Nintendo 3DS smuggled off a Chinese assembly line

On second thought... The gloss is a little mystifying. The DSi XL has an even grippier matte bottom that feel fantastic. I remember when I first grabbed it - it felt like the culmination of handheld materials for nintendo consoles (seriously - it's not the same matte as the DSi and feels a crap ton better).

I get the feeling nintendo made a lot of design choices with the 3DS to highlight the 3D as much as possible.

I bet the gloss somehow makes the 3D pop better. In the same way I'm sure they'll make the interior black for all colors. This first hardware revision is designed specially to highlight the 3d.

Couldn't care less about the power button placement. OTOH the headphone jack has now finally settled in the worst possible position on the device.

Imagine a person lying in bed, on their back, playing a handheld game. Where does the system rest? What part of the system touches what part of the person? And what's sticking out there, poking a hole right through the sternum?

I'm not sure about the use of gloss (that's more likely there to distinguish it visually from the DSi) but the use of black is almost certainly done on purpose for technical reasons to enhance the 3D effect.

There's no reason to gloss the bloody buttons other than because they wanted it to look frickin shiny :lol

it's just in a weird place and it looks crap. i prefer it on the side like on the ds lite or psp

not a deal breaker by any means but i still dont like it

The power button is the least used button during gameplay, it shouldn't be on the front of the console, the side slider was perfect, hopefully they will go back to it.

Sort of off topic question, but has Nintendo said if the 3DS shopping channel will have DSiware content from the start? It would make sense for them, having gone to the trouble of building up that catalog, to have it available on the 3DS store.

I am so late, but:

That factory worker is a gentleman and a patriot for this stunt. GAF should salute the poor guy before he's hit on his way to work by a random airplane.

But the PSP suffers the same problem (IDK about the DSLite).

I have never turned off the dslite at all, in comparison to the psp by accident. I find the placement very unfortunate for the 3ds, it is easy to hit the power button by mistake if you get too excited with a game. Think how it will be when playing Street Fighter on it. My hands are big so id be likely hitting it by accident.

They will have stage presentations for 3DS games at Nintendo World ( January 8-10)
I kinda expect Sakurai to introduce some people working on Smash Bros. 3DS instead of him with Iwata and laughs on stage...

I love the power button on the inside of the DSi.
Makes the edges sharper. No protrusions.

They moved it to the other side it seems on 3DS.
From DS to DSL to DSi to 3DS, that thing just keeps roaming.

I don't think we've heard anything concrete but it seems silly for them not to.

I would imagine they will have it based on the transferability of dsiware but as has been said we literally know pretty much nothing of the infrastructure or capabilities of the OS.

We have to hope the US event really blows the lid off or maybe that Ninendo will do some Press releases etc during the japan event about capabilities

I only pressed the DSi power button instead of the start button once when reviewing Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded. I think my finger went on auto-pilot and couldn't take all that convoluted bullshit anymore. The worst part about Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded is that they just retcon everything or change the 'rules' they had set in the KH universe and even the game itself because it's all in a computer DURRRR DEERRRPP

The 3DS seems to be all about the angles its pictures are taken. With the various handhelds stacked on top of each other you can see the lines are much more even

Everytime I see this picture I always imagine that a really self-absorbed Iwata has that graph icon lead to a graph specifically to show people how their 3DS prints money.

thing looks bizarre. None of the side match up.

At this point it's pretty clear that Nintendo have designed inherent shittiness into the case design of the 3DS so they can revise it in a couple of years. They got the DS lite and especially the DSi and DSi XL so perfect that there's no other explanation as to how they've ended up with such a mish-mash of Ill-fitting casing components and different plastics.

Does seem to be kind of the opposite direction Apple is going in (actually trying to make attractive hardware.)

I'm seriously considering not buying one just because of how ugly it is.
I mean, come on.

Wow, guess I'm going to wait it out until 3DSNotUgly.

I mean, I jumped on the DS Fat, but knowing what I know now about how quickly hardware revisions may come - waiting it out is much easier.

Not to mention the possibility the screens/3Deffect will be better in later revisions too.
Just thought about that.
