I would hazard a bet that they are waiting for the Wii U kernel exploit that works on all current firmwares to be released. Once that's out (any day now) and the method is made public, the Wii U updates will be just like with the 3DS.

I just realized that the Wii U has been on version 5.X.X for nearly a year now. I wonder what's up with that, since Nintendo typically bumps the major version number once every 6 months-ish. Maybe they're working on some major overhaul or something.

Yep, yep. I think we'll see major new firmware updates for 3DS and Wii U at some point between E3 and the holidays to integrate (as much as they can with this generation) the new DeNA account system.

Apparently, the early word is that it adds stuff for the NFC adapter on old3DS, toys with DS stuff but doesn't block anything new on new3DS.
