to show the games. I won't believe they have them if they don't show them beforehand. I trusted them with Wii U despite not seeing anything pre release that I seriously wanted. Not happening again. They need a conference like Wii 2006 where we saw Zelda, Prime 3, Galaxy etc well before the console even released.

If final sales mattered in determining hype only games like CoD, Assassin's Creed and Destiny would ever get any. Shenmue 3 and TLG likely won't sell that much relatively but the hype for them is still there (and rightfully so). The same goes for the games you listed; Metroid, F-Zero, etc are the kinds of games that people who watch E3 want.

What? 150 million? F-Zero is just as big as Shenmue if not bigger. Shenmue is niche.

Nobody said that, i said a 150 million strong user base. There were 150 million PS2 or 80 mil PS3 owners out there, any number of whom happend to play SOTC or ICO and are hyped for TLG after years of delays. Along with Shenmue's fanbase and FF7's fanbase, which has been on tons of consoles since, made it a very legendary conference that i think could not be replicated by Nintendo.(And if we're talking about E3 in general, Nier 2 counts as well)

I don't think that Nintendo has the pull solely in their pool of franchises for that with the fanbase they have, even though they are loyal.

I agree with this too.

2006 was special for Nintendo.
