Nintendo 3DS Included Application And Feature Set Video

Initially, sure, only really worth it for schoolkids and commuters, and people who live in cities. And people who go to game stores.

But I don't see why it shouldn't work elsewhere if the system takes off.

Now that it can communicate irrespective of the game you have in at the time, and irrespective of the state of that game, it should allow for plenty of overlap. I mean, think of the likely attach rate of Mario Kart for example... and nintendogs... those are going to be installed on a lot of systems 'tag mode' areas.

Most areas do not have the population density and gaming population that Japan has. The 3DS is completely aimed at the Japanese market, and possibly to the exclusion of any other territory. Time will tell if it's the right move.

As a resident of Iowa City and the broader Midwest I assure you that this is not going to happen.

I dunno what are the worries about the tag mode... it's just a small feature on top. It really doesn't matter much and won't create, maintain or kill the buzz.

The huge thing here is 3D, Virtual Console and the double camera. Just you guys wait when Nintendo unveils their "3D filming" application, I'm sure they thought about that one.

i doubt it. i go to a pretty big university here in washington. i dont think i ever see anyone playing psp or ds anymore..

Holy shit! It can automatically make a Mii of someone by taking their picture?

Also, can someone explain to me what the whole Street Fighter thing was about? I didn't really get it.

So I'm guessing there is absolutely no chance of transferring your VC games from your Wii and onto your 3DS? I'd even accept having no-3D mode if they allowed us to go this route.

None of the hardware things are as substantive as showing off a unified friends' list or a new way of saving games to the flash memory or, frankly, anything else that is relevant to the games and how we play them. Nothing in that video is even as big for games as the Sleep Mode from the original DS. Maybe innovations will come, and I don't want to be a downer. I just feel that Nintendo's focus is way off the mark here.
That's why I'm hoping that Nintendo has deliberitaly delayed the launch of the 3DS in order to work on a better online system, friends' list and everything else you've brought up.

I mean, isn't it a bit odd that Nintendo would skip out on holiday sales even though it looks like the system is hardware-wise done and they could safely make it for christmas with one of their strongest launch line ups ever?

They've said the delay was down to worries over supply. So maybe they were having component supply issues that won't be resolved in time to support a launch this year.

At the very least, we non Japanese people will enjoy higher battery life due to turning off this useless feature. Perhaps this way NoE/NoA can afford a lower price by including a lesser battery for a device that won't have wireless on the whole day?

Because batteries are very expensive to mass produce.

You must be oblivious if you think there are no DS/PSP users around you when you're in an university...

By the way, does none of you work or go to school or something? Most people have at least some moments in their weeks where they will be constantly around people. Unless you're all farmers or something.

Hmm, I don't see the complaints about the wifi thing myself. I'm only from a town in the UK, but I'm sure I'd get a few hits just from my usual bus into work every day. Lots of DS players around here.

Although I guess if you live in real middle-of-nowhere America, you might go for days without seeing anyone? Dunno. I think the UK is pretty densely populated, although obviously not to Japan levels :lol

What gives you this impression? Because it features a built in tag mode which may not be as useful in some parts of the US?

I don't understand why people can't get it through their heads that the price won't be $300 when it releases here. What else makes it exclusionary for the US?

3D Augmented reality going to be really interesting to see how and what come from it

I been calling it for a while as the future of the 3DS. It's definitely going to be one of the things that sets it apart.

My only concern is its possible effect on battery life. I have already seen first hand how stuff like this can sap battery on an Android phone.

3G radios drain battery like crazy, the 3DS won't have to deal with that.

Which wireless solution is Nintendo using then? I believe that Wifi drains even more battery than 3G radios.

Also I live in Savannah (two Universities, one of the biggest art schools in the country, and an arts based downtown area that is crawling with the types of people who would have 3DSs) so tag mode is going to be awesome for me :D

Go wander around University of Iowa campus. You'll pick up some other systems.

Europe is quite dense population wise and we enjoy a quite good public transportation system.

maybe bluetooth

In order for the Tag Mode to succeed in the US, Nintendo will need to create some sort of phenomenon with this feature: making Western gamers a habit of bringing the 3DS in Tag Mode with them anywhere they go.

Nintendo had created many gaming phenomenon in the past like Pokemon and Wii, will see what they can do this time; and most importantly, how sustainable it is for the long run (so they people don't just fiddle with it for the first 3 months and never use the feature or bring their 3DS everywhere again).

I much rather have them focus on User ID (like Gamertag) and better online ecosystem so I can connect with everyone under one account (and not multiple Friend Codes). I wonder if they upgraded the Mii to be used as that universal ID. They only need to open the Mii to all 3rd party developers and be used like a Gamertag... (though the Wii proved otherwise)

Maybe they will try to do bothm, but i think they willl concentrate on local multiplayer, since thats one of their strengths

On the iPhone, wifi uses considerably less battery than 3G.

This actually made me realize, the slide pad isn't the only thing that's changed since E3. Those cameras look slightly different, and closer to the system's edge. Here's the old version:

Always-on, asynchronous (not required to have game in) tag mode is an evolution of a limited use feature in the DS. I think people underestimate the implications even outside Japan; it's a freakin' DS, there will be millions of them in circulation, all over the place. When most people have a 3DS, tag is always on for every game they have (in theory), then in urban areas and on college campuses, the 3DS tag will be a big deal.

I'm not even in a college area, and I regularly see people with a DS system; a few a week. If all those DSes were communicating automatically, it'd be quite a useful feature that'd have a real impact.

If Sharp is indeed their screen supplier I would wager it is going to come down to that. When they did their Press Release about their new 3D Screen thy said production would not begin until July.

If they didnt get off to as good a start as hoped or even delayed that would be the culprit for sure.

Some thoughts:

1. StreetPass Mode and SpotPass Mode. Having to leave the 3DS in Sleep Mode in order for the StreetPass to work kind of worries me. It's a feature that Nintendo really needs to push and market in order for it to flourish. I can see majority of people just turn off the system 95% of time and not put their DS in sleep mode 24/7 to maximize its potential.

One way to remedy this is to change the way the system physically turn on and off. The iPod Touch (or most phones) is a good example: its 'default' mode is in Sleep Mode when you don't use it. It requires more effort to 'fully turn it off' than just to leave it to sleep. I very rarely turn my iTouch fully off, but usually turn my DS off when I don't play it.

2. StreetPass Mode and Mii Plaza. If the mode flourishes, I can already see 95% of my tags will be for Mii Plaza, instead for games. This will be a problem with so many "junk tags".

2. I hope there will be some kind of upgraded Pictochat + Mii feature that can be used online. Is Pictochat gone for good?

3. AR games. Hopefully every retail games will come with a card or two in the box as a bonus. It wouldn't cost them more than printing a manual or warranty card.

does Japan have a Netflix equivilent? I was thinking Netflix is all but confirmed, but since they are striking deals with individual labels, could Nintendo possibly be creating their own service?

I live near Armstrong State (like right down the street from it)

You know what I'm talking about then! Downtown Savannah is going to be crawling with 3DSs!
